It was hard to say why Sun found participation the Battle of the Tribes appealing. He certainly didn't approve of all these...non-kimeti traipsing merrily about the swamp. He rather thought Owl Caller had said it best: all the other kin had only brought disaster with them. Why should Westfen, or indeed the rest of Matope, welcome them with open hoof? And yet, he knew that the swamp was best-suited for kimeti. The acha had their heat and their desert, the totoma the icy mountains they were clearly built to stomach, the zikwa cool, dark caves where the glow of their bodies would be easy to distinguish, and the kiokote had plains where trees would not interrupt their sprinting.

In conclusion, he thought Westfen would do well at the events, which were, after all, set in the swamp. And maybe, just maybe, other kin would see that, and realize where they'd need to move.

(It was often remarked, in Westfen, that Westward Bound was an idealist.)

Sun was quite aware that he had a ways to go, but that didn't matter. The environment was just so interesting at him that he didn't really feel sore at all. He'd always wanted to know how the Tidewalkers modified their environment to make it more livable, especially since the beaches were so full of sand. And it was interesting to see the structures they'd set up (or adapted) to house kin who needed a rest.

Whistle continued on, nodding to what few kin he recognized along the way - Tidewalkers, of course, rarely entrusted their children to others to raise, but not everyone working the course was a member of the group. Why would they be? Some of the Tidewalkers were competing. They'd have to recruit others somehow.

He really hoped Peep was doing all right, Whistle thought as he rounded another corner. It'd been lovely of her to volunteer to replace Fierce Love, but it hadn't been entirely necessary. They probably could've gotten...his brother, perhaps, to take Fierce Love's place.

Sun loped over another pass, thinking, well, that'd been easy! But perhaps it was merely because the Tidewalkers had wanted to make it seem that way, at first. He was sure the course was built so that the strain on a competitor's legs would multiply as they went along. Now that'd be an interesting challenge, he thought: contrasting types of terrain, unnoticeable slopes that still made a run just that much more difficult...

It'd be fun to set up something like this in Westfen.

Easy now, he reminded himself as he went over just such a slope. This was exactly what the Tidewalkers intended. He was supposed to grow overconfident, and he wouldn't let himself do that: Westfen had a name to defend, and a prize to obtain.

Whistle could not help but wonder how everyone else was doing. He felt an easy sort of soreness in his calves now, and found that he rather appreciated it: it felt like, well, working out. Of course he realized he'd regret this when it was all over, but for now it seemed like persevering was the best course. The Mothers' Club would show them all!

He felt an itch grow on his shoulder, but ignored it as he moved: there'd be time for itch-scratching later, when this was all over. Besides, the breeze now running over his skin would cool it some.

There was the rare respite now of solid ground beneath West's feet, and he couldn't help but sigh in relief as he felt the smack of his hooves pounding on a terrain that didn't sink ever so slightly as he went along. He kept his pace rather than speeding up, though, because he knew that the only reason it was here was so that he'd be caught off guard when, inevitably...

There it went. There was seemingly no visual difference between the two areas, but it definitely felt different beneath his hooves. If he'd been running when he'd first moved onto this terrain, he'd have dug himself far too deep. He wished he had the clan's salamander with him to pat himself on the back, but figured that was probably too frivolous of an application. Sometimes he wondered if Longclaw despaired that his clan's head builder went off into such flights of fancy. But then again, they'd been friends for so long that it hardly mattered. Anyway, he was reliable where it counted, and no one could say that Sun was not an expert.

Whistle could readily admit he didn't know where he was going, but perhaps that was part of the draw of the ordeal. It'd certainly be an attention-grabbing story for the foals the Mothers' Club would raise, and so he focused on that. How could he frame his run so that it was more...suspenseful?

[omg finally a good roll for him]

Maybe getting rid of the Tidewalkers along the way would help: it'd certainly seem as though Whistle were hardier if it didn't seem like he needed someone's help to find difficult terrain. Or perhaps he could frame it differently: not as a contest, perhaps. No, that make villains of the Tidewalkers unnecessarily, and he didn't want that.

USING A RISK ROLL because he seems lucky rn OUO

Oh, ouch, that looked...like mud. Whistle winced, and paused, but kept on going, slowing slightly so that he wouldn't slip and his legs wouldn't give out beneath him. He'd have to let Peep know to do this, he thought. Maybe the next time he saw her. Or if she was with child again? Knowing her, it'd happen soon; she liked children too much.

Then again, you could certainly say the same for Whistle.

Sun ambled along easily. It didn't seem as though he'd hit any particularly diffcult terrain so far, so that was good. Okay, he amended mentally: he'd hit difficult terrain, but so far he'd known how to deal with it. The course had been designed by Tidewalkers, though, so you never knew how bad it could really get. If anything, it was good that the Tidewalkers were a hardy bunch. He still wasn't sure that they should let acha and kiokote into their fold, but hey - they claimed coastal territories, and those technically were not the purvey of anyone. At any rate, he supposed acha liked...sand? He didn't know.

He ducked around a large outcropping of stone at the nearest kin's direction. Ah, of course: now there was gravel beneath his hooves. He should've expected that! Unfortunately, though, there was no time to rest. Perhaps there'd be more mud, later on, and the mud would help pull the gravel out?

Unlikely, but a buck could hope. This gravel really was a hassle!
