• Here comes the story of wandering John,
And all the folks that he proved wrong.
They say his father was a no good man.
But he raised John with a loving hand.
But his father was a gambler and a drunk.
And then one day he ran out of luck.

Mama said son, papa's dead and gone,
Sent to his grave by a smoking gun.
The best thing for us to do,
    Is forget.

But Johnny said no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
    I won't forget.
I will live the life I'm meant.
So he set off in a pair of road worn shoes.
To see the world and sing the blues.
People would say that he would come to no good.
That's one thing he never understood.

He said I'm not a thief and I'm not a bum.
I'm just a traveler in the setting sun.
Gonna see the world on the back,
    Of my thumb.

    And see it he did.
He traveled all over this great land.
until one day he met a man.
He must have been about ninety-nine.
And he told John what was on his mind.
He said son, I may owe an awful lot of debts.
But I don't owe nobody no regrets.
I've seen the world in a pair of road worn shoes.
And by the looks of things, you have too.
But I think that you've got a mother somewhere.
And I think its time you went back there.

So John went around and went on down,
Going back to his home town.
    Right until he found,
    His ma.

Ma, he said, I'm finally back.
And I've found the place that's not on any map.
    It's a place called love.
    Love.
    Prettier than the morning dove.
So they set off in four road worn shoes.
And next time you're wandering you might see them too.
And next time you're wandering you might see them too.
