Hayes laughed himself out after a while, and then went about fixing up all of the Pokemon he'd used in the battle after he'd gotten the sludge off his hand. Goomy wandered back after everything was said and done, and he could tell it felt bad about what it had done... or didn't do. He didn't want to hold it against the little Pokemon however, and after a scratch behind it's ears he figured it was in the past; that had been an intimidating wild Pokemon after all.
"Oh, I don't even know what it's called come to think of it." Hayes suddenly realized after he'd thought about it. The only thing he'd known was it looked a bit like the Pokemon he'd encountered back in Hau'oli, but he didn't know what that had been either. Hayes would've used the Pokedex on it, but when he'd been in the middle of healing up his Pokemon it had disappeared along with the local Rattata. The fact he'd missed an opportunity to scan them was a disappointment, but he figured he'd get another opportunity to do it... hopefully it wouldn't take another battle like this one, was all. Hayes smiled despite himself at the thought and prepared to head back inside the cavern when he had Goomy unexpectedly nudge him in order to get his attention.
"What is... it...?" He asked, but trailed off as he looked in the direction that the Pokemon was urging him toward. There was something in a handful of feet off the ground, above an old rock covered in dirt, and then all of the sudden... there wasn't. He rubbed his eyes and looked again, but there wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Hayes exchanged looks with the Pokemon who looked as confused as he imagined he did, and walked over towards the stone he hadn't noticed in all the commotion; it was apparently an old podium underneath all of the dirt, intricate carvings all along it's surface, but he couldn't tell it's purpose. A bit of time passed with Hayes examining it before he remembered he'd left Kent to a battle, and he left it alone to head back inside the cavern alongside Goomy in order to check up on him - and maybe warn him about the Pokemon waiting farther in the cavern.

Kent hadn't walked very far when he suddenly remembered something and knelt down, fumbling through his bag as Rockruff walked up next to him. It rubbed its rocky fur against him as he pulled out a few Potions. "Here we go! Good battling Sunny, let's get you healed up." He said with a smile as he sprayed the rock-dog back to full health. Sunny excitedly barked and spun around once in response. "All better. Now let's go find Hayes." Kent remarked, standing back up.
It didn't taken long for Kent to spot Hayes heading towards him, away from deeper into the tunnel. Before Kent could even flag Hayes down, who seemed to be thinking about something, Rockruff ran up to him and Goomy, happily yipping at the two. "Hey, Hayes! How'd it go in there?" He called out as the two closed the distance.

"Kent!" He called back, watching Kent's new Pokemon run across the distance to greet them. "Oh, it went alright, I guess? It turns out the cavern is a lot bigger than I thought, and there's a little place farther in..." Hayes started to explain, but trailed off as he thought about it. "...and I might've passed the Island Trial, huh." He finished after a moment, looking down at the gooey Pokemon at his side who was in the process of keeping away from the energetic dog. It hadn't occurred to him at the time, but it would've explained how it felt like the wild Pokemon been watching him - and it's strength.
"What about you?" Hayes asked after he'd processed that he might've inadvertently passed an island trial, hoping everything had gone as well for Kent in his absence as he looked back up at him. "I'd hoped to get back in time to watch the battle, but if you're wandering around back here...?" He trailed off again, hoping to hear what had happened.

Kent laughed out loud when Hayes came to the realization that he might've beaten the Totem Trial in the back of the cave without even realizing. "Haha, no kidding? Well done then!" He said, giving him a firm pat on the shoulder and a big grin. He was impressed Hayes had been able to beat the trial, especially after Ilima had voiced his concerns.
When Hayes' question about if Kent had beat Ilima had trailed off, Kent took a step back, and struck the final pose of the Normalium-Z dance Ilima had taught him, making sure to show off the Z-Bracelet he had given. "It was a challenge for sure. Flash and Stretch are still KO'd. Sunny there came through at the end though." He said, leaving the pose and bending down to pet his Rockruff and extend a hand to the Goomy.

