. HALLOWEEN 2015 - DEATH COMES TO MONEYBAGS .

You stare at the paper in front of you. Outside, the storm rages, but the room is silent. Nobody has words- there are no words for this. There’s been a murder- and the murderer is one of you. The house creaks ominously; a clock ticks in the distance. Someone coughs, and the noise makes you jump; the crawling tension tickles the back of your neck. One of you is a murderer… and you have to find out who.

As you search, investigate, and unravel the mystery of who killed Old Moneybags, be alert. Be aware. Be careful- it's not just the guests you have to worry about...

This house has secrets...

. RULES .

The rules are as follows:
1. You will have three days to sign up for this game. You must sign up; you will not be allowed to jump into the game without a character role, so if you miss the deadline, you’re out! You have until 11:59 PM CST on the 2nd of November to enter! Rounds are 24 hours!
2. This game is going to run a little differently from other CYOAs. You will be assigned an archetype- a role you will play in the RP portion of the game. This game is a murder mystery and in the classic murder mysteries, there’s all kinds of stock characters. Archetypes are chosen at random to make things fair- you can’t all be the ingénue! Please be aware of the spheres of character interactions: You control your phony, who is playing a role that is not necessarily like themselves. That being said…
3. You must roleplay in your post! This is an RP game as much as it is a CYOA. RP is extremely important! You will be judged on it!
4. This game is open to anybody, regardless of their phony ownership status. Those without Phonies can play themselves or an owned Gaia B/C pet that is not MLP-based. It’s preferable for owners to play phonies, since a phony is the host of this game - but if you want to play a human or another Gaia B/C pet, that’s ok too. However, Gray or Blacklist status does preclude you from participation.
5. This is a round elimination game, meaning that if you do not post, you will be out! Your character will be written out of the game. There are other ways to get eliminated, too- sometimes you might make the wrong choice… but not posting will get you eliminated!
6. Sometimes you will receive information via private message. It is up to you whether or not you share this information and who you share it with. Keep in mind, however, that you can only communicate with characters in the same room as you.
7. Rounds will last twenty-four hours. The game will start at the stroke of midnight CST on the 3rd of November, right after signups are complete.

Please be aware that this game is rated PG-13 for violence; nothing bad will actually happen to your Phony, but your character may have something tragic occur.

Once you’ve signed up, you will be quoted at the top of each round, provided you are still in play. You have THREE OBJECTIVES in this game. Objective one is to survive all thirteen rounds. Objective two is to find the murderer and to determine the murder weapon. All the clues you need to figure these things out are in the game; however, you may not find all of them if you don’t look everywhere. At the end of the thirteenth round, you must PM SCARAMOUCHE FANDANGO your guess. This must be done through PM. If nobody figures it out, the murderer will win the game. Objective three is to play your role well. Roleplay is extremely important in this CYOA- it can unlock opportunities you might not receive otherwise.

. CAST OF CHARACTERS .

NPCs
• The Butler, Rank and File: Rank and File has served Moneybags for years; as the butler he perhaps knew Moneybags better than anybody. A dry, sarcastic hand, he has strong opinions about everyone in the room- but blessedly little to say.
• The Housekeeper, Fuchsia Fussbudget: Sister to Rank and File, she has served the family for just as long as her brother. She practically raised both of Moneybags’s children after the death of their mother, and while she doesn’t seem to be fond of anybody, she seems like she would go to great lengths to protect the family.
• The Sommelier, Wine About It: It was no secret that Wine About It absolutely hated her employer. Old Moneybags had an impressive wine collection, but he was an absolute miser about it, and Wine About It spent many evenings crying quietly in frustration over her ill treatment.
• The Cook, Chop Chop: An irritable earth pony with a quick temper, Chop Chop spent most of her employment threatening to quit. Moneybags would always complain about her food, but he never fired her. Nobody quite knows why.
• The Lawyer, Habeus Corpses: A talented estate lawyer (with a name like that, she has to be, Habeus is privy to many of Moneybags’s secrets, both financial and personal. She has been working with him since the death of his first wife and has maintained his will. It is she who summoned you to the house tonight, as she will be unsealing and reading the will to the inheritors.
Important note: NONE of the NPCs are the murderer! It is one of the guests!

