Its purpose is to burn away what doesn't work, "The Judgement of the Phoenix" targeting the stagnant and non-evolving. Phoenix's corruption to Dark Phoenix came to be after clouded judgement from human emotion. As Phoenix is life the Dark Phoenix is power and destruction.
