Nikolai's expression softened. So he tried to save someone. He could understand that, the hopeless feeling given when the one you want to protect dies in front of you. Nikolai had to close his eyes and take a few deep breaths to keep the flashbacks from overwhelming him.
Opening his eyes, he decided to try and change the conversation by saying, "So what all have you done as a priest, Father Anthony?"

"Not much," he admitted. "I've only been a priest a few weeks. What about you, Father Nikolai?"

Finding this as his opportunity to shine, Nikolai smiled. "Numerous charities, dear-Uh, yeah." he said proudly and took another drink of his beer. "But my best work is teaching people how to love again. It's truly heartwarming to see them so happy again." he sighed contently and placed his hands over his heart.

the priest felt his eyebrow raise. "Oh? And how do you do that?" he asked.

"Just spending time with them." he answered. He wasn't an idiot, he knew that priests, anything holy really, couldn't have sex. Poor people... But that's what made this plan even more delicious. "I got to know them and helped them overcome obstacles in life. I was almost like... like a...." He tilted his head and tried to think of the right word.

"A sponsor! That's perfect." Nikolai said, reflecting the smile. At least until he tasted the lasagna. "Oh my." he murmured and leaned back in his seat, staring at the food with wide eyes. "Did you make this?" he asked and looked up at Anthony. "It's absolutely wonderful!"

The man blushed lightly, moving his around the plate with a fork. "It's not the best. You don't need to make a big deal out of it. It's practically the only thing I know how to make."

"My village was generous, bless them, but they couldn't cook worth a damn." he laughed lightly, enjoying how flustered Anthony was becoming. He decided to risk it and scoot closer to him a little.

"It's alright, I spend most of my hours either praying, preparing, having Mass, or working out, so I might not have time anyway," managed Anthony, looking away and clenching his jeans with his fists.