Family
• The Ex-Wife, Lucky Clover: Wife Number Three, Lucky Clover is the youngest daughter of a casino magnate. Charming and bubbly, she’s not what you’d call particularly ruthless- although she is devastatingly beautiful. Clover was only married to Moneybags for six months before their divorce; a carefully-worded prenup means she left with little more than what she came into the marriage with. Her large family means that her parental inheritance wasn’t much; could there be more to her than her ditzy exterior? Could she be hiding a ruthless streak? (Played by TART)
• The Other Ex-Wife, Bitter Pill: Wife Number Two, Bitter Pill is a surgeon who fell in love with Moneybags during the tragic decline of his first wife. He fell in… something and they were quickly wed- but the tragedy of Bitter Pill is that she was a rebound relationship and he broke things off a couple years later. Bitter Pill is extremely bitter about this (she holds grudges) and feels as though she’s been used and abused, then discarded like an old glove. Which is, of course, entirely true. While she’s lived comfortably since, she hasn’t been happy. (Played by Hex Maniac)
• The Other Other Ex Wife: Wife Number Four, Satin is a pampered, plush society woman who knew exactly what she was getting into with Moneybags. She had no visions of true love going into the marriage; it was really more of a business move for both of them. She is extremely smart and savvy to the way of the world- they needed partners, both of them, and so they were married- despite the fact that they didn't actually like each other all that much. Their marriage (the first for neither of them) lasted for a good few years and was riddled with affairs on both parts. She isn't particularly fond of either of the other two ex-wives but is on very good terms with all of the lawyers in the room. Even somehow Torts Illustrated. (Played by Marvel)
• The Wayward Daughter, Penny Earned: Penny was always her father’s favorite child. A free-spirited spitfire, Penny left her private university to volunteer with a program establishing sustainable, organic, biofriendly farming techniques in developing countries. After her mother’s death, she gave most of her trust fund to charity and has only recently come back into her father’s orbit. She is everything her older brother is not; she is funny, flirtatious, and decidedly daring. She does have a bit of a temper and is passionate about her beliefs, which does sometimes lead to conflict… (Played by Penny Dreadful)
• The Dutiful Son, Pennybags: Pennybags has put up with a lot from his father. His childhood wasn’t easy; his father was largely absent, and his mother much the same. Their marriage was troubled, and Pennybags was the responsible child. Never takings risks, never straying from the path set out for him, marrying well- and hopefully standing to inherit his father’s business and fortune. But when his sister returned and his father welcomed her home with open hooves, Pennybags felt his resentment growing. She had been gone and he had done everything- and when his father mentioned redrafting the will, he panicked. What if everything went to her? It would be just like the old man! But would he kill him to prevent this? (Played by Love's Lemma)
• His Scheming Wife, Clementine: Ambitious, ruthless, and drop dead gorgeous, Clementine found a weak-willed husband well above her social class at college, sank her fangs into him, and has never let go. She has more in common with Moneybags than his son ever did, and has been extremely pushy about her son’s role in the family’s business. (Played by Many More)
• Their Dutiful Child, Moneypenny: Moneypenny, a nervous child with big, somber eyes, is Pennybags made over. The poor kid shoulders more responsibility than a child should have and is constantly looked over by Clementine in favor of Cutie Honey. Quiet and shy, Moneypenny doesn’t really open up to anybody. Could the poor kid finally have snapped? Or was it just obvious that Grandpa needed to be gone for Daddy to be happy? (Played by La Llorona)
• Their Little Brat, Cutie Honey: Just the worst. An adorable filly with a mane of golden blonde curls, Cutie Honey has starred in no less than seven local commercials (the most recent one being for the zoo) and had a small role in a made-for-tv movie- a movie that she knows her grandfather never watched. Words can not sum up how terrible this child is. Egged on by her mother, who believes her daughter is the next Shirley Temple, Cutie Honey only cares about Cutie Honey. Of all the characters in this motley cast, she is the most ambitious and potentially the most dangerous… but would she go so far as to kill? (Played by Haute Couture)
• The Long Lost Cousin, Saddlebags: A rancher from out near Dodge Junction, Saddlebags doesn't have much in common with Moneybags- and never has. The two knew each other as children brought to family functions, but that was it. A countrified sweetie with a gentle, kind heart, Saddlebags is a trusting soul who would never hurt a fly. It's odd that they're in town, though... what have they been doing in this part of the world? Is it just coincidence that they were on hand around the time of Moneybags's death? (Played by Twilight)
Friends
• The Professor, Book Smart: Dean of Students of Moneybags’s alma mater, they has recently been trying to solicit a gift for the university from Moneybags in the form of sponsorship of a new dorm or academic building. Moneybags, however, was never known to be charitable and had little in the way of school spirit; Book Smart only recently realized that Moneybags had been leading them on. (played by Obi)
• The Femme Fatale, Cloak and Dagger: A young woman who has smarmed her way into Moneybags’ social circle. Though younger than his own children, she has been seen on his hoof at a number of fancy events wearing diamonds far beyond her pay grade. Rumor had it that she was aiming to become Wife Number Five. (Played by Sea Whip)
• The Grand Dame, Diamante: An old friend of Moneybags. It was rumored that the two had been lovers, but due to a family quarrel could never be together. For quite a while it was a black mark on Diamante’s reputation, resulting in scandal and divorce from her first husband. Perhaps she had never truly forgiven Moneybags… Perhaps she was still holding a grudge from all those years ago. (Played by Lavender Lemon)
