• Gared happily trotted down the grey concrete path in the park. It was his evening
walk that he utilized to rid himself of any stress he worked up while at college. He was a
young man at the age of nineteen. Gared worked at a pawn shop for a side job to supply
at least a fraction of the money he needed for tuition to continue college. His parents who
lived in New Jersey paid the rest of the money. As Gared worked at the pawn shop, he
developed a growing envy for people who brought special items or materialistic items
into his shop for money. Gared has always lived as a low income student, even in high
school when he used to work at Pizza Hut. His hate grew strong for those who were rich.
Now that Gared was halfway through the park, he could see the wonderful sights
of a clear, bright day. These, of course, included dogs dashing by, kids hanging off the
jungle gym, and old men reading newspapers on wooden benches. It was just as any other
ordinary day without a cause or complication. Out of the clear blue sky, Gared picked up
a hollering at what sounded like at the moment, gibberish, due east of his position on the
narrow path. Gared is quite a curious, skeptical guy, so he gently walked towards where
    the gibberish was coming from.
When he peered around the large oak tree, he could see a women decorated
ornately with jewels, a long dark purple dress, heavy eye shadow, and black pulled back
hair with delicate crystals placed all along her hairline. Her appearance made her seem to
be some kind of psychic. She was on the ground sitting on a blue blanket yelling out
words towards certain people who walked by while holding out golden chains. Gared,
now with a confused look etched upon his face, hesitantly approached the woman.
He came up to the edge of her blanket. It took a full four seconds before she
noticed this young man standing before her. She asked,
“What might be your name sonny?
Gared noticed the strange accent she had within her tongue. It was something similar to
that of a combination of Arab and a Portugal accent. He answered her warily saying,
    “Well, my name might be…Gared”
“Gared eh?...How would it do for you if you bought one of my golden chains? It
comes right from the ore of Mississippi.”
    He laughed and said,
    “I only have a Lincoln…Will that do?”
She complied with the offer, and he had left the park 100 grams heavier than what he
    has entered with.
Gared, after a strenuous long walk home, finally arrived at his apartment. The
apartment was located on Lakers Avenue. It was for poor income people and for people
who were practically on welfare wages. Gared tiredly, in a lazy fashion, banged up the
stairs floor by floor. He rustled through his pocket to search for his key once he was at his
apartment door. He felt a shock of nervousness when he couldn’t find it in his right
pocket. However, it was in his left. He jammed the brass key into the lock, twisted it
around and back again, pulled out the key and bashed open the door. He closed the door
and went through to his kitchen. He adjusted his broken, crooked mirror and ejected the bright gold chain out of his back pocket. He put it on and found favor in it when he laid it around his neck. He took it off, and for the rest of the night until 1:00 A.M., he did homework.
The next morning, Gared geared up for Saturday morning work. He slapped and
shoved two slices of day-old Mario’s pizza down his throat, took a cold shower, and
brushed his teeth. He put on the trademark shirt for the pawn shop, a pair of torn kakis,
and jolted out the door. His stolid appearance and lazy posture walked down the sidewalk
towards his destination of which was three miles away.
He crawled up to the doorstep of Pop’s Pawn shop past the window with the
flickering neon open sign, and through the door complementing him on the way in with
the bell sound. His boss rudely barked,
    “You’re late Gared!”
“Same as always Banner! What’s the big deal here.”
“One more late guest appearance like that, and your done with. Got my drift?”
“Sure…Why not?” Gared said in a cocky attitude.
Gared blankly walked to the backroom. His boss yelled,
“Heat up the molder!...We have somebody coming this afternoon with a box of
gold coins used in the eighteen hundreds or something of that sort.”
    Gared said,
    “Alright then.”
Gared turned on the switch for the molder which was basically a heated furnace with a
pot located in it place used to melt metals of all sorts brought to the store from the
customers. Banner screamed out again saying,
“And take off that gold thing of yours off your neck. The last thing we want is for the customers to think we don’t melt the metals and sell it but keep it for ourselves. Well, I’ve got a woman to meet today at this new restaurant down the
street. I’ll be back sometime tonight I guess.”
Gared reluctantly took off the necklace wanting his boss to shut up and leave him alone.
After that, Gared got to work.
The man with the coins came by at about 2:05 P.M. He was an Irishman with red
hairs illuminating off his jaw bones and upper lip. Gared handed over the money for the
coins, and the man went on his way. When he went over to the molder, he realized that
there was an entire mess of dirt on the rock counter where his chain laid silent without a
rattle. He placed the box of coins on a seat near the counter. Then he picked up a dirty
rag, and cleaned the counter. Without noticing it, Gared accidentally pushed his chain
into the box of coins! He picked up the coins and threw them all in the molder including
    his chain.
He looked back at the counter, and realized that his chain was gone. He panicked
and looked all around the room. Then his entire soul swelled with fear as he just realized
that he pushed his chain into the box of coins and now his chain was melting. Gared was
so infuriated and enraged. The golden chain was the only expensive item of his he has
ever owned. He turned wild-eyed. He couldn’t take it and snapped. He charged towards
the furnace, jumped in, and threw his hand into the molten gold. He screamed bloody
murder as he madly digged through the pot while grunting and growling trying to sooth
the pain while his entire arm was being burnt down to the bone.
Gared took out his hand and screamed as hard as he could. Shortly after, he bled
to death and his right arm almost completely disintegrated. Banner came back and found his employee dead lying there without life.
