Pushing through the doors to the Sly Toad, Tradak finished the quiet prayer that he had been offering to Kord. It was something he did every time he entered the tavern, as he had been in his share of drunken brawls, and he always made sure that the god of battle was praised before he fought for the glory of Kord.

Looking around the bar, he spotted the scene with the tiefling and Granthrim, and couldn't help but smile. Tradak had experience with tiefling wanderers before, and watching Old Irongut stumble around her was a sight to see.
Looking back, he noticed the eladrin, and wondered at his presence. It had been quite some time since he last saw an eladrin, and it still struck him off kilter even now.

Sitting down at a table near the door, he raised his hand to Mia and smiled, the light flashing off of the holy symbol that adorned the rounded tip of his left ear, and called, "The Drifter Draft, and some of your time, Mia. We never got to finish our conversation last week."

"Th...the Drifters Draft and Venison steak are tonight's specialties. I'll get you some right away." Granthrim said, never so pale in his life. As if to accommodate the sly woman's words the a thunderbolt boomed outside and the rain began to pout down even harder.

"Heavens help the people in Col Fen." Said Bernice, the other waitress as she looked out the door at the pouring rain, "What with the rumors and all, and now this."

Depair's eyes gleam as she hears this news. "Ma'am, what rumors? I have just traveled here you see, to meet--" She stops mid-sentence, and does not finish it, "I ask you, dear maid, what is the matter? I hope to be able to help in the resolution."

Despair looks about the tavern again, waiting for whomever she is to meet, but not quite saying so. She sees the eladrin in the corner, and also the half-elf that slides through the door as she asks.

She looks about the tavern, hoping not to be overheard by anyone else.

The bar goes quiet, even Granthrim stops what he's doing. He gives a stern look at Bernice and speaks, both to curious adventurers, and terrified townsfolk.

"People have been goin missing in Col Fen. In th' middle o' th' night things come and take people away. Th' townsfolk only ever see shadows and hear screams every once in a while but 're to scared to do nutin'."

As if to add a dramatic flair to his story a the room went bright white and there was dead silence, and then a terrible blast of thunder struck the small roadside inn so hard it made the walls rock, and the wind howled louder still.

Despair looks about the tavern, hating that all are looking at her. She was hoping to be inconspicuous for a period, but her presence and questioning have made her very visible.

She curses in Giant and looks to the dwarf, "Any ideas who or what it might be?" Despair looks to Granthrim, hoping for some gossip, anything to help her in the right direction. "I'm also looking for someone, I saw the declaration and was to meet here, do you know who I might be looking for?

(Sorry for the lack of replies, I thought this was dead! Silly Gaia notifications)

Lars' pointed ears almost seem to p***k up at the news of the disappearances. His eyes peer out at the Tiefling, evaluating her. He doubts she is harmful. He looks around the room at the others, all staring at her spitefully.
'Fools' he thinks to himself. 'As if horns alone make a person evil...'
He stands up, seeming to float off his chair, and says in a low but strangely audible voice
"If there are such mysterious and frightening kidnappings going on here...is it really safe for me to stay? Who's been taken? Have there been any tracks left behind?"

Despair's ear perks, she turns to the eladrin, someone she had seen farther back, in the dim lights of the tavern and then to the dwarf again. "Yes, please, are there tracks? Who has been taken?" Despair looks at both the dwarf and the eladrin curiously.

"Who are you dear sir?" Despair looks to the eladrin, trying to see if he is a friend, "Are you who I am to meet here?"

"Ah, sir, not that I know of. Now I wonder if this was all some sort of ruse, to get adventurers here to fix what has happened here. Call out for brave adventurers, and they will come, then they feel obligated, after making the trek here to find out the problem and fix it. As you can see, this is not a normal area for me to inhabit." Her hand moves at herself as she states 'me', "Thank you for your time, I am sorry that I have used some of it up trying to find something that might not even be true or in the worst possibility a trap." Despair looks outside, and realizes that leaving now in this weather would be pointless.

She curses in Giant again, and she starts off speaking softly as if to herself,"and I can't leave in this downpour, I'd maybe make it to the edge of town, but there are few inns that would take me in!" By the last section of the sentence, her words come out in aloud, exasperated tone, and the whole tavern hears her. Her face visibly is shaken, and she turns back to the bar, trying to close herself off from everyone.

"We're technically an inn, if you like miss. I can have your food delivered to your room, but I'm afraid I have only one available so I can't cater to everyone here." Granthrim said referring to the Eladrin, The Tiefling, the Half-elf, and the man with the sword.

By this time the remaining members of the bar had quietly diverted their gaze from the travelers, hoping not to be involved.

"I'll go then. Seems like fun." the man with the sword said getting up. Out of the shadows he appeared to be in his mid-twenties, and he was human. He wore thick leather armor with a dark brown cloak cape. numerous belts and baubles hung around his person.

"Now? Are ya daft?" Granthrim said in disbelief. "The rain'll strip the flesh off yer bones!"

The man smirked and from the satchel under his cloak hopped a yellow frog-like creature. it was maybe six inches tall and wore a small red yarn poncho. It began an odd dance as the man pulled from his satchel a ritual scroll.

"The rain won't affect me, not with this." he said arrogantly. With that his little frog companion croaked a few words in a garbled fey language and the scroll shone brightly. "NO! NOT YET!" the man cried.

As the bright light died down the man angrily stuffed the frog back into his satchel and tossed the now useless scroll over his shoulder before walking out the door, cursing a bit under his breath.

The used ritual scroll now lay in the center of the floor, who knows what spell it cast.

"Wait, who are you?" Despair said, realizing only a bit too late, that this might be the man taking people from the town. She grabs onto the rod that was tied to her side, waiting for a fight, and asks again, "Are you the person I am to meet here? If so, then I expect some answers." She peers down at the scroll, hoping to see that the spell was harmless, maybe thinking that there might be some information left on it. There is no way she will touch it though.

Despair readies herself, fearing for the worst, knowing that taverns, even though they should be peaceful and innocuous are never so.

With the man having left off into the storm the Scroll lies on the floor uselessly. An Arcana check from someone trained in it might determine what spell it cast.

OOC: I've got an Arcana skill of 12, I'll roll.
EDIT: 9+12 = 21

Lars walks over to the used scroll, eyeing it cautiously. He kneels down beside it, and holds his hand over it, his eyes going mistier than usual. He attempts to extract any magical remnants left within.

With your knowledge of magic you discover that the scroll had been a Scroll of Endure Elements (Level 2 Ritual). The magic Ritual would have given the user and up to 4 additional people the ability to ignore ambient temperatures between -50 and 140 degree Fahrenheit. It also would have given those bestowed with it immunity to precipitation magical or otherwise (rain, snow, blood, frogs etc) for up to 24 hours.

Since you matched the Hard DC for the level of the Ritual you also know that when the ritual discharged it targeted the most powerful beings in the inn. Including yourself, the cleric, the tiefling and unfortunately Granthrim as well.

You also know that the effects of the ritual are incomplete being that they came from a discharged scroll. They will wear off if those affected by them are not within 15 feet of each other for more than an hour.