• The big game hunter, Quarter Mane: An old acquaintance of Moneybags, supposedly a friend. They’d gone to school together and had known each other for most of their lives, but had never really liked each other. Quarter Mane had been something of a scandalous figure in his youth, eschewing his family’s business connections for a life of adventure, but he had the last laugh when he’d made a mint on safari tours. He has recently lost a chunk of that fortune, however, after taking bad advice on an investment from Moneybags. (Played by Paws Button)
• The Captain of Industry, Steelyard Rumble: Decidedly new money, Steelyard comes from a family of hard workers and strong backs. Climbing their way through the social ranks, Steelyard has never fit into the upper echelons of the elite, and Moneybags’s view of the noveau riche was well known. Recently, Steelyard lost a nomination to the Auxiliary Board of the Metropolitan Opera- and it was no secret who the loudest voice against them was. (Played by Burro)
• The Colonel, Whizbang: A weak-spined, rather timid paper pusher, Whizbang has never seen combat and is a talented desk jockey. He comes from a long line of war hawks but has never lived up to his father or grandmother’s standards; he’s something of a coward and always has been- including during his college days, where he roomed with Moneybags. The two were never friends; far from it, they were bitter rivals, with Moneybags largely outshining his pablum roomie. The two have stayed awkwardly in touch their entire adult lives; Whizbang stood at weddings one and three, and Moneybags was at the party when Whizbang got his last promotion. But Colonel Whizbang was always jealous of his half-friend, and made no attempt to hide his bitterness. (Played by Spear Mint)
• The Ingénue, Honey Belle: An intern at the legal firm of Book ‘Em, Hook ‘Em, and Crook ‘Em, Honey Belle has been hounding Moneybags due to an impending income tax investigation and has been digging into his legal background. She has recently become aware of a major scandal involving Moneybags and several holding companies and has been seen snooping around the mansion to investigate. Could her investigations have gone wrong? Did something happen? (Played by Zen)
• The Judge, Judge Fudge: Judge Fudge is a corpulent, jolly-seeming old judge whose smiling face hides a scheming nature and a quick mind. Judge Fudge’s pockets are lined with bribes of all sorts; to the judge, the criminal justice system should be a free enterprise like any other. The judge and Moneybags had a falling out a few years ago; since then, they have tread cautiously around one another. Now Moneybags is dead… how are the judge’s pockets? (Played by TACO)
• The Right Reverend, Bright Blessings: From his gleaming smile to his polished hooves, Bright Blessings is one of the seediest snake-oil spiritualists anyone’s ever met. A clever salesman, Bright Blessings doesn’t really believe in anything other than the almighty dollar. He preaches a sort of prosperity gospel; trust in the heavens and you’ll get rich, that sort of thing. What he’s doing here is something of a mystery; Moneybags was never very religious and certainly would have seen right through Bright Blessings’ act… however, as an investor, buying stock in the preacher’s enterprises might have been a bit of a divine inspiration. Rumors of insider trading hover over these two like a holy ghost. (Played by Blind Love)
• The business partner, Checked Cheque: Moneybags’ long time partner and ostensibly best friend. The two lived very similar lives- big houses, big business, small families. They were partners in many ventures and startups and invested very similarly. The difference, of course, is that Checked Cheque is alive, while Moneybags is dead. While he claims to have been visiting friends in his hometown of Prague, the convenience of his timing is suspicious. (Played by Cremebunny)
• The Corporate Lawyer, Objection!: As a corporate lawyer, Objection! has a strong love-hate relationship with everyone in this room. Their bread and butter has been protecting Moneybags and his holdings from lawsuits, and they are deeply concerned that somebody with a less rigorous business acumen will inherit. The logical thing to do would be to leave everything to Checked Cheque and a couple of other board members, but no, he had to get his family involved. Objection! has a serious objection to the potential of one of the children getting the company- or worse, the younger daughter who reeks of patchouli and socialist tendencies. They are outright dismissive of any of the non-corporate interests in the room. It's not that they're conceited, mind- it's that they are legitimately concerned for a business regimen that has taken decades and millions to properly build up. Especially with the recent troubles, things have been looking up for Objection!- with Moneybags' death, things have been thrown into chaos. There's been a lot of work and it has paid well, but the kind of work that would happen if somebody unworthy was to inherit... Objection! doesn't want to think about that. (Played by Banana Creme)
• The Right Hand Man, See You Later, Delegator: Every good business mogul needs a lackey- somebody to stand there and say "Yes sir," and "Let me get that, sir," and "I'll make sure it's done, sir." Del has been this for Moneybags for many years now, and they are very good at their job- which is basically getting other people to do work that Moneybags doesn't want to do. The two were extremely close, and Del, a temperamental hothead who can be explosive at times, could be almost jealously possessive of their employer. (Played by Caramelldansen)
• The Don: There have been many famous Dons throughout history- Don Corleone, Don Falcone, Don Atello- but all of them are small potatoes compared to the ferocity and intensity of Don Calamari. Don Calimari is said to have a hoof dipped in half the businesses in town if not more, and his presence here tonight surprises absolutely nobody. He is quite friendly in an avuncular way to pretty much everybody, inquiring after their health and their mothers; while he has a temper, he’s good at keeping it under control. At least in public. He might, believe it or not, actually be here on a social call and not just to protect his business end; the Don and Moneybags moved in similar social circles and actually seemed to like each other. (Played by Diamond)

