Verdant Cavern is a small cave off of Route 2 where the first trial takes place. It requires a lot of climbing and has wild Pokémon living in various holes. The Totem Pokémon Gumshoos and Raticate dwell here

Trial #1: Verdant Cavern
Trials do not need to be done in order, require 15 wild pokemon encounter posts to initiate, and reward one dimensional shard upon completion. You must roll for the attacks of both the Totem, and any allies it has out, unless specific attacks are listed for certain rounds. Whoever goes first is pre-determined and fixed, and cannot be changed by items or stat changes. This is to make things a bit more challenging for the easier trials, and easier for the more difficult ones.
Trial Pokemon cannot be caught, and Totem pokemon cannot be one-hit K.O.ed, and have Totem Aura, which gives them individual boosts to certain stats. These boosts will be stated for each totem. The totem pokemon give out set exp, however, the total experience earned per battle depends on how many pokemon are earned, and how long the battle takes, and EXP Items do not effect EXP earned from these battles. When you have completed a trial, please quote a mod for approval.
PLEASE NOTE: This system is very much in beta. There's no real way to test it that wouldn't hold things up, so we roughed this out to put out with the rest of the guild. As issues arise (trials being too easy, or too difficult), we will make adjustments. This means that if you are one of the first people doing the trials, you should be aware that other people may have to work harder, or may have it easier, depending on the trial, and the adjustments we make. Please know this going in, so that there's a reduced chance of hard feelings or accusations of things being 'unfair'. We're trying out best.

It didn't take long until Hayes was inside Verdant Cavern alongside Kent, having going ahead like Freddy had instructed until they'd found the cavern. Inside the cave had a strange atmosphere, maybe because of the light filtered through the ceiling, but there was something else... and it sounded like Kent had a similar feeling about it as Hayes heard him whistle and remark on the cavern before pulling out the camera he always had on him.
"Interesting is definitely a word for it..." Hayes replied, although more so under his breath than for Kent to hear him as he was still looking around at the sights; it would be interesting to see how Kent's pictures turned out afterward and if he'd be able to capture the atmosphere.

Kent followed Hayes into Verdant Cavern after being shown the way by their other friend Freddy. The young photographer was so caught off guard by this cavern that he hadn't even noticed that their friend was missing. Verdant Cavern was a moss covered cave with many hills and slopes, and sunlight filtered through holes in the roof. The whole area had a strange and mystical aura too it. It reminded him of the Ancient Tomb he and another trainer uncovered while he was traveling through the Hoenn region.
Kent let out a whistle that echoed and filled the entire cavern before looking at his partner Pokemon Pikachu that was on his shoulder. "Woah, this sure is an interesting place." Kent remarked, pulling out his camera.
After a few photos Kent looked over to Hayes, who he was sure was just as impressed with Verdant Cavern as he was. "So... Is there some special process to starting the Trial, Freddy...?" Kent asked, trailing off as he realized Freddy wasn't with them anymore.
Before he could even get answer though he heard the sudden scurrying of tiny feet, and as he turned towards the noise a small brown dart launched past him, taking the camera out of his hand. The blur landed, revealing a Rockruff like the one in Professor Kukui's lab, holding his camera in his mouth. The rock dog Pokemon stood under one of the beams of light that shown through the cavern and playfully gnawed on the camera. Kent put his hands up and slowly walked towards the Pokemon.
"Be good, uh... Sunny. Give me back the camera and I'll let you come with me. How's that sound?" He asked in a soft voice, inching closer to the Rockruff and his camera.
The Rockruff seemed to contemplate the offer for a moment before leaping into Kent's arms with the camera still in its mouth. "Phew, good girl." He said with a chuckle before tapping a Pokeball against it and catching it. He then returned the camera to around his neck and walked back over to Hayes.

"It certainly is." Ilima suggested, unable to help but overhear the photographer's commentary. "Missing someone...?" Ilima tilted his head, noting the way Kent had seemed to be asking someone about trials who was no longer there. "A shame, but I would be happy to inform you of anything regarding trials here. It is my job after all~" He smiled courteously, brushing some of his hair back to reveal the captain's medal hanging from his ear before extending a hand to shake in greeting. "I'm Ilima, the trial captain and gym leader here. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, mister....?" He trailed off, pausing with the intent of Kent to fill in the blanks of his name in return for his own.

