• Chapter 1
    ~Zane’s Secret~

“Another day, another tear, another thing to fear.” I said starting to try to write my paper. I sighed softly knowing how morbid it sounded. “It sounds too morbid but it’s deep.” I tried to convince myself in keeping the beginning of my paper. On the top of my paper I almost forgot to put my name on it. I wrote my name in this elegant script trying to make my chicken scratch not look so bad. ‘Nicole Noel Rosel.’ I have always loved my name because it was a unique name.

The next day at school I walked into class not really wanting to be there and well one of the guys who really never talked to anyone and no one knew why, talked to me. Me! I was so excited but I didn’t let it show on my face. He was a cutie and his name was Zane. No one knew his last name; it was like he wasn’t even a normal human. Well it was obvious because of his eyes. Zane’s eyes were so weird but cool, they were purple with red ruby like, gem like dots in his eyes. His hair was always perfect with how he styled it. No one in our school could do anything like he did and it seemed like he didn’t really spend all that much time on his hair like most people did. His hair was black and blonde, it looked amazing on him and it swept over his right eye like the scene do it.

“Hello.” He said; his voice was kind and velvety, music to my ears. “I’m Zane.” He said. “I’m sorry I’ve never actually talked to you.” He apologized.

I was blown away that he even spoke one word to me. “I’m Nicole.” I told him with a smile on my face. “You don’t have to be sorry.” I said and motioned for him to sit down next to me. He sat and smiled softly at me. “You have beautiful eyes.” I told him unable to look away from his eyes. Zane’s eyes had me in an unbreakable trance as I looked helplessly into his beautiful eyes.

“Well thank you Nicole.” He said, once he spoke the trance was broken. “You have beautiful eyes too.” He said looking at my ice blue eyes. “Sit with me at lunch and I’ll tell you something you might find interesting.” He told me and he looked at the paper in front of me. “Am I aloud to read it?” He asked.

“Okay.” I said wondering what he was talking about. “Go ahead and read it.” I told him. It felt as if we were the only two people in the class as he spoke to me.

He started to read my paper out loud. I was so glad he was whispering it. “Another day, another tear, another thing to fear. Again I feel lost in my own life what does it mean? What does it say? I feel alone because no one has the same differences as I do. I’m not like anyone in here and well it’s hard to fit in because of my differences.” He read aloud. “That’s really deep Nicole.” He told me and I blushed.

“Thanks.” I replied with a smile.

“Well you see you have some things wrong because you and I have to same differences. I know about your powers and what you can do.” He told me. “I have the same thing.”

I gasped in awe that he had the same differences as me. I knew of no one in this school that could conjure ice and control it, fire or any of the elements. Ice was my dominant power I could use. And then with my other abilities like seeing the future, manipulating the emotions of people around me, and reading minds no normal person could do that. I then realized what he was onto; he knew exactly what I was and what I wanted to know.

“Don’t worry Nicole, you won’t have anything to worry about at all.” Zane told me and I blushed again. “Your blush is beautiful Nicole Noel.” He said to me making me blush even brighter. I knew I’d have to be careful of my thoughts around him because if he read my mind it’d be too embarrassing and I couldn’t let that happen at all.

“Thank you so much Zane.” I said to him and he put his hand on my shoulder with a soft smile on his face. His smile so perfect and beautiful, I absolutely loved it. After a few seconds of me looking at his smile I realized he had lip piercings. They looked awesome on him, they were the snakebites and well it was so hot on him. The bell rang at it made our little bubble of only us two pop.

We walked together to our next class, geometry. I didn’t pay attention to anything but Zane. He and I were the smartest in our whole graduating class, he was number one in the class and I was number two so we really didn’t have to pay attention in class at all. We never got anything wrong on any test and I normally outsmarted the teachers sometimes and I never really noticed how closely Zane had watched me to confirm I’m like him in so many ways. We grew up going to the same school ever since elementary and I remember the first day I saw him. I was awestruck in how amazingly talented he was.

“Nicole, you know I’ve watched you grow up for years. I was awestruck by your talents and beauty from the first moment I saw you.” He said to me and I couldn’t say the same to him because well I never told anyone about how I felt about him and well he read my mind to hear the same thing in my words about him. I knew it because of how he had smiled at me. “Your talent with music and art is far better than anyone I’ve met.” He said and I blushed bright red.

“Thank you, your talents in acting, dancing, singing, and everything else had made me want to be more like you Zane.” I told him not letting my embarrassment hold me from telling him what I wanted to tell him.

“That’s a very sweet thing to say Nicole.” He said and hugged me. “I know that I don’t know you very well but you’re the first friend I made in this town and I did feel alone. Reading your mind all these years had made me crazy that I was too nervous to speak to you. I always wanted to speak to you and you always wanted to speak to me but well we were both nervous.” He said and I confirmed it with an awestruck nod. “I know so much about you because of your mind. You normally let your mind wander during class so you never paid attention to anything but your drawings.” Zane said as I smiled at the memories.

“And my music.” I added. “I always loved to compose my own stuff and well I did compose something for you last year. I always hummed in the hallway hoping you’d hear it.” I told him.

“I had only heard bits and pieces of it, it was beautiful.” He told me. “Your talent goes unnoticed.” Zane said so sincerely. I loved hearing him speak; it made my heart dance with happiness.

Geometry had flown by today while he and I spoke to each other. The next hour, creative writing had to do with writing our own songs. It was the only class that Zane and I weren’t in together and well I missed him the whole hour. Our teacher Ms. Augustus had told us to write a song about what we were feeling at the moment. I started to write some words down, it was going to be a piano song, and I knew it already.

    It went like this:
One day I woke up and found out
What this life was all about.
I knew I wasn’t the same as everyone
But I knew there was something else to come.

    [Chorus]
I always knew that I was different.
I always want to do things my way.
I never knew what I must do to stay.
I always knew it’d end this way.

I never dreamt this would be my life.
As time went by I learned that I was alone.
    But then I met someone.
He was the best I ever had.

    [Chorus]
I always knew that I was different.
I always want to do things my way.
I never knew what I must do to stay.
I always knew it’d end this way.

Now as time goes by I know.
    I’ll never be alone…

I loved the song I finished. It was so beautiful and well how it played out in my mind I’d be singing and playing piano for Zane.

“How is your song going?” Ms. Augustus asked me.

“It’s doing good.” I told her with an accomplished smile on my face.

A few minutes after that the bell rang and I practically ran to my next class knowing that Zane was already there waiting for me.

    “Hello Nicole.” He said smoothly.

“Hey Zane.” I replied with a wistful smile towards him. He smiled softly at me and I blushed bright red.

“So before I tell you, you must keep this secret.” He said not missing any syllable in each word. I nodded and waited for him to go on. “Well you know how you can use different powers like control ice, well my main element is air, and well your other powers like telekinesis and psychic abilities I also can use them. Our kind is called the immortals or as some might say wizards, but the correct term is immortals. No one refers to us as our kind.” Zane was explaining and I was actually listing intently to someone.

“So we are sorta like the same but not?” I asked him and he nodded with a very sweet, kind smile that I absolutely loved because he was directing it towards me. His smile was so captivating as I looked at him. I blushed bright red looking at him in his amazing perfection.

Zane smiled back and as he smiled the bell rang for lunch. I gathered my stuff but he put his hand up for the universal sign telling me to stop what I was doing.