Outsiders
• The Private Detective, Gunky Gumshoe: Cagy about who hired them, Gunky Gumshoe had been tailing Moneybags for weeks before his death. Gunky Gumshoe is a police academy washout who turned to the private sector for an avenue for their deep belief in what’s right and what’s wrong. Moneybags’ callous lifestyle has been infuriating to photograph; a job is a job, but Gunky Gumshoe’s almost at their breaking point… (Played by Treasure Hunter)
• The Thief, Sticky Fingers (no relation): Sticky Fingers wasn’t invited, but they’re not about to let the rest of the guests know. A hot tip from an anonymous member of the house staff (lookin’ at you, Fuchsia and File…) brought them to the mansion tonight. It’s not their first time here; they actually first came in for the Christmas party, posing as a caterer. This has the potential to be the heist of the century, and they’ve spend a lot of time casing the joint. Could they possibly have broken in before and been caught by the owner? The murder could have been an accident… couldn’t it have been? At any rate, it would certainly be easy to blame the outsides, if anybody notices who they are…
Important character note: Sticky Fingers is relentlessly bitter towards their own parents, your parents, his parents, her parents, and the entire notion of parenthood because what kind of person names their hooved child after fingers? (Played by Tough Talker)
• The Other Lawyer, Torts Illustrated: Lucky Clover’s lawyer, a young, passionate legal eagle who fell into divorce law and hates every minute of it. Is part of a large firm and plans to move into the public sector doing prosecution within the next five years. Torts is here tonight at the behest of their employer and has been dealing with Moneybags since the divorce. The case was dragging on and on; while the divorce came through quickly, the prenup actually may have made things worse in this case. Moneybags’ death was extremely convenient for them; it effectively finished the case for them, leaving them free to take other clients and work towards their goal. (Played by Fantasia)
• The Lost Motorist: Brass Tacks wasn't expecting things to go like this. Tonight was supposed to be a night of celebration! He and his fianceé were returning from a friend's wedding, after which they had gotten engaged themselves. They had planned to make a detour to meet up with some friends, but then the storm started. The car broke down not too far from the Moneybags place, and so the two of them braved the rain to seek shelter, only to find that the house's owner is a murder victim and his will is being read. Tonight has been awkward, to say the least- especially because this might mean that both Brass Tacks and his fianceé are out of a job, as both of them worked for one Moneybags' companies. (Played by Barley Pop)
• The Lost Motorist’s Fiancée: Edelweiss is a timid, sweet mare who just wanted to show her friends her diamond ring and her charming, charming fiancé. She loves Brass Tacks more than you could imagine; their relationship is quite sweet and touching. She has eyes only for him, and she certainly never slept with her company's CEO in the backroom when they were both completely hammered at a Christmas party ten years ago, no sir. Why, hearing something like that might shatter Brass Tacks' image of her! It might ruin their wedding and their perfect relationship! Naturally she was a little concerned to stop by his house, but when she found out he was dead... she certainly breathed a little easier. Was it an honest sigh of relief, or was it part of a much bigger act?
(Played by Shrill X)
• The Reporter, Printing Press: Press is a young investigative journalist, hoping to make it big with a series of exclusive interviews with Moneybags. Their original plan was to talk about his life and business developments, but after uncovering a slew of ethical quagmires, the report is looking more and more like an indictment of a terrible person. A week ago, Moneybags found out what the reporter was really getting at and threw them out- and then soon after, he had died. Despite the reporter being a relative stranger, they've seen more of Moneybags recently than most and are aware that he had been acting quite erratic before his death, going on about secrets and lies. When summoned by the old man's lawyer, Printing Press was quite nervous- they feared it was a vicious libel suit in the making. They are as surprised as anybody could be to find out that it was a will reading. (Played by Cat)
• The Opera Singer, Sea Major: A famous soprano with the Metropolitan Opera, Sea Major knew Moneybags from his role in the boardroom and from socializing at cast parties and after-show soirees. He was extremely fond of the charming young mare, and the rumor was that he'd wanted to get to know her in private life- which in this case only meant one thing. She hadn't been interested and had been avoiding him for months- even though he'd not yet made any advances, she knew that scandal could ruin a career and wanted to n** that in the bud. Sea Major is very keen to society's games and rules and is eager to come out on top. In the operas she loves so much, backstabbing is part of nearly every plot; while music is her passion, maintaining her position is a very close second. If Moneybags was getting to be a problem, how far would she go to eliminate that problem? (Played by Holly Mistletide)
• "The Long Lost Cousin," Horsefeathers: Horsefeathers claims to be another long-lost cousin and has been traveling with Saddlebags, who has been extremely happy to meet another member of their family. However, Horsefeathers isn't a family member at all, but rather a con artist playing the long con. The original attempt was to try to sidle some of Saddlebags's family's land out from under them and then sell it off to a developer, but this Moneybags situation has cast a whole new light on things. Ever since Horsefeathers first made the connection between the two a few months ago, they have been trying harder than ever to get a slice of that pie. They are sneaky and underhanded and very very good at seeming innocent and friendly- they've been in the con game for a long time and have yet to be caught. (Played by Honeysuckle)
• The Bookie, Vigorish: Moneybags was a man of many vices, and one of these vices had four hooves and wore saddles. Yes, Moneybags loved to bet on horse racing. He was in deep to a bookmaking group, and that's why Vig is here. See, Vigorish and company had a very... interesting idea about who Moneybags really was. They had no idea how wealthy he actually was- they just thought he was another gambling addict throwing his pension away. He never gave them a name, after all. So when his death made the papers, they were shocked to see who this customer really was. If he was so rich, why was he so in the hole? They were mulling over what to do about the situation, as the staff were quite confused about the whole thing. How had they lived in town this long without the boss knowing who Moneybags really was? The will reading could have been a pretense; the ignorance of the financials feigned to hold out for more. It was somewhat settled when Vigorish got a call from the dead debtor's lawyer, asking him to come to the will reading. Vig is extremely out of place around the posh and polished, and even more out of place around the lawyers- not everything he does is, how you say... legal. (Played by Fire Flight)