Kent spun around from looking back near the entrance of the cave to his side where he heard an unfamiliar voice. Standing a two feet away from Kent and Hayes was a tanned man with pink hair and a kind expression on his face. He was also wearing a strange white stone bracelet on his right hand that vaguely resembled the Mega Bracelets he had seen while in Kalos. The man went on to say that he'd be happy to tell him more about the trial and revealed that his name was Ilima, the trial captain and gym leader. Ilima held out his hand as his voice trailed off.
"Greetings Captain Ilima- here!" Kent said, reaching out and shaking his hand with a firm grip. "I'm Kent Briar, from Johto. I'm on trip around the world to photograph the rarest locations and Pokemon, and I was told the best way to do that here in Alola is through these Trials. Our friend Freddy is missing; he's from Alola and was the one who told us about the Trial here. I'm sure he's fine, probably just got distracted outside." The photographer went on to explain.

Ilima smiled as Kent greeted him warmly, returning his handshake and introduction with his own. "I see~ Well Johto isn't too far from here, but it's still quite a trip. I'm glad you could make the voyage. Alola is quite visually stunning, no doubt you will find plenty of natural beauty to photograph." He suggested. "Trials are certainly one way to go about it, though with your friend being a native, and you being from Johto, I should probably clarify something... There are two kinds of trials here. The first is my trial, which is much like what you would know as a gym battle. If you win, I will reward you with my stamp in a little Alola gym stamp booklet, which is our form of a badge. The second is the island trial, which you would face alone in the back of this cavern and come to me once you have succeeded. You are welcome to try one or both, if you'd like. Either way, I'm sure you would be able to find something worth capturing in your lens." Ilima explained. "So, which will it be, Kent Briar?" He made a small elegant gesture with his hand, awaiting Kent's decision.

Kent raised his eyes behind his glasses as Ilima explained the different between the island challenge and the island trials. One trial consisted on battling Ilima as a sort of gym leader, and the other was to travel deeper into the Verdant Cavern to face an unknown challenge. While the second definitely piqued his interest, it had been a long time since he challenged a gym leader. At least officially. Ilima finished the explanation of the two routes trial goers could take, and then asked him which one would Kent choose. Kent's expression slowly grew into a grin as he held out his arm, which his shiny Pikachu hopped onto from his shoulder.
"What do you say, bud? Wanna take on Alola's version the Pokemon League while we're here?" He asked his Pikachu while handing it a small purple orb. The Pikachu took the item and nodded determinedly. Kent chuckled and looked back to Ilima. "Well then, Captain Ilima. We challenge you to a battle for your stamp!"

Hayes saw Kent in the middle of catching a wild Pokemon, reminiscent of the one in the shack on the beach, when he finally looked back in his direction after hearing him mention Freddy a few seconds before. It didn't look like the local had caught back up with them yet - or that Kent had even noticed he wasn't with them. Before he could speak up however an unfamiliar voice did instead and introduced themselves as Ilima, the Trial Captain that Freddy had told them about. Ilima explained the differences between the trials, and then Hayes watched as Kent decided on the battle challenge after a bit of deliberation with the Pikachu now on his arm.
"Good luck, Kent!" Hayes said after Kent had challenged the Captain, clasping him on one shoulder and giving him a shake. "And while you're in the middle of that, I think I'll walk around and check out the rest of the cavern... maybe find Freddy, too." He added as an afterthought, more interested in exploring the cavern than battling Ilima, before he continued. "Oh, but I'll be back in time to see you get that stamp." Hayes finished, letting go of the photographer's shoulder and giving Ilima a little nod in recognition; he'd introduce himself to the Captain when he wasn't about to start a battle with his friend.

Sorry for the delay! When you posted and had Kent's pikachu hold a life orb, I was reminded of a few edits we needed to make, since the life orb was included in that list. The life orb should only sap HP every time an attack is used, rather than every turn. With that straightened out and announced, let's continue!
Leader Ilima
Ilima watched as Kent chose to accept his challenge, and darker shaded pikachu running out onto his arm with a small orb. "I was hoping that would be your answer." He grinned, pulling out one of his ultra balls to release a smeargle onto the cavern floor. "If you're looking for a challenge, then we accept!" Ilima took on a stronger pose, his elegant demeanor shifting into a battle ready one. People often said that he had a different aura about him when battling, it was probably why he was known as the 'prince of the trainer's school'. Smeargle swung his brush tail enthusiastically. "Perhaps Smeargle can help you find your artistic muse for the photos you'll be taking." He suggested with a smirk.

