• WHEN GOD MADE YOU

    When God created teachers,
He gave me times to smile,
And also when he sent you
To stay here for a while.
He gave you curls I’d look at
    And dimples I would see
When all is fun and humor
    While you would lecture me.

He gave you thoughts to share us
    As life begins to slide
You taught us there’s no reason
    To run away and hide.
You shared us jokes to laugh at,
    With no one but ourselves
And made us thrive to understand
    The heed of someone else.

You gave us your test papers,
    That almost blew our minds
But knowing that you taught us well
Was all I need to find.
    You gave us endless quizzes
    And nonstop homework, too.
Oh, ma’am, whatever can I do
If I’m not here with you?

You’d lift me up when I break down,
And catch me when I fall
Taught me well how to respond
    To God’s unending call.
You taught me not to falter
    When all the world’s threadbare
To stand up and to notice
    The chances everywhere.

Now this is why God made you
    So I would clearly see
    The river of undying hope
    And possibilities.
And ma’am, I thank you very much
For most have come and gone
We’d like to thank you here today
For all that you have done.
