History
Stephanie began her crimefighting career as Spoiler, in order to combat her third rate criminal father's schemes. During this time, she ran into Robin (Tim Drake), and Batman (Bruce Wayne). The former took to her much quicker than his mentor, who feared she was an unprepared hero seeking a bit of adventure. At first, this was quite the case, as her motivation after capturing her father was mainly to continue seeing Tim, who she eventually dated, and to seek Batman's valued approval, which she seemed to receive after being trained somewhat by Black Canary, and then Batman himself. She maintained a friendship with Cassandra Cain, the then-current Batgirl. When Tim took a leave of absence from his role as Robin, Bruce granted Stephanie the mantle, though quickly fired her due to her impulsive and emotional ways. In order to prove herself, Steph set into play a 'war games' stratagem, which she executed improperly, causing a massive gang war to erupt in Gotham, and her eventual capture and torment at the hands of Black Mask. It was assumed that she had died, though in truth, Batman's personal physician Leslie Thompkins had brought her to Africa for a time, in order to escape from Gotham until things 'settled down'. Her return was welcomed by Batman and Tim, though her ex boyfriend's trust of both was tarnished after a few realizations, leaving Steph alone and heartbroken. She continued to operate as Spoiler, until her best friend, Cass, left the Batgirl persona following Bruce's disappearance, giving it to Stephanie. In time, Barbara Gordon, the first Batgirl, and now Oracle, warmed to the fact another had taken up her original creation, helping Stephanie personally, and along with Babs' apprentice, Wendy Harris (Proxy), dubbed themselves 'Team Batgirl'. With Bruce's return, Steph has been allowed to maintain the Batgirl identity, having more freedom to operate alone than ever before.
Post Reboot
Following the DCnU's creation, Stephanie Brown does not appear in any canon comics. Yes, it is a monstrous thing, I know, and therefore.....

Still living in the shadow of the Bat, even though her role as Batgirl is considered a step up, Stephanie takes a brief hiatus to focus on her studies and who she really wants to be. After some soul-searching, she decides to return to Gotham as Spoiler once again. Giving up the batsymbol gives her a new chance to make her own name, to break from the stigma it allows the Gotham crime scene to place upon her. She can never stay away, but only time will tell how this newer, stronger Spoiler will fit into the city she's always called home.
