The Flock is a group of children genetically altered with bird DNA. It consists of Max, Fang, Gazzy, Nudge, Iggy, Angel, and, from the end of The Angel Experiment on, Angel's dog Total.
The next group is Itex, an organization of scientists undercover as a business group. It is alleged that they created the Flock through a subdivision known as The School. In book three, their overarching scheme is revealed, showing that they have planned to perfect the world by means known as the "By-Half Plan" or the "Re-Evolution". Max and the Flock's actions in this book lead to the downfall of Itex and many of their companies.
There are also the human-lupine hybrids known as Erasers, used to handle security at the School and control the other experiments. In the third book, the Erasers were "retired" and mechanical alternatives were built, called Flyboys. These more efficient models were similar to the Erasers, and had the ability to fly. A later enemy came with a gun grafted to their arm. He committed suicide at the beginning of Max. More robotic enemy's where introduced in The Final Warning. They were dubbed M-Geeks by Gazzy and Iggy.
CSM, or The Coalition to Stop the Madness, are a group that emerge in book 5, and are led by Max's mother, Dr. Valencia Martinez. Dr. Brigid Dwyer, a character in the fourth book, and Dr. John Abate are also members of this group. CSM organize a series of airshows by the Flock in many polluted countries and citys in an effort to urge action on climate change.
Maximum Ride or 'Max' is fourteen years old but it is often suggested that she looks older than her age. She's the oldest of the avian-human hybrids and the leader of the Flock. Her powers are "warp drive" when flying, and the gills that she and Fang develope in the five book. Physical Appearance: Max has a 13-foot wingspan in the series. Her wings are brown with dark brown topsides, black and white primaries, and brown and white secondaries. Her skin color is light and tanned from being outside so much, and has brown eyes. Her hair is brown with blonde sunstreaks, and in the Angel Experiment, her hair is dyed with pink highlights during a makeover. There is much debate on Max's hair as many different variations are mentioned in the books, but brown with blonde streaks is the most common. Max is tough, sarcastic, and hates "girliness" and showing emotion. In MAX, Max turns down many opportunities in a meeting (in which she wears clothes that "aren't blood splattered, which is the best you can get out of me" wink to become famous such as becoming models, actors, etc. She says she is "worried with herself" when she describes Nudge's hair in a girly way. Max often is annoyed by herself for things like worrying about her appearance, etc. She once recalls how "last year, I would mostly just whack it [hair] off with a knife when it got in my eyes ." She acts as the mother of the Flock, looking out for everyone else, and is generally stubbornly in charge of everything. In the first book Max also obtains a voice in her head. The voice is described as neither male nor female, young nor old. It helps Max out of many sticky situations, and in the third book, it is revieled to be Jeb. But in the fourth book it is suggested that it is someone else too.
Max and Fang: In the books, Max and Fangs relationship' was first suggested in book one, the Angel Experiment, after Max kisses Fang on the beach when she thinks he's dying. In the second book, Max and Fang both develop a relationship with a different person besides each other. They do both seem mildly annoyed with each other at this, and Fang kisses Max's forehead at one point while reassuring her that she won't turn into an Eraser. In the fourth book Fang makes the point, saying that neither of them liked each other being with someone else. Fang kisses Max in the 3rd book, Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, 4th book, The Final Warning, and Max and Fang kiss four times in the 5th book, MAX. In the third and fourth book Max runs off as soon as they kiss, however in The Final Warning Max acknowledges that she is in love with Fang after they kiss, and this horrifies her. In MAX, Max accepts that she loves Fang, but they don't really make a big deal out of it until Max gets ready to go on a possible life or death mission. Then she kisses him for the first time in front of the rest of the flock and the CSM team.
