Luna chuckled as the Rockruff licked her hand. The sensation tickled her appendage, and she couldn't help but laugh. She immediately started to wonder where should could find a Rockruff for herself. She imagined a cute little Rockruff sleeping in her lap while she played games. A Rockruff that gave her an excuse to go outside every now and then on walks. Of course, she already had a Pichu to care for, but she had read somewhere that rodent-type Pokemon didn't necessarily need to go outside very much at all. If Pichu could speak, however, she would have told Luna not all Pokemon are alike.
The young girl looked up from the Rockruff to Kukui as he spoke. She nodded politely, "Nice to meet you too, prof. The islands do seem very pretty..." 'but oh god, I really don't want to be here.' Luna finished the sentence in her head. She kept her expression neutral, until the Popplio appeared from her ball. Luna could hardly believe her eyes at how cute the Popplio was. She knew it was a water-type, but it reminded her somewhat of the canid-type Pokemon back home.
As the Rockruff and Popplio played, Pichu couldn't help but join in on the fun. She hopped off of Luna's shoulder and into the fray. Initially, the Popplio gave Pichu a sniff, and Pichu replied in kind. After a couple of seconds, they were as thick as thieves. Luna got to her knees as the professor worked on her Pokedex. She hadn't known she would get one, but thought it would be quite exciting.
Popplio approached Luna as she lowered to the ground, it barked excitedly. "Bwork! Bwork!" Luna's hand moved on it's own as she reached out and began to lovingly rub the Popplio's head. Luna's face contorted into a look of sheer happiness... and worry. "Oh no... now I know I will have to go outside more." Somehow Luna managed to both smile, yet frown with her eyes.
Once the professor was done, Luna pocketed all the items the professor handed her. She had no idea people could be so generous. She gave the professor an easy smile, "Thanks, prof. These will come in handy." Luna picked up the Popplio, feeling pleased by the touch of it's skin on her arm. "Alola, cousin." As the words escaped Luna's lips, she felt cool. Kukui actually seemed like a cool and interesting person.
Luna walked out of the professor's lab toward Route 1 with a wave. Maybe this trip wouldn't be as horrible as she thought.

With his back pressed against the back of the bench, Naomi sat out on the terrace of the boat in the hopes of catching sight of the Alola islands quicker. Of course, this worked better when one's eyes were open, but the trip from Ransei to Alola was a long, tiresome one, that involved several stops at ports and changing boats. The sun shone down on the passenger line brightly, and the cool breeze that wove through the air, while delightful, didn't help to keep the young man awake anymore than the Pinap juice he'd sucked down earlier; though both were equally refreshing. On the verge of unconsciousness, his body rocked forward, once, twice, but before he could topple over and onto the floor--which, actually, might not have been such a bad thing, it did look rather comfortable--Ieyasu, his ever vigilant Eevee, jumped into Naomi's lap, startling him awake, and postponing his meeting with the floor of the deck.
"I-I'm up," he assured, to the convincement of no one. Ieyasu shot him a dubious look, but then pulled himself to his hind-legs to lick Naomi's cheek. Naomi smiled and patted the head of his partner, and with a yawn he sat himself up properly in his seat. Right, right, right. He could do this! They were almost there after all! Naomi leaned his head back to peer just past the railing, and to his surprise spotted, past the expanse of sparkling blue, the far away silhouette of an island. "We're almost there?" Wow... he couldn't believe it, he'd half expected to only see more ocean. "Ieyasu, we're almost there!" Naomi pulled his head back up and turned to the Eevee, the grin blossoming over his face quickly erasing all signs of exhaustion. Gently herding him back onto the seat beside him, Naomi cleared his lap before he pulled from his bag the Alolan guide book he'd picked up while in port. He'd already read it, from cover to cover, twice, but there was no harm in reading it again! He wanted to make sure he hadn't missed anything.
Thirty minutes later, and only halfway through the guide, and the boat had docked, much to Naomi's sheer excitement. Cautioning Ieyasu to keep close, the young man shouldered his bag before he joined the crowd of tourists, just like him, leaving the boat. Rather than follow the majority to Hau'oli City (a city "overflowing with gentle joy", and the largest city on Melemele Island, according to the guide book), Naomi branched away and started down a route with less traffic, oohing and aahing all the while. Eventually, his travels led him to a beaten shack, that had certainly seen better days. Not quite as picturesque as the rest of the island, or at least what he'd glimpsed so far, and certainly a bit out of place -- but definitely not without interest!
