Tanith and her sister (Hiss/Shesha) were abandoned by their mother Jei when they were still in their boxes. Jei (mistakenly) believes that her father killed and ate her mother and siblings (she saw him with blood on his maw after a hunt). Jei believed that Tanith and Shesha were monsters? not knowing the snakey bits of their anatomy were in fact throwbacks to her mate Tori's family.

Tanith and Shesha wandered the wilderness alone, having no names they spoke to each other as snakes spoke and upon meeting Rune (SwordOfTheDarkOnes naga male) they are taught to speak the common ulaya tongue and given names.
