  • Artist Info: I was born in the city of Lancaster, Ohio in 1820. From there I was sent at age sixteen to become a cadet at West Point a school, that introduced me into my military career. After my graduation in 1840, I did my work with the new territories and such, but I had yet to experience war. That of course would come to soon. After I left the army in 1853, I tried several business ventures which all failed. During 1860, after landing a job teaching, I heard of the secession of South Carolina, of which I was living. I could only predict the worst, as for which I left, and decided to do my duty for my country. After getting granted the position of Colonel, I would soon learn about how overconfident we northerners can be, after the first battle of Bull Run. I then learned how to be cautious, to a level where some people might have called me crazy, but there is no such thing as over caution. I finally got to do my part by serving under General Grant, and then leading a successful retreat after the battle of Shiloh.