Naomi checked his guide, there was nothing in the guide about this lovely little home, so was it a residential? Naomi gingerly stepped onto the porch, wood creaking underneath his feet, and pulled the door back. It was open, and considering how it was just out here, perhaps it was open to the public? Curiosity gaining the best of him, Naomi resigned that he could only hope that was the case as he pulled the door back wide enough for him to slip through, though he allowed Ieyasu to enter first. "Hello?" Naomi called out into the empty room, far more spacious than he would've originally estimated. A blur of movement catching his eye, he moved off to the side to look at the pink pokemon that swim about in a cylinder tank. Naomi brightened as he recognized the fish. "Remember these, Ieyasu?" He turned with a smile. "These are Luvdisc."

"Alola cousin!" Kukui called over the railing before making his way down the stairs, grinning as his visitor seemed enamored by the luvdisc in his fishtank. "Yeah, they're nice until they give you a sweet kiss and take you down for the count!" Kukui chuckled. "Sure are pretty to look at though~" He agreed. "What can I do for you today cousin? Need a helping hand?" Kukui inquired, easy grin ever present on his face as he continued cracking out clever word play puns using the moves he'd studied for so long. He had a dozen of them all lined up in his mind for just about any given scenario, just like pokemon did in a real battle.
Drawing his gaze away from the tank, Naomi brushed at his layers of clothing and straightened himself out, to look a bit more presentable, when a man called out. He blinked, and took in the stranger's choice of attire with wide eyes. Was this the Alolan style? Curious. Not forgetting his manners, Naomi dipped into a short bow, keeping his arms to his sides. "Alola," he parroted back, recalling the island's standard greeting. Though he wasn't exactly sure about this 'cousin' business; he was certain the two of them weren't related.
Did he need something? Naomi considered this as he pulled back from his bow, eyes falling to the man's neck to keep from making eye contact. This man didn't seem all too surprised to find a stranger in his home, so he'd been right about this being a structure for the public. Though what it exactly was, that was beyond him. "What exactly is this place?" he inquired, then looked about curiously once more. Naomi hadn't had much time to properly survey the area, he'd been completely distracted by the Luvdisc, and upon looking around he realized that it was a lot more organized than its exterior might've suggested. "I'm not familiar with these islands."

Kukui was genuinely surprised the boy--girl? He wasn't actually entirely sure–asked what this place was. "Whoa! What a wake up slap. Sorry cousin, I thought you knew! Most visitors do when they come here anyways. I'm professor Kukui, and this is my lab! I can register people as trainers, set them up for the island challenge, pokemon league, and give them their starter pokemon." Kukui explained. "You see, out here in Alola, we have two kinds of challenges, kinda like a double kick! The league challenge would be what you're probably used to, going to the gyms and battling your way up, but island challenges are a bit different. More traditional for us islanders. You'll have to go scope it out for yourself and see what I mean, if you're interested." He suggested, figuring it might be interesting for the newcomer. "What's your name cousin? Didn't mean to put the spotlight on me." Kukui chuckled.
Naomi offered an apologetic smile. Yes, it did make sense that most people had an idea of what this place was, before visiting. He just supposed he was different then, and that was good? He was careful to keep his confusion from showing as Professor Kukui explained what his job entailed, and the challenges of the island. He listened intently, but even then his mind still wandered briefly. This man certainly had a penchant for incorporating pokemon moves into his vernacular; it was impressive.
Tuning back in, he managed to catch mention of a league challenge. Naomi blanked then, despite his best efforts, but through a rapid brain search managed to recall reading about that particular topic while he was still back home. Right! He was informed! He knew exactly what those were, and they did sound interesting; a lot like the challenges he participated in back home, from what he understood. "Shimizu Naomi," he introduced, mind fully focusing on the present.
Kukui made a good point though, if he wanted to know more about these island challenges... he'd have to investigate on his own time. Which meant... registering as a trainer? And getting a starter pokemon? Whatever that meant. "You mentioned you gave out pokemon, Professor?" Naomi could feel another sense of excitement building within him, keeping the exhaustion at bay once again. "What species?"

