• The Maiden and her Knight
    February 16, 2018

    There once was a maiden,
    who lived far away.
    Locked up in a tower,
    for most of her days.
    She sang and she sang,
    love's sorrowful song
    in search of someone
    mighty and strong.

    'Twas the weak
    who fell under her spell.
    The ugly and mean
    never treated her well.
    Then, came the day,
    she set herself free.
    Jumped from the tower,
    into the leaves.

    She fell and she fell,
    into a deep hole.
    This trap was set,
    to dampen her soul.
    Along came a knight,
    so strong and so tall.
    He threw her a rope,
so she could scale the hole's wall.

    Tired and broken,
    the maiden finally stood tall
    to show off to anyone
    to one, and to all.

    Her journey began,
with this knight by her side.
    The one person in life,
    that she could confide.
    The two traveled,
    the journey was hard,
    and when she felt weak,
    the knight carried his ward.

    One hot day,
    after many moons together,
    they lay on a bed
    made of soft feathers.
    It was this moment when
he said he loved her so much,
    she loved him, too,
    ever more with each touch.

    The years went on,
    and the two finally wed.
    Their happiness was short.
    She ended up dead.
At the hands of the king.
    This maiden,
    her beauty was fair.
    Rivaled the queen,
of which no one would dare.

    Broken and bereft,
    the knight buried his wife.
    The one he loved,
    the light of his life.
    Begging the gods
    to end his strife.
"Kill me, too!" he said every day
    not eating, not sleeping,
    withering away.

    When the gods denied him,
    this one final wish,
    he traveled to the kingdom,
    into a rat's nest.
It was there he found the man,
    to finish the deed,
    gave him the money.
    The dead had no need.
    Per his request,
    the bandit buried him beside
the mound for his love on a hilltop of green.
    Together forever,
    both would reside.
