I can''t stand hearing about religion from (mostly Christian) zealots who are intent on recruiting you for conversion. They seem so blind to arguements against their religious beliefs and that only compounds my frustration with them... so please allow me to explain why proselytisation, conversion efforts, or the free exercise of the Great Commission shouldn''t be allowed on Gaia or anywhere else.

1. Jesus, as well as Leviticus 19, both contain a teaching known as the Golden Rule (or the Ethic of Reciprocity.) This states "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." In this light, should it be acceptable for Muslim, Buddhist, or atheist preachers to attempt to convert you?

2. The motivation behind any conversion attempt is a presupposition that yer own religious opinion is The Truth, and that the opinion of the other fellow must necessarily be wrong. To act in a manner that dismisses the other fellow''s viewpoints out of hand is inflammatory and can be considered Trolling.

3. Even given the above, if we were to allow them to engage in this activity, we would have to allow it for all religions. This would include religions inimical to your own, such as Islam, Asatru, Wicca, atheism, and heck I''ll throw in Jedi for good measure; but it would also include that category of sects you call "Dangerous Cults."

But how can we judge whether any given sect is a reasonable religion, or a Dangerous Cult? We can''t; therefore, we disallow conversion activities as practiced by *any* and everyone.

Now, what you are allowed to do is to debate theological points in the discussion forums, most notably Morality & Religion. Discussion of such topics is fine, and the Proverbial advice "Come, let us reason together" can certainly lead to the soul-winning you would attempt; but outright preaching is right out.

God is a troll.

Thank you, good night. *gets struck by lightning*

Yup, so true. Trying to convert everyone. I tried reasoning with this girl who was trying to convert me and my first question was: "How can you believe in that crap?" (Sorry if anybody is a christian, but that's exactly what I said). She answered by saying hesitantly, "I didn't believe in it at first... but then I slowly did." Riiiiiight. confused Well I couldn't see things from her perspective, blindly believing in something that might not exist. I'm more sceptical, which is why in the battle between religion and science, I choose science - the logical choice.
I have two family members who belong to the Falun Dafa cult (or sect, or whatever the heck crap of a denomination they call themselves).

I confronted and shamed her the other day on a three-way speakerphone call with lots of other family members on the line. I said, "... we're all family, why do you keep trying to convert us? I'm Catholic, I don't advertise that. are Christians, no recruiting ever came out of their mouths. are Buddists and are Atheists. They never rant about their philosophies. Show some respect and keep religion off the table..."

I'm the mean one in my family. twisted

haha 3nodding not neccesarily sure what the falun dafa cult is but really religion... don't care. but anyway cults are dangerous when you start preaching things that is along the lines of "the government is the agent of the devil we must stand agains them." or "Beware of those who blah blah blah" oops lost track of thought hehe sweatdrop anyways i asked a friend how she could actually belive this stuff expecially there isn't that much logic or evidence in it (in my opinion) aside from witnesses on crack (in my opinion) and she said that the point of faith is to be able to belive even though there is no solid evidence. I suppose there's some logic in that. and some thing that confuses me about the bible. If one of god's 10 commandments was "thou shalt not kill" then why did he order all the christians to kill the "heathens" in the holy land? either someone's been lying or that commandments should be written to say "thou shalt not kill unless thou kills a non-christian."
And I think that faith is part of religion. But so is fear. Like the fear of going to hell instead of heaven. which makes me think. There are alot of people in the world and alot of them are christians. Is heaven really big enough to hold every body? eek well that's my 2 cents worth (okay maybe 1/2 a cent lol. )

Hehe... well I've always had a problem with the definition of heaven. Say someone who enters heaven considers food and sex to be the two most important things in his life.

For him to have a heavenly-supply of Viagara and to have sex with as many women as he likes... what sort of heaven is that for the girls?

Also for that person to have a heavenly-buffet of the best foods, how about the food items? The animals being served on a silver platter. (Animals not going to heaven is another debate altogether.)

But the my main question is, what if someone's heaven happens to be someone elses hell? Isn't that contradictory? Isn't there a problem with having evil in heaven?

Perhaps I need to think of things differently... but yeah... there's my 1/2 cents in addition of yalie5's on the topic. sweatdrop

haha lol. People depict heaven sometimes as cotton candy clouds and angels playing the harp. But in this one book I read "lovely Bones" the main character who is in heaven said that everybody had their own version of heaven. And the only reason that there were other people in heaven was because their heave just happened to be similar to hers. That's a very intresting way of putting it. And it's pretty well thought out. But yeah everything in the world is contradictory. it's like the saying "do as I say but not as I do" which not a very good saying. It pretty much means there's a double standard. One for me and one for everyone else lol. Plus. I forgot to put this in the last post. All religions are pretty similar. Well it's similar regarding the after life. It's the do good things and you go to a happy place. Do bad things and you go to an unhappy place. And they're basically preaching to be kind to others and do kind things. Except for the Romans and greek. Apparantly in their religions you all went to the same place whether or not you were good unless you were a warrior or something. So my point is since all religions have basically the same principles why do we have to choose one? Why are there people so admantly trying to convert people from other religions to theirs (unless i'm using the word admantly incorrectly) when it's pretty much the same thing? That is what sometimes makes me laugh and sometimes makes me wonder on the logic of these people. mrgreen

Many people are religious mainly due to that fear of death I guess. They may feel that if they follow a religion then theirs might be the one that was 'correct', meaning they'd get a good afterlife. The thing about christianity that ticks me off is that many of it's teachings are contradictory. Like if you were a serial killer but then repented, wouldn't god have to let you into heaven, just because he loves every single human being and is willing to forgive?
The whole concept of heaven also really screws with my mind, as you guys have already pointed out. Do you age in heaven? What do you do in heaven? Is heaven like a planet similar to earth? WTH is it?
The easy answer I came up with was reincarnation. Although how I came to believe in it was a bit stupid really. I had a slight belief in reincarnation due to my parents being buddhist, but I didn't stongly believe in it. Then I watched the chinese comedy - My Flying Wife - starring Sammo Hung lol. sweatdrop Bear with me. For you see, this film flipped my religious world upside down. This film demonstrated how reincarnation, in my mind, was possible. When the people die they go to heaven, which is more like a waiting room, where they wait to be reincarnated. As more children are born in the real world, the waiting souls leave heaven and inhabit the new bodies, their memories of their previous lives erased. The rest of the movie wasn't great, but the bits where reincarnation was shown really did influence me. So that's my 2 pennies lol. surprised

reincarnation makes so much more sense than just going to heaven. And it's not death they're afraid of. It's what comes after. I mean if every one knew what was on the other side who would be afraid to die? And "my flying wife?" intresting. And yes christian teachings are contradictory and will make my head spin but they way they use their contradictory teachings to influence history is amazing.

... then just steal all the plugs so they can't plug it in XD

Then they'd just simple unseal them. Cutting their power would be more longer lasting but dangerous too..

steal their phone and electric bill so you don't have to cut their power and they can't call the electric company about not getting their bill xp

damn... well the next time they tell you turn down your music you say "What music? I don't have any turned on." and if they keep coming turn it up louder and if they call the cops on you say "I'll turn my music down when they turn down theirs," xp

The civial apporach.. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't call the cops since they're already in enought trouble.
I have a feeling we're not going to stop with the music either way.
