Pillow Talk and Smiles
“We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.” –Chuck Palahniuk
Each morning the sun floods through my window pane
waking me from my soft slumber,
illuminating your spot at the table, reflecting your smile-
as you wait for me to open my eyes.
You don’t talk, just smile,
as I go about getting ready
but you never have to say anything
because your smile gives it all way.
My day is long and slow
so I think of you back home waiting for me,
watching your garden as you always do
I wish I was there, helping you collect the sweet strawberries.
At dinner you face away from me, still staring out the window, smiling
at night I look over the top of my pillow, at your patient face
I tell you how much I love you, wish you sweet dreams
I blow you a kiss. I close my eyes.
Sometimes at night I wake up crying-
it’s normal for me now
I just sit and stare into space
until I fall back into sleep, maybe
I’m not the type of person that smiles much,
because I don’t have a reason to smile
not since the funeral
I guess that’s the price for being immortal.
