What is this?

We regularly have user-created themes in Runway and often users are confused about what the originator of the theme meant by their description. This thread is for the creators of the upcoming themes to have a chance to post their explanations of their themes for other users to get some insight when creating their entries if they so choose.

This is not required for creators to post an explanation, nor is it required that entrants follow exactly what was intended since the themes are, as always, up for interpretation. This also means that just because someone didn't follow exactly as a user describes it does not mean they are off-theme as users are not required to read these explanations before creating their entry. However, this is a resource for those that do want to know the details more than our system currently allows.

Rules

  • Only theme creators may post in this thread and only post the day their theme shows up in "Enter & Win!". You may only post a short description* of what your intentions for the theme was. The point of this is to help people wanting to create entries for this theme so you may include links or examples, but all images/links used MUST following Gaia's ToS.

  • The post should be informational. Please keep any salt, complaints, or commentary about past themes, changes to the theme, potential entries, etc in the appropriate topics elsewhere. Posts that do not follow this rule may be removed as spam.

  • There should be no more than 3 posts per day (1 for each user-created theme) This will keep everything organized so that users looking to find a description for a theme will know they can find what they're looking for in the most recent posts.

  • Any questions, discussions or opinions about a specific theme, either from the theme creator or other users, should be done in a new thread or appropriate thread in the forum. Please keep the forum rules and Gaia's ToS in mind when creating a thread regarding these topics.

  • What if more than 1 user believes they were the one that created the theme? This may happen, sometimes there are repeated themes in the suggestion thread where multiple people have the same idea. Since we do not announce who suggested the theme until afterward and often a theme is picked that several people have suggested this may happen from time to time. For now, if you believe your theme was picked (we tend to use almost exact descriptions so you should be able to tell easily if it was your idea or not) go ahead and post even if another user thought their idea was the one chose. If this becomes an issue we will change this as needed.

  • Do not post for someone else. Even if you know what a user meant by their description, please do not post for them to prevent any misunderstandings/misdirections with the intention of the theme. You can always contact a user to let them know they can post in here when their theme is used but you should not post for them.

* short description meaning let's aim for a paragraph or two and not a novel.

        Theme :: Relaxing Place
"Show us where your avatar feels most at home. (No Scenics!)"

Lol, this is kind of self-explanatory I feel, but I really wanted to make this post to present other options? Clearly one of the most obvious interps is to sit at a literal home, which is fine, but there's also a bunch of other places to take it as well!
Got a fighter character? Maybe she feels most at home in the ring!
Sailor? Shove that man on a boat!
        Bookworm? Library?!
The possibilities are endless, just so long as your character/avatar is happy where they are uwu
Bonus Note that there's also more abstract places to take this as well. Such as "x feels happiest when they're with y" or "when surrounded by people or puppies or or or"
My original intention was to have fun with it and not exactly be, well, locked into a room as it were.

I went back and forth on posting this for a bit so I hope it's a good explanation sdfghjk
Also a general thank you for opening this thread + 3+ 9

for the scene building theme i suggested that's in gold tomorrow::
- it's just meant to be a build-a-scenic theme where people could use non-bg items to build their own scenic and i wanted to make it also accessible to everyone, so chose to use simple bgs as a necessary equip (bc they can be purchased from the gold shops)
- you can even use chairs, tables, and other stuff like that as long as it's not a full/partial bg
- companions too, or things like that, and also it doesn't have to be a scenic either lol, you can also create an avatar and then build a scene around them the same way i described above
and by partial bg i meant bgs that take up like half or more of the space, so that rug thing from christmas and stuff from uhh the smashing cities item would be fine or other smaller decorative things like that, dw o:

Theme: Once Upon a Mask

This is NOT intended to be a Cosplay theme.

If you've not seen the Masked Singer, any country, the participants are in elaborate costumes to hide their identities, and then they sing on stage. The costumes range from various Monsters and all-white vaguely demonic-looking Unicorn, to steampunk Fox and various fruit or food-themed creatures. It's aired in 11 different countries, and since each season has a good number of contestants, there are a plethora of costumes to take inspiration from. They do not generally show the contestant's actual skin or hair at all, to minimize clues.

TL;DR - Pick a "mask", dress up however, be creative, and then add stage components.

Theme: Far Beyond
Description: Create an original monochrome look based on the sci-fi illustrations of Virgil Finlay. (No Set Use!)

FAQ: I think its pretty self explanatory, do a Virgil Finaly inspired look in monochrome (Monochrome referencing the color scheme NOT "one color" as some previous runway confusion has been based on. so black and white yall.
Can be OC in the style or "cosplay" of a work.

Info: some helpful info/links:
Virgil Finlay (July 23, 1914 – January 18, 1971) was an American pulp fantasy, science fiction and horror illustrator. He has been called "part of the pulp magazine history ... one of the foremost contributors of original and imaginative art work for the most memorable science fiction and fantasy publications of our time."[2]]While he worked in a range of media, from gouache to oils, Finlay specialized in, and became famous for, detailed pen-and-ink drawings accomplished with abundant stippling, cross-hatching, and scratchboard techniques. Despite the very labor-intensive and time-consuming nature of his specialty, Finlay created more than 2600 works of graphic art in his 35-year career.[3]

Ham-ha!