Hayes smiled as he was commended for apparently undergoing the Totem Trial, still a bit bewildered at the fact he'd done it without realizing... or at least he assumed he had, looking back on the encounter now. It had been the only thing that had happened during his time wandering around the cavern, after all, and it had felt a lot different than any other wild Pokemon encounter he'd had before. It sounded like Kent's trial had been as difficult as his own, however, as he listened to him fill him in on what had happened.
"Oh, really? It sounds like you had as hard a time as I did, then." Hayes said, remembering how surprised he'd been when his Scyther had been beaten. When Kent bent over to pet the Pokemon he'd caught earlier, who Hayes assumed was Sunny, he smiled at how it sounded like they'd both gotten through their respective trials in part because of the Pokemon they'd acquired after arriving on Alola - which felt fitting to him. "...what's with the bracelet, though?" He asked belatedly as he watched Goomy wobble toward his hand and press its slimy head against it. The bracelet had reminded him of something, but he couldn't quite remember what.
"Hold on, no, don't tell me if it's something to do with the trial." Hayes said hurriedly, holding up a hand as he did. "I'll have to go and find Ilima and check if that was the trial I did, and I'll find out then." He added.

Kent rubbed a hand on Goomy's head-sized body, not too bothered by all the slime that immediately adhered to his skin. The photographer looked up at Hayes who was back-tracking on asking what his new bracelet was about, and a sly grin grew across his face as he stood up and flicked the slime off of his hand.
"Just you wait, Hayes. Alola has quite a few surprises left for us it seems." Kent said with a chuckle, curious to see how well Hayes would handle Ilima's challenge.
Kent then looked past Hayes towards the entrance of the cave. "Speaking of surprises, any clue where Freddy is?"
They hadn't seen the third member of their group in some time, and Kent had more than half a mind to go outside and look for Alolan himself.

How long has it been? Freddy thought as he made the long climb up and around the mountain towards Verdant Cavern. Freddy had just escaped from the Hau'Oli Cemetery which had made time seem sluggish and drawn out, but this walk up towards Verdant Cavern had felt like it had taken months, or around thirty-two days. It felt like an eternity since he had captured that Growlithe who was now safely stored away in Freddy's storage system, which sent his new team mates to his home, to stay with his mum.
As Freddy reached the entrance to Verdant Cavern, he heard voices echo from within. Checking around the immediate area, he took his first few steps inside. Looking around he cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled out. "Ooooiiii~ Kent! Hayes! You guys in there?" he asked. He pondered not only what his friends had been up to or if time truly passed as much as he had thought, that he would be greeted by two elderly forms of his travelling companions.

Soon Sullivan was slowly wheeling his way up to the entrance to the cavern, coming to a halt and looking around. The cavern itself was gorgeous, with streams of light shining through the holes up above reflecting off the vegetation gave it an intense and mysterious feel. He took a deep breath of the fresh air, glancing down at Junpei as he snuffled at the ground before shooting a look to his trainer. With a silent nod, they continued forward into the cavern. It’d probably take a little bit to get to the area where the champion was residing, if he was even in this cavern but it seemed like a good time to do a bit of training. He pulled out Mana’s pokeball, unleashing the Rowlett who fluttered her wings happily before landing on the ground. The grass owl turned her attention to the man who once more gave a few hand gestures in her direction. She still didn’t really get what he was doing but when pointed towards some of the tall grass, she seemed to understand.
Or not. Her attention turned away from the grass and instead Mana raised a claw to scratch the side of her head. Sullivan frowned, looking annoyed at her actions. A wild pokemon seemed to think the same as well; a screech game from the nearby grass and the Yungoos flung itself at the Rowlett, catching her by surprise.

Sullivan frowned, quickly retrieving some potions from his bag and hauling over to a sobbing Mana. He knelt in front of them both, administering a few squirts to Junpei first before turning his focus on the Rowlett. She was visibly distraught from the battle; the Yungoos had done quite a number and if Junpei hadn’t intervened a trip to a healer to revive her might’ve been in order.
Junpei gave a shake of his head, thankful for the healing and going on alert while his trainer dealt with the pokemon. Mana flinched and continued in her sobbing even after Sullivan had healed her up; it was a good thing he was deaf because the cacophony of noise she was making would’ve damaged eardrums. Tucking the empty bottle away, the young man reached out and patted the Rowlett on the head to soothe her. She was being a big baby about this honestly, but there was no real way to tell her that. He raised his free hand up, placing a finger to his lips to indicate she quiet down. Eventually she stopped with her hooting and hollering into, from the vibrations under his hand, small hiccups.
He dropped his hand and withdrew the other, gesturing with them both for her to look up at him. Mana sniffed and redirected her gaze up at the man who had a gentle but concerned look written on his face. Once he had the birds face he began to gesture; first crossing his wrists over one another back and forth once before pointing to his eyes and making a sort of mimicking tear falling gesture. The Rowlett stared a moment, head tilting a full 90 degrees to the side as she seemed to try and decode his signing.

