He is a Holocaust survivor, whose experiences in Auschwitz warped his view of humanity.
In X-men First Class he was tormented by Sebastian Shaw as a child during his time in the concentration camp in a misguided attempt to develop his power.
He meets Charles Xavier while making an attempt on Shaw's life.