Kukui smiled and nodded as Naomi gave his name. Quite a mouthful wasn't it? "Nice to meet you Shimizu!" Kukui greeted, not knowing that Naomi had introduced his name the traditional way with the surname leading. Naomi seemed interested in the pokemon he gave away however. "Yeah! Here, let me introduce you." He suggested, moving to a table nearby and releasing the three Alolan starters. "Here we have the grass quill pokemon, rowlet, the fire cat pokemon, litten, and the sea lion pokemon, popplio." Kukui explained, gesturing to each pokemon to indicate which he was referring to, though it was probably pretty obvious. "Are you a new trainer? I'd be happy to give one of them to a good home, if any catch your eye, and if you want I can get you a tour guide with quite the spark, heh." Kukui offered, closing an eye with a mischievous looking grin. Naomi did appear to have a pokemon of his own already, the little eevee that was with him, but having another teammate on hand was never a bad thing, especially when just starting out on a journey.
"The feeling is mutual, Professor." Naomi turned follow Kukui over to his table, only to think better of it and wait until after the man had released three different pokemon. Ieyasu, who'd remained quiet up until this point, took the initiative to approach the three once they were released, like a general in front of new recruits. Neither he nor Naomi had ever encountered these sort of pokemon before, so that meant he had to properly investigate and decide with a discerning gaze which would be worthy of joining them on this adventure. At this point in his life, his human had only been partnered with two pokemon; so it was even more important that the third fit the team.
While Ieyasu was on recruiting duty, Naomi turned his attention back to Kukui with a soft smile. It sounded as if he could only take one pokemon, and while he was certain that such a choice was an important one, and needed a trainer's input, he was confident in Ieyasu's ability. "I am a new trainer, yes," he responded finally to the professor. Like brand new, brand I-just-decided-thirty-seconds-ago-that-I-wanted-this new. Though confused at the professor's phrasing--quite the spark? What did he mean by that?--he jumped at the idea of having a tour guide with him; it'd certainly make his travels easier. "Ah, yes. That'd be wonderful, thank you."
Ieyasu sniffed all three pokemon, and kept a blank face as the Popplio barked in response, the Rowlett eyed him carefully, and the Litten sniffed back before laying itself down, this one, apparently, was tired. Keeping his opinion to himself, for now, he walked away, seemingly to give his report to Naomi, only to spin around and charge at the trio. A startled hoot and a ruffling of feathers as it took flight, was all that came from the Rowlett, while the Popplio puffed itself up, ready to attack. Only the Litten, who simply looked up at the charging Eevee from its curled position on the ground, stayed where it was. Ieyasu slowed to a stop, his charge falling to a simple trot, before shaking his head at all three, not quite pleased with any of the reactions he'd gotten. Litten, giving a yawn, uncurled itself and stood back to its haunches before it leaned over and batted him on the nose with a paw. Ieyasu sneezed.
From nearby, Naomi gave a laugh. "I believe this one called your bluff," he mused, then turned to the Professor. "As for my starter, I'll take the Litten, Professor. Is that alright with you, Ieyasu?" The Eevee, rubbing at his nose with one paw, nodded once before bounding back over to Naomi. Litten, getting the memo, stretched itself out before following after Ieyasu and settling itself down at the feet of Naomi, its new trainer.

Kukui smiled as Naomi said he was a new trainer and agreed to his tour guide. "Great!" After rubbing his hands together, he gave a sharp whistle towards the inside of the house. "Zrt! Coming!" Soon the rotom dex came flying into the room, glancing between Naomi and Kukui. "Here you are Shimizu, this little guy can help you find your way around." He offered. "Oh! Certainly. Please stand still master Shizumi." The rotom chimed, scanning the boy for a moment and then giving a pleasant chime that said the process was complete. "This pokedex is fitted for a rotom to operate within, it includes a map, camera, and of course all the features of a national pokedex. With rotom inside, it can help you navigate more easily and give information about the areas you're in." Kukui explained, glancing over as Naomi's eevee tested the pokemon, leaving Naomi to the conclusion that the litten was the one he wanted. "Alright! Here's their pokeball. Let me get you some supplies for the road too!" Kukui suggested, quickly coming back with some potions and pokeballs. "Alright cousin, you're all set! Have a good one~" Kukui nodded.
