The Garden of the Umekikana

The home of the Umekikana family is a wide, heavily forested area that is set deeper into the outer limits of Kumogakure's village borders. The garden is loosely defined by barrier poles that have been thrust into the ground and carved with the characters for the three last names of the family.

Looking out from the main house, Himito's eyes moved wearily off the view of the creek rolling down through their property. Hanging off her hip was the familiar weight of gauntlets. Being at home made it kind of moot to actually wear them. Something itched in the back of her brain, as her eyes tried to close in upon themselves. Thirty-one hours... Can't sleep. It was a constant fight with herself, her sister and her parents. Pushing herself off the from of the doorway, the girl stretched. She'd grab Hon, see if they couldn't find some scum bag to pummel. Not that her sister would approve.

Fighting down a yawn, she began to hunt down her sister on the estate; as far as everyone was aware, Himito had slept last night. Maybe only three hours, unable to keep herself lying in bed any longer yet, but it had boiled down to her impatience. "Shosho?" called the girl wearily, "Let's get out here! I need to do something." Sitting around in the estate didn't do anything productive. Simply drove her mad.

Honsho was sleeping, quite nicely too, when her sister's voice cut through the nice dream she was having, Jerking upright and falling slightly out of her bed, Hon landed on her shoulder with a grunt "Oh for the sake of all that is sane, Himi!" Hon nearly wept, seeing the height of the moon's light as it came in her window, "Why?!" she crawled across the floor and poked her head out of the door to stare blearily at Himi as she came down the hall. The short side of her hair was sticking up like she'd been rubbing it against the floor and the curly, longer side was puffed up "Get out where? Do what? We have academy in the morning. Well, more in the morning than now since it IS morning." she sat back on her heels, her shirt pulling up at her middle. She was wearing undies but the heat of the summer made everything so humid that she'd abandoned her pants. They were, however, still on her left thigh "What could you possibly want to do?" she leaned into the door frame, fighting a yawn.

The sun hadn't quite risen, it was difficult to really tell the time of day at this point for her. It was either dark, or it was sunny. That usually gave her a time frame. It was up to Honsho to really determine the fine details of what time of day it was. It was a brief thump, indicating that her sister was waking up. Better that she hit the floor... It was a glum thought. No one dared listen to her about sleep. If Honsho never stirred from her slumber. Shaking her head, she wished away the dark thoughts. She was really pushing it. "I need to get out," answered the elder twin, closing the distance between her and her sister's bedroom. Flexing her digits, knuckles cracked quietly. "We'll be back in time for class. Let's... just take a walk." It wasn't a good cover up. She just needed to get Hon going. She'd be awake. The adrenaline would get her stirring again, and they'd make it through another dreary day.

Staring up at her twin, Honsho felt a pang of sorrow for her. No matter how much she tried to help Himi, her sister was either unable to or unwilling to sleep. Sometimes Hon would wonder if forcing Himi to sleep with her, like they had when they were kids, might help but it never seemed the right time to offer. Even now "Its not the getting back in time..." she mumbled and then stood, yanking her shorts on the right way. Disappearing back into her room, she came back out with a light sleeveless pullover that was tightly tied around her waist "Just a little one, ok?" Hon warned, yawning as she closed her bedroom door. Reaching out, she took her sister's hand and interlaced their fingers with a sleepy rub of her eyes. Despite the lack of sleep Himi frequently caused her, Hon always felt better around her sister. Maybe it was a twin thing but knowing she could be near Himi made her feel safe. After all, she had saved Hon "To the garden, then?" she asked, rubbing the scars under her eye with a finger.

Himito stood there, watching. Waiting. Honsho would come. It never really failed. Shifting a little bit in the hall, the silence was broken with the slight ting of steel on steel. Father always told her that she couldn't kill anyone out of spite. Rage. It didn't mean that someone couldn't bleed for her bad times. Her sister showed up again, adding another layer of clothing to her outfit. Beside her, fingers intertwined. Hon wasn't broken like her. "I suppose the garden will have to do," answered the elder twin. They wouldn't make it into town to really thrash someone, be it herself or someone poor sap who said the wrong thing. "The garden should be fine," she nodded, knowing they wouldn't be bothered at least. "Sorry I do this to you." It was a staple in their nightly conversations at this point. She'd wake her sister inevitably, feel bad for doing it, and then they'd get back and her sister would sleep. She'd worry endlessly. Unless she blacked out along the way. "So, I'm thinking up the creek and back?"

Hon waved off the apology like she always did "It doesn't matter." she replied, stretching one arm up over her shoulder as she started walking. No doubt they would trace the usual walk, down the hall and out onto the open patio that led straight to the garden. But first "We can do the creek but!" Hon turned so she was walking backwards in front of her sister, free hand lifting one finger up to make her point "When we get back, you have to stay in my room tonight." Hon stopped in front of the patio, her back to it so that she was facing Himi "And you can't get out of bed until the sunlight touches the edge of the pad." leaning forward on her toes, Hon lifted her chin to look down her nose at Himi.

