• Chapter 6 Farie Seed

I laid on my bed as soon as we got home from the seamstresses clueless on what to do now I didn’t want to get my hopes up of mother and father allowing me to work. I threw my arms in the air and spread out my fingers. I felt like I was in a cage like a small bird unable to be free. Brother came upstairs with the letter to our parents in hand. “I’m done writing the letter if you want to add anything.”
“Just tell them I miss them.” I rolled over to my side and stretched Kailen left my room and went back downstairs I stood up and closed my door then put on my nightgown then dived onto my bed I wished for silence but only got the rustling of the night life of the city “please I only ask for simple comforts as silence and air.” I rolled off my bed and undid my braids then went to sit by window and watch the shadows moved through the streets with haste I was caught by surprise when a small bird flew onto the window sill it was a bluebird they were supposed to bring luck mother had always said and here of all times I needed it.

I stroked it’s soft azure feathers and hummed a soft tune I had almost forgotten the bird dropped something on the floor and flew off I looked down to see a seed the size of an walnut but it was a odd color blue almost purple it seemed like but that was probably just cause of the lack of light and the little bit of color in the sky left from the sunset I set the seed on the window sill wondering what to do with it I could plant it, but then brother would take it away too, but I had to try.

Quietly, I snuck downstairs and grabbed a cup then went into the backyard. I scooped up as much dirt as I could, in the cup, then hurried upstairs, careful not to wake Kailen. Then went back to my window where the seed lay. on the outside of the window there was a place where one could plant flowers, but the dirt was old and full of dead molds and weeds that had sucked the earth patch dry of nutrients, I dug up a spot in the harden dirt and placed the fresh dirt in along with the seed and went back downstairs for water but tripped over my skirts, nearly falling all the way down the stairs, waking my brother.

Kailen sat at the top of the stairs, I wasn’t sure if he was about to laugh or yell at me, but in stead asked me what I was doing. “I’m getting a glass of water or am I not allowed to do that either?” I struggled to get to my feet, I barley managed to.
“Orla don’t stay up too late, please.” Kailen stood up and went back to his room. I relaxed and walked down the stairs to the kitchen and filled the glass with water, then with a little more grace walked back up the stairs and watered the seed, placed the half empty glass on the night stand, and blew out my candle. I laid awake on my bed for some time before sleep finally took me.

I watched the sun slowly rise above the buildings looking down at spot where the seed lay beneath the soil, it seemed to glow warmly. I stared at it a little longer before getting dressed, in one of my new outfits, and heading downstairs for breakfast. I quietly made scrambled eggs and toast while Kailen moved about the house grabbing this and that, then putting them into his bag, before he finally settled down at the table. I set a plate of eggs and toast in front of Kailen and went back into the kitchen to clean up.

Kailen went to the post office as soon as he finished his breakfast, leaving me with the instructions to not leave the house, or destroy anything while he was away. I went back upstairs to my room and sat by my window again. as I watched my brother move through the streets. The smell of the city was overwhelming in the morning pastries, coffee, smoke and city life filled my nose and made me turn away in disgust I wished for the air of the ranch the wildflowers and pine along with the herbs and vegetables in the summer breeze floating past my window everyday now gone. I looked back to the place where I had planted the seed from the night before. A little sprout stood above the earth by an inch, I jumped in surprised, it usually took a week for even the fastest growing herb in my garden, to be as tall as the spout was in just a few hours. As I sat in my room pondering what to do with the sprout or what if it needed more water, a large bang came from down stairs along with a familiar voice. “Kail ya home?” Drake called from downstairs.

I hesitated for a moment not sure what to do, but then I herd another collision from downstairs. “Oi Kail!” Drake called again. I rushed to the stairs to see him at the bottom staring back up at me. He was a few inches shorter than my brother with shaggy sandy hair he wore a baggy light blue shirt with brown pants that also seemed a little loose. “Hello miss, you’re Orla if I’m not mistaken.” He smiled up at me a big sly smile that seemed almost deceiving.
“And you’re Drake if I’m not mistaken.” I replied trying to keep calm. “My brother isn’t home at the moment you could come back later if you like.” Drake stood at the bottom of the stairs, pretending to think.
“I could come back later, but I’d like to stay here, and keep you company until Kail’s return.” He motioned me to come downstairs and was still hesitant only making it a few steps before stopping. “Unless you would like me to up with you, why don’t you come down?” I slowly made my way down the stairs into the light of kitchen windows, I could hear him say something from underneath his breath but what he said was unclear. I finally made my way next to him at the bottom of the steps. Together we went and sat at the table, with him never taking his eyes off me. I bean to feel insecure, like when I was younger, the kids in the country used to stare at me and call me names; his cheerful, flirty voice interrupted my thoughts “How have you’ve been holding up in the city life?”Drake asked.
    “It’s been okay.” I answered
“That’s good, have you seen the city yet?” his voice gave away his eagerness to hear my answer
    “No not yet.” I said.
“Hmm” he answered pleasantly. “How about when Kail gets back I take you around and show you the city maybe have some tea at a nice little café?” He leaned forward upon the table waiting for a response, drake seemed like a person my brother didn’t trust to be around, but I wanted to see the city.
“I’d love to go but I better know what Kailen says before I decide.” Drake leaned back in disappointment
“But Kail’s just going to say no.” He heaved a deep sigh and stared at the ceiling. “He thinks I’m bad influence on you or something.” Then he perked up in his chair. “Do you think I’m a bad person miss Orla?” His big sly smile returned to his face
“Hard to say, since I’ve only met you, Mister Drake.”
“Mister!” he exclaimed “I’m only seventeen!” his laughter filled the room and I had to laugh with him.