I created the "Ham-ha; Using the Paw base, create your own Hamtaro OC!" theme.~

I think it is pretty self-explanatory(?) but I would like to share some Hamtaro images + a video to help inspire anyone who might be creatively-stuck or confused.

The theme asks that you make your own Hamtaro original character.

Hamtaro characters are pretty naked ( lol ) but!! many do wear cute accessories!

Skirts~!

Alright so for this you can use any skirt you want. It can be a full leg mod, but it just needs to have a skirt of some kind attached to it. And female bases are not required, if you wanna show off your manly kilts or anything like that, go ahead.

Legion Rejects.

The Legion of Superheroes has open tryouts periodically for new members. Most applicants wash out. Because they kind of suck. So, create a superhero who sucks, for whatever reason.

Tournament of Roses II
Create a GiJinka representation of a Rose of any colour or type. (No Background! No Foreground! No Frame!)

The challenge for this is supposed to be in just using the avatar base or " just the avatar" without the help from any kind of background/foreground/frames. The GiJinka should stand alone and display it's " Rosiness " by itself.

Good Rat-titude
Start Year of the Rat with Rat-tastic (or Mouse-nificent) style! (Scenics allowed, being a rat/mouse optional)

"being a rat/mouse optional" is meant to imply that being a rat/mouse/anthro is not the only way to compete in this challenge, designing a rodent based scenic or outfit/gijinka is good too! Of course being a critter is very much an option.

Item example: Mousy Miss as pictured on the left is an example of mouse fashion

Name of Theme: Nintendo's Player 2s
Theme Description: Move over, Mario! So long, Link! Have your avatar cosplay a side character from one of Nintendo's franchises, or any character from Nintendo's lesser known series.

Back when this theme first ran after suggesting it, I did create a discussion thread about it, where I also outlined my views on what series count as well known enough to disqualify their main characters, what I felt were gray areas, and listed some other lesser known series one could look into if they wanted to try something really different. The whole Bowsette thing at the beginning of the opening post might be a little dated now but it was necessary at the time the theme first ran, though considering Gaia's userbase it still might be a little necessary even now *shrug emoji*

I do think I could update a few things based on some big game releases that have happened between my posting of the thread and now, which I'll also edit into the first post of the thread:
  • Pokémon: With the release of Sword/Shield, the character from the games that count as main characters from the criteria I outlined in the thread would be Gloria/Victor as the player character; Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble and their evolutions; Hop, Marnie, and Bede as rival trainers; Chairman Rose as a villainous team leader equivalent. Even though I didn't include champions as necessarily being main characters, Leon has a significantly greater presence in the games than champions from previous gens, and arguably could also count as a main character. Even though they are rival trainers, Klara and Avery from the upcoming Isle of Armor DLC expansion don't really count as main characters because they are not in the main games outside of a small scene that was patched in, and the DLC hasn't even been released at the time of posting.
  • Fire Emblem: Byleth's recent inclusion in Smash Bros. on top of their status of being a main character of Three Houses puts them in the same sort of gray area for this theme as Marth, Robin, Chrom, Lucina, and Corrin.

This was my suggested theme!

There are many different variations of the iconic Clue characters!

Without directly cosplaying a specific look of a Clue character, you should try and add your own spin to one of these characters!

Depict Miss Scarlet or Professor Plum in your own way!

I can't wait to see where creativity takes you!

Thrift Shop Challenge
Only got twenty dollars in your pocket? Show us how you can still put together a beautiful outfit with only clothes from the gold shops! Feel free to use whatever hair, face, and background stuff you want! (No arm/leg/head mods!)

Pretty self-explanatory overall, but just in case: the "outfit" part is referring to just the clothes/hats/accessories/etc, so feel free to make the actual base look however you want, go wild on the hair extensions, make-up, layer those backgrounds, anything you want - the point is to make a good-looking avatar that wouldn't look out of place in any other theme, but do it using only gold shop clothing!

I decided to exclude arm/leg mods because they're either attached to clothes (and therefore non-gold-shop clothes), or fully bare which kind of defeats the purpose of building the outfit if your avatar is half-naked; since it's essentially a blanket ban though, that means the arm and leg mods in the Treehouse are also excluded, even though the Treehouse is technically a gold shop and any other items from it are definitely alright!
And a little note for the mods if they decide to check for off-themes: hand and feet mods are not arm/leg mods, if people want to use shoes like Fabulous Pumps or Hiking Boots which change the shape of the feet, or even hand mods like Dainty Hands and Manhandlers which are just bare hands, that's fine by me.

Also, Loyal's Bazaar does not count as a gold shop. Yes, the stuff in there is sold for gold/plat, but since it's all recolours of cash items, for the purpose of this theme, they're out.