With eyes wide, Naomi took in the strange sentient electronic. Was this is tour guide? This was the last thing he'd expected, but it was appreciated. He stood still as instructed by the little robot, and kept his statuesque position long after the scan had been complete. "There are certainly a lot of features," he remarked, but the explanation helped him get a better understanding of the importance and usefulness of the device. "Thank you, and I look forward to working with you, Rotom." He didn't know much about that pokemon either, but he was excited nonetheless. Naomi took Litten's pokeball and after tossing it a bit, he put it aside to make room for the other items he was given, they were quite a few.
That seemed to be everything, didn't it? If the Rotom Pokedex had a map, then he could simply use it to navigate himself around the island. Naomi bent down to pet Litten's head, hoping a bit of affection would help the cat grow a bit more accustom to him, before he bowed once more to Kukui. "Thank you, Professor. You've been a great help," he addressed the man, head still bent. Making way for the door, Naomi stopped just at the door before waving to the Professor with a smile. "Jā mata ne!"

𝐌𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐞𝐤𝐮𝐦𝐮 ▇▇ ▇▇ ▇▇ ▇▇ ▇▇ ▇▇ ▇▇ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Today was the big day! Mokihana awoke in her room, adorned with the many plushes of stuffed pokemon she had amassed over the many years. After fumbling around for a bit, she managed to retrieve her red glasses from their case and slide them over her ears. Now able to see a bit better, the youth climbed out of bed and quickly scurried into the bathroom nearby. She made sure to keep the noise down, not wanting to wake up her mother from her slumber. She had been working nights mainly, and tended to sleep during the mornings and early afternoons. Mokihana had gotten used to this and normally kept the apartment looking spotless and quiet when she was passed out on the couch again. The bathroom light was turned on and the door closed behind her. The child's hands quietly felt around for her things and began to brush her teeth, floss, get dressed and ready to go. It took a few minutes or so until she stepped out from the bathroom and then moved towards the kitchen. The snore of her mother on the couch and the news on the television greeted her as she slowly tiptoed out of the apartment.
After closing the door behind her, Mokihana would hurry down the stairs with one hand on the railing. Streaks of a red colors passed her vision as she could tell some parts had received a fresh coat of paint. They just didn't match the other lines of varying sizes. That and her had felt wet. Her feet touched the ground and led her down the Hau'oli City sidewalk. Being on her own like this was quite hard due to her disability, though once she met up with a friend not so far from here, the journey would become much more easier. Sure she almost wandered into a wall a couple of times, but that was besides the point! She made her way across town before coming along the fifth fence after the first crosswalk near her home. It was the playground that she had agreed to meet Tahvo at. She entered the park and stood by until a familiar voice called out for her near the benches. "Hana! There you are! We've been waiting forever!" Tahvo ran over to her as she spun around and caught sight of a few streaks of color. His black streaks of hair would hover over her, being a year or two older. His father laughed for a moment or so before patting his son's head. "Alola, Mokihana. Let's not delay any longer. You've got a journey to begin!" The trio then soon departed for the professor's lab.
The journey took around an hour or two, but here they were. Excited to get her very first pokemon, Mokihana spun on her head and smiled at the two. "Thank you both so much! I would have never made it here without you two!" She hurried inside of the lab without a second thought and looked around. This place had quite the atmosphere. Colors in shapes she had never seen before. "Alola, Professor! I've come to get my pokemon." She announced, searching around for the man.

The first one to greet any newcomers in Professor Kukui's lab was, of course, his Rockruff, who barked and ran over to the new trainers, tail wagging. The rock pup, as usual, was looking for some pats and sniffing the new smells. The professor himself soon followed, running up the stairs to see who was calling. "Alola, cousin!" he smiled, greeting the young girl that had arrived. Rockruff was sniffing around her feet, looking up at her expectantly. "So, have any idea which starter you'd like? I can show them to you, if you still aren't sure." Kukui told the girl, getting right to business. He had one of each of the starters' balls in the pocket of his jacket this time, so he was well prepared this time.
The thing Heidi loved so much about Alola was how everywhere she went there was an echo of home. The salty sea breeze followed her wherever she went, and the ocean out on the horizon could be spotted from nearly every route she's taken. Hau'oli City, Melemele Islands great port city, was much larger than Canalave in every way imaginable, but the locals' warm friendly faces were comforting in a foreign land. While she's only been here for about a day or so, Heidi was already starting to ease up to the unfamiliarity of it all.
