With Mana occupying a shoulder and Junpei just ahead, Sullivan rolled his way through the cavern. He was certain the first champion resided in the area from what he’d researched; it would just take a little bit of searching. Which was fine; Sullivan was more than willing to take in the lovely scenery while he tried to locate the individual.
Which they spent a good twenty minutes looking at. He’d gone up a few of the inclines to the next levels to look, taking care to avoid the grassy areas so that they weren’t trapped in combat. There wasn’t much evidence that anyone was around though and so they continued up further until finally they’d reached the top ledge. There, to his surprise, was a young man etching notes into a journal in his hands. He seemed to realize he was no longer alone though, shutting the journal and peering over his shoulder with a soft smile.
”Well hello there. You’ve come quite a ways haven’t you?” Ilima remarked as he turned to fully face Sullivan. The blue-haired fellow frowned a bit, tilting his head some before giving a curt nod. He raised his hands; first gesturing to himself and giving a slight wave of both hands in front of himself before fisting both hands as though giving a thumb up and bringing the two together in a fist bump and ending with a pointed gesture at Ilima. The gym leader stood quiet a moment, a furrowed expression on his face as he seemed to attempt to decipher what it was Sullivan was suggesting.
”I apologize but I don’t quite follow.” Sullivan gave a little nod, digging in his bag for his sketch book and flipping to a free page. Quickly he scrawled a message and pointed it to the champion. 'I’m here to challenge you.' The man blinked and chuckled, head slowly nodding. ”Ah! I see, I apologize. I’ll certainly furnish you with a battle. I do hope you’re ready.” Sullivan just nodded, tucking the sketchbook away and taking up his place on the opposite of the gym leader. Alright, time to do this.

Ilima kept a smile on his face, even as he returned his fallen Gumshoos and gathered himself up. Even though his time at the training school had come to an end, it was clear that he still had a bit of learning to do. "Congratulations, challenger!" Still the positive ray of sunshine he was, the trial captain took a moment to gather all of Sullivan's winnings--there were quite a few--before he approached the individual. Now.. was the fellow deaf, or mute? It wasn't like he could tell just by looking at him, but the sign language, and then eventual writing, revealed that he could not verbally communicate. Ah... he'd just try not to speak too fast. "These are for you: my stamp, the Normalium Z as well as a bracelet for it, and Rock Smash," he explained, handing each over one at a time. Iliama stepped back. "To activate the Normalium Z, you'll have to use the following dance." In a series of slow, calculated movements, he demonstrated the dance for Sullivan, and afterwards, with another smile, he gave a short bow. "It was a pleasure to meet you. If you'd like, feel free to challenge the Totem Pokémon as well."

Sullivan felt relieved, a grin spreading across his face as he returned Kairi after her victory over the Gumshoos. That Z move had caused him to panic a bit; he was aware that they were powerful but he’d never quite seen it first hand against a pokemon of his own before. Still, the Sharpedo pulled through all the same to cement their victory. Inoke had been great too, simply knocking out the Smeargle in one hit. But expected no less from either of the two; they were family pokemon after all who’d worked a lot beside his father and older brother. He couldn’t imagine either training them any less than 100%.
Subduing his grin to a pleasant smile, he watched as Ilima approached him with his winnings, eyeing them excitedly. There was one that he really had his eye on which was the Z bracelet; he knew he’d get one early in the challenge but wasn’t sure just when so it was nice to see he could make use of it early on. He focused on Ilima as the man began to speak, offering the winnings one at a time; he could tell the leader wasn’t certain of what to make of his lack of talking and that he seemed to be speaking slowly; not quite the best but Sullivan could piece together what was being said all the same. The stamp as proof of his win, the bracelet (which he quickly attached to his wrist with a grin) and the same Z crystal that Ilima had used in their battle. He watched closely as the man preformed the dance, stepping back and semi-mimicking the actions to try and cement them in his mind. He understood that they were necessary to activate the power of Z crystals and that each had their own movements. When he had a bit of an idea exactly of the moves he tugged out his sketchbook and scribbled a quick caricature down, just in case he ever forgot.
With that settled and the last of his winnings retrieved and stored away, he flipped to the same page he’d scribbled his challenge on before. He’d have preferred to sign again but didn’t want to confuse the man any further. He’d been nice enough to talk slow so he could lip read a bit at least.
'Thank you.' He flashed the page at Ilima and gave a little bow of his own, quickly storing the sketchbook away. Assuring that both Junpei and Mana were ready (the Rowlett seemed in a state of awe now) he gave a final wave farewell to other individual before starting his way out the cave. He thought he recalled something about… Totem pokemon? Maybe he’d do that. Maybe…

