• In a trench under attack,
The sergeant said to watch out back.
But with the bullets startn' to fly,
It was hard to fight or try.
And with the bombs flyin' and the mortar firing,
It was easy to see that we where all tiring.
And under the sound of pounding rain,
Could be heard the hum of a distant plane.
Then to my right came our tank,
So I crawled slowly to take its flank.
But a grenade exploded and cut my shoulder,
So I painfully rolled behind a boulder.
And out my shoulder blood did spew,
A bloody cemetery was all I could view.
I used to say I have no fear,
But I was afraid I would die right here.
I jumped up with my head spinning,
And then I saw we where winning,
I grabbed my gun and started running,
The sights I saw where rather stunning.
The Germans must be in disgrace,
Their dead men all over the place.
I hid behind a cedar tree,
To keep them from shooting me.
Then to the left I saw a Kraut,
To me he seemed awfully stout.
So I carfully took my aim,
But out of nowhere, another came.
He was skinny and rather tall,
Slowly he crouched behind a wall.
And now I thought here comes some more,
Now the total amounted to four.
I saw the men where planning to stay,
So I decided to use a grenade.
I pulled one off my sweaty chest,
Throwing these is what I do best.
I pulled the pin and let it fly,
It hit a man who let out a cry.
A flash of light, a mighty roar,
I wasn't ready for what was in store.
Among the rubble, guts, and gore,
Lay four dead soldiers and then some more.
Two other soldiers lay sprawled on the ground,
Their uniforms bloody, soiled, and browned.
Then ot the right, a thunderous clank,
From the trail of a US tank.
And in the commotion I didn't see,
The German officer aiming at me.
With a flash and a starling crack,
My entire head went pitch black.
As I lay there ready to die,
I couldn't help myself and starded to cry,
    You see for a boy who's 21,
    Your life has only begun.
You find yourself your only friend,
As I thought of my death bed,
    I didn't realize that I was....... dead.
