Spring, 21st year of Freddie II

The room was a small office. There was an all around bookcase on the wall. There was a large wind on the wall opposite the door. There was a large wooden desk stationed in front of the window. A man sat behind the looked to be in his late teens or early twenty, since his short light brown hair had yet to develop the gray streaks. He had a very pleasing face. His Brown eyes said he knew much of the rough side of the world. He had a scar across his right cheek. He had on semi-nice clothes and he had a very solid build. “What are we going to do?” The man asked, “I mean where could she have gotten to. We only have till the end of the week to find her or we don’t get paid.”

There was a man standing in front of the desk he looked very stressed, like one wrong word to this man would get his tongue cut off or worse. “I have no clue, sir. We followed her, but somehow she managed to escape our forces. We didn’t mean to fail you, sir Kodi.” The pleading man knelt in front of Kodi. He had his head down in hopes that Kodi wouldn’t hit his face.

The anger crept up his face. “You never seem to mean to fail me but you do. If YOU don’t find her by the end of the week we won’t get PAID! Try to support your ‘family’ on that!” Kodi glared at the man in front of him. How can anyone be so mule headed, Kodi thought to himself.

Kodi turned away from the man begging in front of him. Thinking that the man knew enough to leave now, Kodi went back to working on the documents that sat on the desk in front of him. The begging man stood and started for the door. He was trying to pretend that the unpleasant interruption had never happened, when the man turned around to ask one last question. “Sir, how do I capture her?”

Kodi made a disgruntled noise. He had had enough of these people for today. Kodi didn’t even bother to look up he just shouted at the man while looking at the papers. “I don’t care! Use a cage if you must.” The man knew when he had been dismissed and he knew that if he didn’t leave now he might lose his tongue or worse.

Kodi started filling out a form, when a thought crossed his mind, Why go to this much trouble for one girl? His reason was for the money but he could see no other reason. The man who had hired him had claimed it was for money and for love. Kodi had never been in love and thus could not see how this love could be important.

Kodi’s mother had died when he was five, and his father didn’t much care for him, Since Kodi was a younger son and didn’t seem to be doing much good with his life, he was little more than a burden, as of recently his father had been pressuring him to go to court. Kodi had no desire to ever go to court.

Kodi had been working on the papers for quite some time, and had been contemplating the concept of love when there was a knock on the door. “Who is it?” Kodi had absolutely no idea who could possibly be at his door.

A familiar gruff male voice answered “It is I your loyal older brother, Paul. I am here to talk to you on behalf of our honorable father.” Paul had a slight lit in his voice when said honorable father as if it was an inside joke only he got.

Kodi sighed a deep sigh then yelled through the door. “Go away! I have nothing to talk about with our honorable father.” He seemed to say honorable father more to amuse Paul rather then because he believed it. Paul had entered the room while Kodi had been yelling at him. Paul was tall and had a rough look to him though he was only 20. He had his brown hair cut short and had a beard. His clothes hung loosely on him to allow him extra movement. Kodi looked at him and a slight smile crept on to his face, but vanished almost immediately. “Why don’t you ever listen to me when I say go away?”

“Well, brother dear, if I listened when you told me to go away how would I ever get to talk to you?”

“Fine, what does father want now?”

“He told me to tell you that you had better get your head on straight! He
wants you to go to court in two days. He said to tell you he WILL disown you if you don’t go.”

“But, if he disowns me it will hurt the happy little family, he has the king fooled to believe we are.” Kodi replied in a tart voice. “And why does he want me to go to court? I thought he had fooled himself into believing that I don’t exist.”

“I have no clue, but he does seem to be most adamant about it. Maybe it has something to do with the king’s declining health. Or maybe it has to do with the princess that is your age.”

“Yeah, probably but I’m not going to court so it doesn’t matter.”

Paul shook his head at his younger brother. “One day dad will disown you if you keep defying him.” Paul looked thoughtful for a minute, “But you’re probably right he won’t disown you until at least the king dies.” Paul turned toward the door and opened it. Paul looked back at Kodi over the shoulder with a smile, “Hope that your luck keeps up!” With that Paul left. Kodi watched brother leave and shook his head.