Sullivan went down one of the natural ramp ways away from where he’d done battle with Ilima, eyes on his communicator as he slowly rolled his way through the cavern. He was aware there was a trial challenge in the area with a totem pokemon and he considered increasingly the idea of taking it on. Why not go ahead and complete as many challenges as he could? It’d be a testament to his skills really; it was one thing to simply do the gym leader challenges and all but well… the totem and kahunas on top of that? That was really getting into the Alolan tradition.
The more he thought about it, the more determined he felt. Of course, before he took on any new challenge he needed to heal his team up first. Pausing now on the lower levels of the cavern he unleashed both Inoke and Kairi to heal them up with the potions he had on hand. Once the pair were topped off he did the same with Mana and Junpei just for good measure. With that settled he gathered all his pokemon’s attentions, gesturing to them as he inquired their opinions. Mana of course, still looked confused at all the movement; why didn’t he just use words? The other three though seemed to understand and agree with their stern responses. Junpei seemed to translate to Mana what Sullivan was inquiring and the little Rowlett… continued to look unimpressed. Well…. Three out of four wasn’t bad.

With his team fully healed and (mostly) on his side in regards to trying the Totem Challenge, Sullivan was up and moving to start. He’d returned everyone save Mana and Junpei (who was very rarely if ever in ball anyways) and headed for the opening of the cave. He was certain he’d seen a sign or something indicating the starting area for the challenge or the route up to it… and sure enough he found it after a bit of looking. Verdant Cavern might’ve not been very big but well… dang, things were easily hidden.
Sullivan took a deep breath, glancing to Junpei and Mana (who was catching a ride on his back as always). The Rockruff met his gaze and gave bark in assurance, Mana looking off to the side clearly disinterested once more with what was going on. Her apathy was a bit concerning to Sullivan, but maybe it would just take a bit of getting used to before she became one with the team. With at least mild support shown, he moved his way down the path towards the trial area. It was rather secluded, with a single stream of light hitting in the center of an open area up above. Sullivan stopped and frowned at the emptiness, looking around. It was kind of quiet… did he need to do something?
Suddenly the ground underneath his blades shook enough to send him rolling backwards a bit. Sullivan yelped and caught himself, Junpei immediately going into a defensive stance as a rather larger than normal Gumshoos jumped down from a hidden ledge up above and into the light, staring the challengers down as it stood to its full height. Wow that… that was not quite what Sullivan was expecting when it came to a Totem Pokemon. He’d heard rumors but well… seeing was believing. Taking a moment to recover, he rolled himself back into place, standing tall and ready to battle. Right then, on with the show it was.

