As they neared, the shadows became clearer. He caught the glint of resting caiman and turned back. The thoughtling, however, kept its eyes pointed in the same direction.

20: You find an herb known for its curative properties on your way to your safe spot. You feed it to your charge, gaining 3 trust. The herb also helps your charge move faster, and you move 10 units with a sudden burst of speed.

Keeper relented to its judgement, and circled around the caiman. They two were rewarded with a hill, its crest easily defensible.

"You're smart, aren't you?" he crooned, tucking it safely in the hollow of a rock. He chewed on the herbs he'd found, and pressed the paste on the thoughtling despite its cries of disgust. "Wait here now; I'll be back for you."

He kept his voice cheerful, but his eyes darkened as he turned away. The thoughtling's cuts had shown the first signs of infection; he'd have to find medicine quickly.

Task 5

His breath came in gasps and his wounds had reopened by the time he found the healer; though he knew something of medicine himself, he knew he could not gather all the materials he needed on such short notice. She was part of a traveling tribe that passed by the area annually, and he thanked the Motherfather that she was here now.

"Can you do this?" she asked, and it stirred a memory within him, as if her doubt was merely an echo of all the doubts he'd faced before. "I have everything you need, but one, and it can only be found past a barricade of thorns."

He closed his eyes, trying to will away the thrum of his current pains, and bowed his assent. As soon as he had the directions, he was off.

The wall was thick; he could not see the end of it. The barbs caught beneath his skin as he worked his way forward.

There he found the last of the ingredients he needed, crowned by blood-red leaves. He was careful to take just the one, and he returned to the healer with his prize. She took one look at his lacerated face, but said nothing; she merely passed the medicine to his care.

He ran to his charge, but his ankle gave way beneath him and he tripped on the way. It took him a moment to regather the materials.

The thoughtling seemed excited at his return, though it could not meet him: its health had quickly turned for the worse. Keeper scrambled to put the materials together.

Too much blood fell into his first attempt, and he suppressed a curse as he was forced to throw it out. He tried again.

This was turning out better; already he could feel the medicine's effects.

He brought it closer to the thoughtling, but though it was weak, it drew back with suspicion.

He rested the medicine at the edge of cleft. The thoughtling's eyes narrowed, but it deigned to give it a cursory sniff. It seemed satisfied with that, and allowed Keeper to apply it to its wounds.

The thoughtling's eyes drifted shut, and so did his as he finally succumbed to his own injuries. When he next woke up, his pains were gone, as was the thoughtling.

It had all been a dream.
