• Cameron's || Journey
    Chapter oo3

The sun is shining played on the radio as Cameron and Elaine drove home. A smile shone on both their faces. The summer had finally arrived. Cameron’s cell phone buzzed, followed by a quick twinkle of music, alerting her she had a new text message. “It truly is the 21st century, isn’t it?” Elaine looked at her youngest and chuckled. The woman was well into her 50s but still looked as radiant as ever. Cameron giggled and rolled her eyes playfully; her mother was very negative on the matter of letting her daughter have a cell phone. After all, at the time, she was only fourteen! The deal finally came to, if Cameron paid for the phone herself, and had nothing to hide on it, she could keep it. Elaine at times would sneak into her daughters room at night, grab the cell phone, and look at as much as possible, a hand on her chest the entire time, hoping that it would help her not to have a heart attack if she saw something out of place. But she never did. Sure, at times she would question her daughter about some things, but it all checked out. Cameron was smart enough to delete anything that could get her in trouble.

When she flipped open the read Samsung phone, the “1 new message” in orange letters was just as inviting to open as the first time. Oh how easily amused she was.

Hey! Just really fast, do I need to bring anything for tonight?

    -MinMin

That was just like Minnie. Slyly trying to geta clue as to what was going on. Elaine laughed once again as her daughter was replying. “Slow down! It’ll catch fire at that speed.” Cameron didn’t hear her, but hit the send button right as they were pulling into the driveway.

The house had been repainted the previous year in an almost olive green. It looke beautiful. The house was old, but well cared for. The porch its self wasn’t in great shape though. It was concrete, but most of the pain had chipped off from its last coat. Mother and daughter stepped out of the car, and began walking up to the front of their house. Elaine stopped to smell one of her roses. She prided herself on her garden, and spent a lot of her time on it. It wasn’t just a hobby to her, each plant was another one of her children, and the death of one was something the entire family dreaded having to deal with.

“Dad is home early.” Pointed out Cameron, though it was more of a question.. Her mother stuck her tongue out mischievously. “He wants to make dinner for you and your friends. Steak I think.”

    “Mom, Minay is a vegetarian.”

“We know dear. We’ve known for years. Why does she go by Minay anyway? Mendelian is such a beautiful name!” The read head walked back over to the car and pulled groceries out of the back seat. Her kindergarten class had gotten out a few hours early, so she had time to go shopping.

“I don’t know. She went by Mendy for a while, but didn’t like it. I think she’s done changing it though. I mean, I don’t think I can handle another name in her lifetime.” Cameron jogged up to her mother to help her carry the heavy bags.

“Thank you Dear. Yea, I think I’m done trying to remember all her phases. But that’s just me. She’s stuck with Minay for the rest of her life. Until she decidews to go back to Mendelian of course.” She wrinkled her nose playfully, and the two disappeared into the house.

The day passed quickly, and Cameron was getting the last details ready as Caleb stepped quietly through the door. He didn’t bother knocking, he never had. He pushed his black Converse off and slid around the wood floor. Cameron heard him say we was here from the living room and ran to say hello. She tripped, managing to throw her arms around him, pulling him down with her. They were both on the ground, a laughing mess, when David walked in. He had two flowery oven-mits on, as well as his wife’s apron. This caused the two teens to explode into further laughter, leaving David looking confused. His blue eyes were full of life. “Nice- Nice apron dad.” Cameron managed to choke out through her tears of laughter. She fell back onto the ground. Why were they laughing? Who knows, but it sure was funny. The short man had no witty reply, so he simply walked back to the kitchen to continue his cooking.

“What’s going on?” Minay was still half way through the door, possibly considering walking back out. “Are you kids being good?” She was such a teaser, and Caleb got it more than Cameron did. Minay’s yellow dress flowed back and forth as she pushed the door closed with her foot and kicked her shoes off into the pile with everyone elses.

“Dinner is ready! We’ll just have to start without- Oh hey Minnie. Glad you made it.” Elaine kissed her “second daughter” on the cheek and led them all into the dining room. It had taken some effort to pull themselves from the floor, sides splitting.

All of them began eating. From the outside you’d think they were all a family. The inside was just that. “So Caleb, how’s home life?” David asked as he sprinkled cilantro on his steak.

“Oh, its been ok. Dad decided to blow the last paycheck though.” Caleb’s father was an addictive gambler. A good man who didn’t know when enough was enough. Luckily, he knew to stay away from things that could endanger his family- physically.

Everyone was used to hearing Caleb’s home life. From the tone of his voice everything sounded ok, so no one was too concerned. Elaine was silent for a moment though. It always upset her, Caleb’s family life, and she often times helped Jessica, his mother, with groceries. Minay cut in, helping to break the silence. “Can someone pass me that yummy baguette bread? I love it so much.” She leaned half way across the table, not giving anyone time to help her out.

The phone rang. “I’ll get it.” Elaine jumped from her seat and walked into the other room. Everyone at the table was quiet, trying to listen. “Why won’t she talk louder?” Minay hissed jokingly. Well- half jokingly. David snorted a laugh, which sent the entire table into giggles. “David, please come here.” Elaine was no longer on the phone, and was peeking her head around the corner, motioning to her husband. She had a troubled expression.

Again the table fell silent as they looked earnestly towards the adults in the kitchen speaking in hushed tones. David of course noticed the4m and slid the door closed. “That’s no good.” Caleb said as he leaned back in his chair. He and Minay spoke to each other, but Cameron tuned them out. What could be wrong? A death? Job Trouble? Finances? Her thoughts were interrupted by the doorbell’s old ring. “I bet it’s the bullies!” Minay said as if telling a ghost story. She waved her fingers for affect. “Shut up.” Caleb pushed her her chair back with his foot and stood up. Cameron smiled at her two best friends as she walked over the door and opened it. Her smiled was cut short though. “Who is it!” Minnie called from the dining room.

    “Nick . .”

    “Hey Cameron.”

    Descisions:

-Why is Nick at the door?