Congratulations, Sullivan has completed the 1st Trial!
It took a moment for Sullivan’s remaining senses to catch up to all that had just occurred, a heavy sigh escaping his lips as he allowed the tension to somewhat fade. He was still crouching next to Junpei, having had to retrieve the poor Rockruff from battle when he’d jumped in to try and assist after Mana went down. He really hadn’t expected the Gumshoos to be so strong; they weren’t normally and even if this one had been specifically trained, he didn’t think it would be outrageously strong.
Still though, Mana had gone down without much of a chance with Junpei following and Sullivan had to resort to Inoke to finish the job and even the Braviary had risked some trouble. He felt a nuzzling at his hand though and looked down to see the Rockruff was up and responding now, though still seemed a little dazed. In a panic, Sullivan signed in question if the rock puppy was okay, the creature’s tail wagging as he gave a bark. The blue-haired man gave a pained smile but nodded some, rubbing the pup between the ears. He was happy, at least, that Junpei was up but he really needed to get to a pokemon center at this point. Glancing over his shoulder he noted that the Gumshoos had fled the scene leaving behind and odd-looking shard in its wake. He frowned and stood, retrieving it and looking it over a moment. He'd never really seen anything like it before; was this his ‘prize’ so to speak?
Either way, he tucked it away and scooped up Junpei who seemed resistant to the idea of being carried. Sullivan didn’t want to risk anymore trouble for the puppy until they’d gotten to the center and so quickly sped his way down the ramps and out the cave heading back for the routes to find his way to the nearest healing spot.

Adder got just inside Verdant Cavern, when he realized what Pan had already been well aware of. He didn't know where the Cosmogs were. He'd... crap, he'd lost them in Hau'oli! Oh man.... Oh man. How could he have been so dumb!? He reached up to grip his hat, his eyes wide as he stared at the ground. Again! This wasn't even the first time! Crap! Crap, crap, cra-- "Cseou!" Adder jumped and tripped over a rock as he spun, falling back, and staring wide eyed at the two pokemon. Wha... what the hell!? Where had they been hid-- his back pack. Oh, god.... they'd been in his backpack still. Abruptly, there was a shock around his wrist, and he jerked back from meeting 2's gaze, to glare down at Cling. Fudge... He'd forgotten about that thing. He grimaced, glared at the two baby legendaries, and turned. Whatever. He didn't need to deal with them-- he had other things to focus on.

Namely, Adder needed to focus on the... "gym" battle. Or whatever you called it, when it happened in a cave. Not to mention the trials. He planned on taking them both on, but he wanted to get through them quickly. He'd spent a lot more time in other regions than he'd intended; he had some time to make up for. And once he managed to get up to where he'd been in those regions.... maybe he'd double back, and focus on some pokedex stuff. Trying to keep some eye on the cosmogs still floating around him -- he needed to contact Lunala to find a way to get them back, really -- he moved off, searching to find Ilima, and, upon finding him, challenged him to a battle.

Verdant Cavern was a really pretty place. It was definitely a rocky place, but it was really pretty. She especially liked the holes in the ceiling that let in the sun. After patting off the back of her dress and leggings and shaking the dirt off her bag, Erryn let Bryant lead the way through the cavern. He was looking around with purpose. Maybe he saw something on the map she hadn't seen about Verdant Cavern and wanted to check it out."So, are you still not going to tell us what you want to see here?"The Riolu looked back at her before stopping and pointing ahead. There was a...trainer? Erryn knelt beside Bryant, watching them curiously. They were busy with another trainer, but she couldn't hear what they were saying."Is that trainer special? Do you know...him...?"She honestly couldn't tell whether they were a boy or girl from where she was. Was it rude to just assume like that? Bryant shook his head before grabbing the map from her bag again, opening it to point to the cavern. It stayed in the air just fine, but the impact made it drop whatever it was carrying. Erryn sort of panicked, not sure what to do. Should she try to catch it or should she get out of the way before it hit her or one of her Pokemon on the head?"Lu!"Well, Bryant knew what to do. He didn't hesitate and began moving around the bridge to attempt to catch the falling object. He sure seemed to know what it was; or, at least, have a good idea. Thankfully, he did manage to catch it and Erryn leaned down to look at it."...It looks like an egg? But, it's covered in ice. Aren't eggs supposed to be warmed up?""Not all. It might be an Ice-type.""You just--!"There was no time for that. A few of the flying trainers landed on the bridge, startling Erryn and Farah to the point of making them back up. Bryant did, too, but took an immediate interest in protecting the egg."Be a good girl and give us that egg."Bryant moved next to her, looking at her with a warning glare and she didn't need to be told he didn't think that was a good idea.
