    The man in the Night

A raindrop brushes Laura’s cheek. The sky looks heavy with clouds and the sun is hidden behind a mountain. The rain begins to fall harder now, sweeping away all of Laura’s worries like a leaf on the wind. But she remembers the snow vividly, and the girl; the boy, too, although he came to them much later. There is still conflict in his little heart, though it has long since been forgotten. He can thank the girl in the snow for that. And she remembers the girl in the snow more than anything. But it started before that time, on a snow-filled night much like that one, four years ago…

If Laura, many years from now, were to close her eyes, she would see the snow drifting down from the darkened sky on the night four years ago. She would hear the footsteps crunching through the newly-fallen snow, heading to the house. She would feel the fear she felt that night as the man and the girl appeared outside the door. She would remember his head turning, and although she couldn’t see his face, she knew he was staring at her. They were the start of her troubles.