Kent smiled back at Hayes as his friend patted him on the shoulder and wished him good luck on his battle against Ilima. The photographer nodded and waved him off with his free hand. After Hayes went off to explore deeper into the cave Kent turned his attention back to Ilima who sent out a Smeargle from an Ultra Ball. As a Johto native Kent was familiar with the Sketch Pokemon and its ability to copy moves. The photographer chuckled at the Trial Captain's art comment. "The only thing I'm finding after this battle is a fancy new stamp." Kent said with a playful grin in response.
"Now let's do this, Flash!" Kent said, throwing his arm up and launching his Pikachu several feet into the air before bringing a pointed finger down towards Ilima and Smeargle. "Electro Ball!"
Pikachu flipped through the air, gathering electricity in a large ball at its tail as it reached the peak of the throw. It then flipped downward, flinging the ball straight at Smeargle. Pikachu would then land on all fours after delivering the attack, waiting for the counter-attack and its trainer's orders.

Ilima chuckled at Kent's retort. "We shall see about that." He suggested, watching Kent work well together with his partner, giving the pikachu a bit of launching distance so that Flash could strike with an electro ball. It was fairly strong thanks to the life orb, but it wasn't strong enough to knock Ilima's smeargle out. "Not bad, but you'll have to do better than that if you want to win!" Ilima gestured with his arm. "Smeargle, let's heat things up with an ember!" Smeargle waved his tail around, drawing out a little fire symbol in the air with green paint, which then lit up in a blaze and went shooting at flash, successfully burning the pikachu. "We haven't a moment to lose, follow up with a quick attack!" Ilima instructed proudly, sending the smeargle dashing at the pikachu to try and get in another hit before the electric mouse had time to recover.

Running late to work, I'll fill in the post during my break. Updated the fight though. Man I got unlucky with that burn, could've been a draw. lol
Kent's Pikachu fainted from the accumulated damage after its Quick Attack counterattack. Disappointed but still proud, Kent sent out his Exeggutor, which used Confusion to knock out Smeargle in retaliation, unless it was fast enough to get a Quick Attack off in time.

Leader Ilima
Ilima and his smeargle were surprised by the surge of speed Flash used with his own quick attack to intercept their own. It was fast, but still not enough, and in combination with smeargle's attack, the life orb, and burn sapping away at the pikachu's strength, the electric type went down. Next Kent sent out a familiar pokemon, an alolan exeggutor. "Ah, I'm surprised that you wouldn't have a Kanto exeggutor, being from Johto." Ilima mused. "No matter, we will still take it down." Ilima suggested with a gentle smile that held a eloquent and friendly smugness. As Kent directed his pokemon to attack, Ilima knew smeargle wouldn't be able to withstand the attack, so he had to make a command quickly. "Quick Attack!" Ilima urged the smeargle, allowing it to rush forward and slam into the palm tree pokemon just before bearing the brunt of it's psychic counterattack. With a content but pitied sigh, Ilima returned his pokemon before pulling out a second ultra ball. "I must admit, I didn't think you'd get this far. Now I'll be forced to go all out on you." He chuckled, sending out his gumshoos next. "Don't disappoint me now~" He teased lightly, letting Kent have the first attack.

Pretty sure I used all my luck for the year when I rolled Buzzwole for the Mystery Egg event. lol Also just realized it would have been way better just to give Pikachu a Choice Scarf instead of that Life Orb. Oh well~
Kent watched as the Smeargle hit Stretch with one more Quick Attack before being taken down Confusion. He'd be lying if he said he was surprised by that last minute counter attack, since he tried to do the same thing a moment ago with Flash. Ilima remarked he was surprised to see Kent using an Alola form Exeggutor instead of the ones native to his home region of Johto. "I left most of my Pokemon from home at the PC. Figured I'd catch a team of Pokemon here in Alola for that full Island Challenge experience." Kent explained.
Ilima then sent out a new Pokemon; a strange bipedal Pokemon with brown and blonde fur. A quick Pokedex scan revealed it to be a Gumshoos. The Trial Captain then remarked about not expecting Kent to get so far and that he'd be going all out now. The photographer smiled and nodded, adjusting his glasses before pointing at Ilima's Gumshoos. "I don't want you holding back anyway. Stretch, use Dragon Hammer!"
Exeggutor didn't even need to move to connect the attack. It simply quickly dropped its 30-foot neck down at break-neck speeds and crashed into the Gumshoos.