. SOME NOTES ABOUT PLAYING .

This game runs a bit differently from most other CYOAs due to its roleplay component. You will have choice options of course, and you will follow standard procedure of indicating letter choice- that hasn’t changed. However, roleplay does come into this! When you make a choice, you will get a description. Let’s walk through this with a description of a room not in play, the Dog Room.

“The Dog Room is filled with pictures of dogs. Dogs of all shapes and sizes. Big dogs, little dogs, fluffy dogs, bald dogs. There are three leather couches in the room, scratched to bits, as well as a desk with a wooden chair- all chewed up, of course. There are five actual dogs in the room.”

Now, if my roleplay response looked like this: “Habeus Corpses searches the dog room,” the response will be something like “Habeus Corpses finds five dogs. They are very fluffy- all mutts, but all quite sweet. They snuffle at her and seemingly want to play fetch.”

But if my post looked something like this: “Annoyed with all the dogs- he never did wash them- Habeus Corpses ignored their pleading eyes and piteous whines to search the desk. There had to be something in one of the drawers,” the response would be something like this: “As she rifled through the drawers of the desk, something caught at the back. Using a tendril of magic, she carefully lifted away a key taped to the top of the drawer. It looked like it went to a safety deposit box, mailbox, or other small, secure location- but it didn’t look like that was in this room.”

The point here is to use your intuition and your character to investigate things. The bare minimum gets minimal rewards! Habeus Corpses wouldn’t have gotten that key otherwise.

The same is true of NPC discussions. NPCs can answer many questions, but they won’t answer if they aren’t asked! (And keep in mind- what the butler knows, the cook might not- and the lawyer might know something none of the house staff does!) NPCs are in various rooms and you must be in those rooms to talk to them- none of them will yell across, that'd be rude.

Also, remember to follow all dice-related instructions! If you do forget, do not delete your post; instead, go roll in the main thread and link your roll to your post.
