Just as she began to understand the moth’s predicament, No More Grief became aware that they were not alone. At the edge of her vision lurked a shadow, lithe and smoky, with green eyes that glowed in the darkness. It yowled and lunged at her and she felt sharp claws rake her sides as she lunged back. Her teeth clamped down on nothing but thick dark wisps of air and she whirled around to face it again, grimly determined.

Mortal means would not defeat this creature. The Kimeti and the shadow cat paced together in a slow circle while the moth fluttered between them, eyeing each other warily. Finally the cat lunged for the moth and No More Grief dodged in front of it with a high, clear, animal shout that rang through the dark swamp. The cat yowled and melted back into the waters of the swamp.

No More Grief slid back into the water with a sigh, blood streaming from the new wounds as well as the old. The moth perched serenely on a log nearby, waiting for her to come collect it. As she started to fall out of consciousness a warning hiss startled her awake and she stood up again.

“We’re not safe here,” she told the moth with inexplicable conviction. “We should go.” She scooped it up with her tail and it settled comfortably between the scales on her back.

She walked in silence for a long while, listening to the splash of her hooves in the water, alert for the sound of danger. She felt a little silly talking to the moth; even a mysterious Motherfather-sent glowing moth was still, it seemed, just a moth, and not the cleverest of creatures. No More Grief had gone to great lengths to win its trust, but it hadn’t reacted to the clear danger of the shadow cat in the slightest.

As she walked, she thought about this. Every now and again the moth attempted to flutter away, uncertain, and she had to stop often and allow it to lick at her still-drying wounds.

Another stop. She pondered the shadow cat and whether it had wanted the moth or herself.

It didn’t seem to matter. Nothing seemed to matter. No More Grief wasn’t even sure where she was going.

In fact, she wasn’t sure that she was even really walking anymore. Still, she had a definite sensation of covering distance.

Finally, she started recognizing landmarks. She knew this area.

No More Grief deposited the moth in the shelter of a large, hollow tree stump that she often used to cache food. She carefully covered it with branches to hide the glow.

No More Grief slumped gratefully against the stump. She had no idea what to do now. The moth's wing required delicate care, that much was certain. Her own wounds required tending as well. The only kin she had ever heard of who could do such delicate work was the venerable, odd Never Idle. Reluctantly, she stood again. She had never met one of the Matope's chosen, but No More Grief had heard that they often appeared to kin in their time of need.

Limping, she set out again, her wounds throbbing with every step.

There was no sign of Never Idle - or, for that matter, anyone else, but the walk began to clear her head. To heal an injured moth's wing, she would need something to straighten it out, she reasoned.

As she walked she found herself growing more and more tired; the pain grew worse and worse until her vision became a narrow tunnel.

But at the end of the tunnel she saw what she needed: a tree oozing sticky resin, with plenty of insects caught in it already.