Well, at least she didn’t seem sad anymore. Rather now, she looked confused. But that was to be expected; she couldn’t exactly follow his signing after all; that would take some time and practice. For now, Sullivan gave her a gentle smile and patted her gently on the head, gesturing to the grass once more. Junpei gave a bark at the Rowlett which caught her attention. He seemed to be informing her that she was expected to keep fighting and after a moment of contemplation she gave a hoot and ruffled the feathers of her wings. Alright fine, so long as Sullivan intended to keep her healed. Or maybe if she could just avoid getting hit.
The young man grinned and got back to his feet. Good, she still seemed willing to train. He glanced about once more before picking up a rock and chucking it into a nearby grass patch. The rock found a mark and he watched curiously a moment as the grass shuffled and stopped, a line of ground that was clearly being disturbed under the crust of the dirt making its way in their direction. It stopped sort and a Diglett popped out, staring menacingly at the group with a little lump on its head. It didn’t seem to happy and Sullivan just frowned, quickly motioning at Mana and pointing to the Diglett in question. Now was her time to shine.

Sullivan pulled out another potion and knelt to heal up Mana as she flew back and landed in front of him, the defeated Diglett fleeing back into the grass. Mana looked rather agitated with all the damage she’d taken which was no surprise; he’d even had to heal her in the middle of the battle to assure she could complete it. Not a practice he wanted to get into but for now, would probably be necessary.
Sullivan gently rubbed Mana on the head again to try and ease her annoyance, picking up another rock and chucking it towards the grass again. They still needed to keep training and he looked slightly surprised as yet another Diglett appeared to challenge them, looking just as miffed as the last one. He had faith Mana could handle this one as well.

Sullivan gave Mana a few more squirts from the potion bottle to heal her up once again, tucking the empty container away and locating a new one. The training was going slowly but surely, but he wasn’t entirely sure she’d be able to participate in the leader battle at this rate. He was feeling a bit antsy himself to take on the challenge after all.
Still though, he was going to train for a little while longer; help Mana grow just a bit stronger. That way, if anything, while they were travelling she could train more and eventually catch up with the rest of his team. Really, it was worth considering some items to help boost her up and make her more powerful. That was an interesting thought…. Hm. Sullivan shook his head, resuming his chuck and summon routine. This time he managed to hit a flying Zubat and with a screech the thing immediately launched itself into battle.

An agitated growl escaped the back of Sullivan’s throat as he healed up both Mana and Junpei. That Zubat had been more than the usual annoyance; it was strong and vicious and clearly didn’t appreciate being struck by a rock, which showed as it attempted to devastate both of his pokemon. Junpei was luckily able to get in the last few chomps to send the damn thing flying but still, that was too close for comfort.
Mana ruffled her feathers and gave an exasperated hoot, expression crestfallen. She really wasn’t enjoying this training session and the young man could read that much on her face. Still, he just needed her to go a little longer and then they could move on. Once more he tried to comfort her, her expression only wavering a bit. Just one more battle and then they could be done. Of course, he couldn’t voice this to her, but he gestured as best he could to convey as much and she seemed to understand. With a nod, he retrieved a rock for the last time and chucked it into the grass, watching as a Yungoos emerged grumbling and giving them all fierce glares. Alright, this was manageable.

A sigh of relief passed Sullivan’s lips. That fight was considerably less annoying than the one with the Zubat and Mana seemed a little more chipper with the win. Of course, she’d still taken a good amount of damage all the same, but nothing that a quick spritz with the potion couldn’t fix, which was exactly what he did. Mana chirped and flapped her wings, either grateful to be healed or at no longer having to deal with battling for now. Probably the later.
Sullivan got back to his feet, collecting his things. That was about as much training as he was willing to put Mana through for now and it was best he started looking for the leader to challenge. He made sure everyone was properly topped off as a final precaution before beginning his way deeper into the cavern.