It was hard to believe they were twins sometimes. Honsho had very little skin color and her hair was a white/gray blonde. Himito had a rich brown color with brilliant pinks and purples streaked through it. Even their eyes were a different color. But while they were opposites in color, they were identical down to their bones. Same shaped eyes, nose, mouth...even their ears were the same size though Hon had a little tiny scar behind her left ear. It was like whatever path that had created them had decided to paint them different colors. And it made Hon love her sister even more. It made them the same but unique, entirely different in so many ways with an identical deepness that only they could see. Looking at Himi, seeing her for everything she was, Honsho suddenly threw both arms around her twin and hugged her tightly "You know I love you, Himi." she mumbled into her sister's shoulder, eyes squeezed shut.

An endless cycle from the two of them. Apologies and discarding said apology. A smile rose up from the weary teen's lips, happy to be reassured. It was impossible to really be certain, not the way she was so wearisome on everyone's patience. An arm around her, and then moments later, her sister was walking before her, finger raised to make a point. Honsho made a peculiar demand of her, upon their return, she would stay in bed with her sister, until the sun rose. A twitch arose on the corner of her mouth. It was utterly inhibiting to get her to stay in a bed for too long. She wouldn't disagree though, whether or not her sister was safe sleeping, Himito had disturbed her rest.

"Fine, Shosho. You win this time," answered the girl with a shake of her head. Standing on the patio, looking at her sister, she didn't really think too much. Fatigue weighed down on metaphorical rhetoric that she assumed others thought about, and instead she let her senses be the only information gathered to a degree. It was as close to sleep as she let herself get to so very often, startled only momentarily by her sister closing the distance and beginning a hug. As Himi slowly stirred, she wrapped her arms about the twin, nuzzling her affectionately. "I love you too, Shosho."

She didn't stir too much, taking in her sister's warmth a minute--Himito was notoriously under dressed for the time of night like usual--before breaking off her hug, beginning to lead her sister out the patio and into the garden. They'd reach the creek before too long, and her escape would be over before too long. Hopping off the trail that led to the small bridge over the pond, Himi led the way. No water fowl were out, the only time she'd even enjoy their garden. "You know, I really don't want to go in tomorrow," Himi commented. It was only because she wanted to be free of the academy that she even bothered to show up at all.

Of course she had won. Hon lifted her chin as Him hugged her in return, feeling the warmth that passed between them. A sigh escaped Hon as she and Himi broke apart to continue walking. Stepping down from the porch, Hon let her toes feel the damp grass before she stepped onto the pavers that made a small path down to the creek and then around it. Following Himi off the trail, Hon slowed down carefully to delay the return. It wasn't that she wanted to delay the wonderful return to her bed...but she knew Himi wanted to stay out as long as possible.
Releasing her sister's hand, Hon crouched down to examine something in the grass as Himi spoke "You never want to go, silly." she replied over her shoulder, scooping a tiny frog into her hand. It was about the size of her pinky finger and it clung to the edge of her thumb as she held it up to examine it "We'll graduate in less than a month. I know it's as interesting as a corpse dancing the tap but at least it will be better than where father and mother are moving. Out in the basics..." Hon giggled as the frog moved along her thumb and onto her palm "There would be nothing to do out there. It would be so boring." She didn't admit that she was going to miss their parents. Despite the strangeness of their family, the light and dark literals of their bloodlines, they were close. And she adored them both even with their eccentricities "But after the academy...after the academy we can do anything." she twisted at the shoulders to look up at Himi, a brightness to her eyes "How can it not be amazing?"

The pace they kept through the mild brush along the creek, their conversation had shifted on, and Hon presented her rationality. It was true, Himi felt there were better things to do than practice bunshin no jutsu and throw kunai. She'd done it enough over the last couple of years anyways. "A corpse tap dancing would be interesting though, I mean, who would animate it for the purpose of dancing? That opens options and questions, Shosho," replied rather dryly. Mother and father were leaving for their home outside the village, leaving them to do their own thing within. Inevitably leading up to Himito's trouble making, once she was free to move about. It was a trudge, but graduation practically spelled out freedom for the two. "There's a lot to see. It's utterly fascinating." She smiled at her sister crouched in the brush. It was mostly a tool to avoid moving with their parents out of the village, when they could be doing so much more. "Fine though, I guess I'll go still." Not that she'd mentioned she was going to skip it, it had been implied. Only one more month and then she'd never have to bear the burden of wasting another day. Himito turned her gaze away from her sister up to the moon in a near silent pout. The gratification wasn't near immediate enough.