Goldie, her pet Meowth and newly appointed starter Pokemon, didn't share the same sentiments towards Alola like her trainer did. The island sun was too hot, and the Pokemon here smelled different. Goldie was hyper-vigilant, constantly on guard for any potential and unseen threats. Yesterday evening, Goldie had already found herself in some literal cat fights with a few Alolan Meowths that lurked in the tall grass around the city. While she was able to stand her ground, she still had to be taken to the Pokemon Center afterwards. The poor dear ... Goldie wasn't too keen on battling. Those poorly aimed swipes of hers could barely pass as an attack.
Heidi hoped that this journey would do wonders for the both of them. Today was the day she officially set out, and upon the recommendation of the Nurse Joy in one of Hau'oli's Pokemon Centers, Heidi was traveling to the southern coastal region of Route 1 to seek the audience of Professor Kukui. He'd have some fitting advice and supplies for starting trainers like herself. Eager to meet the man, Heidi quickly made her way to the Melemele Sea, hopping down the small ledges of Route 1 to make her trip quicker. With one hand, she gripped tightly to her messenger style bag, and with the other, she held Goldie close to her chest. Constantly being outside bombarded the once house cat with too many new sights and scents. It'd something they'd both have to work on.
Once she arrived at the lab, Heidi bashfully smirked, her brows knitting together in concern. Surely the lab must've seen better days ... However, despite the rough appearance of the lab, Heidi continued inside. "Hello, er ... Alola?" That was how Alolans greeted each other, correct? "Professor Kukui, I'm here to start my adventure. I already brought a starter Pokemon with me from home." Heidi lifted Goldie up so the Professor could see the Meowth before returning her to the safety of her bosom.
Nothing beat a full day’s worth of in-field training! Busting out a few moves with a few of the lab’s residents, and of course testing his own resistance to said moves, it’d certainly been a progressive day! Now busily scribbling out his findings into his notes, the good Professor stopped mid-page when the creaky door to the lab was opened and a cheerful, albeit unfamiliar, voice called out. ”Alola!” Kukui spun around, greeting his visitor with the exuberance a local of the region could muster. He tipped his hat back, and grinned as he looked at the young brunette before him, Meowth in arms, ”sure thing, cousin! Give me just a second to Rollout your items!” With a chuckle he moved to the back of the shack-lab to grab the necessary supplies, as well as a Pokedex, while in the meantime his Rockruff clicked its way across the wooden floor to greet both human and feline. Once he’d gathered everything, Kukui re-approached Heidi, and handed her her items, ”Here you are! A few potions, pokeballs and, of course, your Pokedex! It’s essential to all trainers, new and old.” The man crossed his arms over his chest, proud of the work he’d done (even if it was nothing more than sparing a few items). ”Need anything else? I’d be happy to answer questions you have, to help you start your journey with a Calm Mind.”
TThe professor wasn't wearing a shirt, something that initially had caught Heidi aback. It was probably the custom for the region, to be okay with wearing beach attire even in a place that Heidi would've considered a professional setting. However, the professor's enthusiasm and willingness to help her start her journey was well welcomed. As the man bounced to the rear portion of the lab to fetch her supplies, Heidi took the time to explore the lab. The huge tank of Luvdisc caught her attention first, and she and Goldie spent a fair amount of watching the fish swim among the reefs. Luvdisc were prolific here in Alola. The warm waters and the abundance of Corsola reefs fostered their population growth, and from what Heidi had read in her courses, in the mating season, certain patches of the ocean would colored pink by the fish Pokemon.
Professor Kukui returned shortly with the items. Heidi was honestly relieved to not have to be cooped in the lab much longer. Goldie stirred in her arms, both out of fear from the Rockruff that barked at Heidi's ankles and out of excitement of having fish -- a potential meal -- in front of her, just between a pane of glass. The items Kukui had for her were a supply of pokeballs and potions. There was a standard issue Alolan Pokedex as well, for which Heidi was grateful for. "Thank you Professor," she chirped. "I appreciate the supplies, but I think I'll head out now. I don't want to keep you from your work." She gave him a one handed Alola have good-bye and crouched down to attempt to pet his Rockruff. However, as Heidi got close to the dog, Goldie swiped out, and she retreated quickly. "Thank you so much again, Professor!"
