• Chapter 4: Moments Later and then a Rest Stop

“Ugh…” I grunted as I reached for my head that was pounding with a head ache. What the heck?! I slowly open my eyes to the interior of a vehicle and heavily tinted windows. I heard a voice beside me but it seemed so loud and I covered my ears and squeezed my eyes closed. I felt a cold hand lightly touch mine and I opened my eyes slowly to see Escaray looking at me with concern and holding a glass of red liquid.

“Here, drink this. The pain will leave you soon.” His voice was still very loud and I didn’t move my hand from my ears to take the glass. Then I saw a waterfall, so quiet and graceful, as it fell to the slow river beneath it. It was soothing and I looked around me and saw the jungle wild and untamed with such beauty and then I saw Escaray sitting beside me holding out a glass of red blood, the nectar for my body. I took the glass and began to drink and almost instantly the waterfall drifted away and I was, unfortunately, back in the vehicle holding an empty glass with the blood running back to the bottom of the glass.

“How do you feel my Lady?” I heard him ask.

“Are you going to start calling me that again?” I replied with a smile.

“Although, I am much better. Thanks for your beautiful…scenery.”

“You’re very welcome me Lady. We are currently in route to Lady Shadow’s house hold which is in Greece.”

“I thought vamps came from Romania or Transylvania or someplace like that.”

“Lady Shadow prefers to stray from legends and to travel. She has households all across this Earth and is currently residing in Greece.”

“Oh. Well that must be very nice, being able to see the world and all.” I looked down at my hands.
“So did you actually see that wonderful place that you showed me?”

“Sadly I cannot say that I have but only from the memories of others. Although I do have mine own I am not much of the adventurer. Not like you seem to be.” He chuckled.

“Ah, reading my memories again eh?”

“No, not again. I have not intruded upon your personal thoughts since you asked so nicely for me not to. It was some of the memories that I happened upon before that moment.” He grinned.

“Moments like what?” My voice was a little edgy, I didn’t like the fact that he had been intruding on my thoughts.

“Well when I say happened up I mean while you were asleep for that long while. Your memories and dreams were projected out unconsciously and I was so curious about you.” He looked down like he was ashamed he had done so. “Your life was so wonderful, but yet so sad. At times it was hard for you to bear as your heart grew heavy with sadness and the problems of others, but you made it through. You showed everyone that it you would be ok and if it turned out that you couldn’t do it alone then you had your friends by your side to help lift you up. Your friends, amazing, I wish I had friends like yours, sneaking out on warm nights to go swimming or to just hang out together at a party.” His voice began to crack.

He took a deep breath and regained himself before he looked at me. I could see the mask that he put on just like I had so many times before. Only my closest of friends could tell by my eyes weather something was wrong or not and sometimes even they had trouble reading me. I always described myself like a dictionary, hard to sit and read and full of many different meanings.

We were quite for a long time and time itself seemed to slow as my body grew jittery, aching to run.

“We are making a rest stop at a family friend’s home.” I jumped at the suddenness of his deep voice. So much like liquid, it was graceful and just flowed. I felt my heart suddenly ache. I looked up to see him staring into my eyes. We both looked away as I felt the warmth stretch to my face. The vehicle came to a stop and Escaray opened the door allowing in the soft glow of the moon. It was night already and I hadn’t even noticed. He held out his hand and I lightly grabbed it and stepped out in to the moonlight.

I stood there for a moment letting the moon’s precious light caress my body. It felt so wonderful to be out of that vehicle. What is it by the way? I turned around to see a ’78 Trans Am that was black with the reddish-orange firebird on the hood. It even had the original snowflake rims. I gaped at the beautiful car. The one I’ve always wanted. I ran my hand along the side.

“May I?” I motioned towards the hood. He snapped his fingers and I heard someone move within the car and then the soft click of the hood as it popped up.

    . . .

She closed the hood of the car and looked at me.

“I love your car.” I chuckled and motioned my arm out to her hoping that she would take it so as I could walk her inside. She just looked at me though, kind of like she didn’t know what I was trying to do. Then she moved toward me as if to take it and walked right past me. This girl, Salena, sure did perplex me.

I caught up to her as the door of the mansion opened revealing Oisin.

“Good evening Escaray, Ember.” He sad nodding to both of us as he took his index finger and moved it along his jaw line starting at his ear to his chin and up to his lips and out to me as a sign of respect.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I heard her quickly say so softly.

Oisin looks at her and says, “Well my Lady, in our, race I shall say, it is a sign of respect.” And motioned his finger from his forehead to his chin and out to her.

“And that is?” She was lengthy wasn’t she?

“It is the sign that you have because you are a new fledgling who has been ungifted…” He paused and looked at me “…for the time being.”

He motioned us in where we were fed well at his table with his family of twenty-four. He had one wife, three biological sons, eight biological daughters, and was the sire of seven males and three females. His wife was the sire of two females. One of the biological daughters, Adela, showed Salena to her room where they were to reside together and Loukas, one of the biological sons, showed me to his room that had two beds. I was extremely tired for unknown reasons and fell into a deep sleep not long after I hit the bed.

    . . .

Falling into the bed next to the girl, whose name escapes me, my head hits the pillow and I’m dead to the world within a matter of seconds.

A strange dream I seemed to have though.
