mc2 Daisy smiled slightly and said, "When I do take notes, I use a recorder, but I have almost perfect recall. One of the reasons I could never land a long term relationship. Men don't like it when you can tell them verbatim something they said earlier and use it against them." She forced a laugh, "Anyhow, all my recording devices were taken by Trinity, so you'll have to make do with my memory. I don't like to take written notes: they can be altered too easily."
She shrugged, "I can work with here-say to a point. I have a rough idea of the situation already. I have proof Daedalus is covering something up, which is suspicious enough. With here-say I can spin it as a conspiracy theory report. With something more substantial- even someone proving they have meta-powers would be enough to get a fairly galling report against Daedalus. More I have the more I can do. I already have some things to put Daedalus in hot water with the general public, but if you want them taken down completely in their public image I'm going to need more to work with."
Frowning some she added, "Of course, there is the possibility that the news about metas and Daedalus and the fact of their experimentation on American citizens, even if they are meta, could cause some panic. Besides saving my own hide, it is one of the reasons I haven't released what truth I do know. I don't want people to get in a panic over pure speculation."
Gidget rolled the suit next to a work table and started to rip out several components from it after taking off some panels.
"I'll start from the beginning then. Save any questions for later please. Rewind back about thirteen years, a few days after the meteor shower. Valhalla's power development division, got their hands on meteor fragments that hadn't been exposed to human touch yet. They attempted to see if there was a way to concentrate the radiation within and choose which powers were given. Not having the proper materials at the time, they outsourced the research and development of the process to one of their subsidiary companies. This company stumbled upon being able to create pure meteor radiation into a physical form. The problem was that the meteors only contained so much, barely enough to change the genetic makeup of a mouse. That's when they got creative."
"Meta-humans multiplied the accessible amount of radiation exponentially. So they created a machine to siphon the material out. This killed the meta-human in the process. The machine cost millions of dollars, and a few weeks to develop. They were only able to build one in that time with what manpower they had. One is all a particularly unbalanced executive needed in order to start his rise to infamy. His name was Solidad Moreno, but we knew him as Leviathan Cortez. Are you following me so far?" |

The Count of Monte Carlo Ako shrugged at Christian's response. He'd meant to give the kid the idea that his concerns weren't something to worry about, but he was never the best with words. Anyway, the kid was three, and had on heck of a head start as far as maturity went. He'd figure it out sooner or later. As they approached the room, one didn't need Annie's sense of auras to feel the bad vibes coming through the door. Ako was sure that even normal human ears could hear the clatter from within. He looked down at the kid as he pointed out that his mother was mad, but decided not to say anything about the obviousness of the statement. "I think I'll go in, too. Maybe seeing another friendly face will calm her down."
Christian shrugged and entered, the force field opening for him and Ako for only a mere moment before closing again. The doctors were avoiding Annie as around her lay a table and she sat on the bed her head in her hands, she could have been holding in a scream or crying- perhaps both. She glanced up seeing the two enter, her face was dry, but she could manipulate water that didn't mean she hadn't been crying.
Taking a deep breath she asked, "So, does Gidget have her body back?"
"Yeah," Christian said unsure of what to say.
"That's good," she said before standing, the air heating up around her, before cooling- the counter measure done by Christian. "She has some nerve ignoring me... sending you here... all of this is my fault- if I hadn't upped my powers they wouldn't have had the idea to do that to Shane and the two kids, or at least as soon. It is my responsibility and..." She grabbed an IV rack and slammed it down in anger, before wincing, her ribs hadn't been fully healed yet.
"You can't take on the whole world," Christian suggested.
Annie glared at her son, taking a deep breath before snapping, "I'm a genius! I've heard that for years. I'm supposed to think things through, but I never do! Leave..." her voice cracked as she buried her head in her hands again, "Please, just leave..." |

Daisy raised a brow, she had a feeling this subsidiary company might have been Daedalus, and the substance the machine had been used more than once. Shane hadn't been a meta when she had first met him and the cameras catching Annie go liquid, not normal- well for her- or wasn't. "Yeah, yeah," Daisy said waving a hand, "I'm following. This machine thing, bad news, kills metas turns them into something for raw power. And let me guess, Solidad Moreno- Leviathan Cortez- wasn't the only one who used this stuff. Go on, I'm listening and remembering everything." |

"Well in a sense he was. He hid the device and took it upon himself to kill anyone else who knew of it's completion. He then attacked a small group of metas and divided it among himself and two partners. Valhalla got a hold of some of the substance. The M.E. at the time was put in charge of seeing how it was extracted from dead metas and how it affected living creatures."
"The experiments were small at first, but they understood what it was and how it worked. The first meta test subject was...voluntary. Annie's powers underwent over a decades worth of evolution in a matter of seconds. Their second test was on someone who was not only human, but immune to the contact effects of standard meteor radiation. That person was my brother."
"You remember how he got himself good and injured at the hospital. Dr. Acula saw it as the perfect opportunity to not only see if a resistant human could be imbued with power, but to see if the substance had restorative capability as well. Project Pandora worked better than they had hoped. Shane could not only walk again, but he became a meta."
"There was just one problem. His natural immunity was fighting the transformation. While at the same time, the substance was continuing to change him. This genetic dance caused him to become unstable. His body was attacking itself. So in order to maintain himself, he has to consume living bio-organic material."
Gidget took a small break from her task to turn on the satellite imagery display for Daisy to see. It zoomed in a few times until it was able to adequately show the growing biomass. "That thing is...was him. But not entirely."
"During Cortez's attack on Valhalla, he killed me. My memories were stored in a machine not unlike the one I am working on. It drove Shane mad, and he went into exile. During which time he abducted several dozen girls and young women in an attempt to find a way to put my memories back into a body. Shortly after he left, the body you see in front of you was taken from here and moved to what is now Daedalus HQ. At the time there was no Daedalus, no. It wasn't until Trinity and I discovered what they were really up to here. We cleaned house, and the remnants of the old Valhalla became Daedalus."
"You know what happened shortly after that. They threw up the anti meta red flag and started their campaign of fear. In the background they were taking metas hostage, killing their families, and using them in experiments if not outright eliminating them. But they never forgot about Shane, their prototype for weaponization."
"Nearly a decade later they came across a person who had become two people. A meta-human chimera if you will. They wanted to see what the pure meteor radiation would do to this being. But they didn't have the machine. At least, not until they remembered that they had rebuilt and revived my body for that very purpose. Like Charles Ray did to me thirteen years ago, they had put my body into a suspended dream like state. In that state they could show it any parts of a schematic, puzzle, or anything that they needed completed. My power showed them how to make it all work. They used my mind to build another machine."
"They used the pure substance to split the chimera's duel personalities into two separate people. One with unmatched psychic capability, and the other with unmatched invulnerability and strength. What they apparently lacked was Shane's intelligence. He consumed them, and what you are seeing on screen is the resulting menace."
"If you had come within a mile of that thing, the psychic feedback would have either paralyzed you, or it would have killed you outright. From what he told me, the biomass is collecting to enlarge itself. At the same time it is transforming metas and exceptional humans into bio-morphs. It is building an army with the intention of integrating the whole of humanity into it so that there will be no more conflict. Humanity will become a hive, and that thing will be it's mind."

"A lot of things," Daisy replied with a sigh. "I'd like to say that all this surprises me- and it might or should considering I didn't know all this- but it doesn't surprise me. I'm betting Annie is blaming a lot of this on herself, and since she's your friend I would bet you have your hands full with her at the moment, since from what I've seen of her she is remarkably talented at pulling off stupid ideas... And the whole idea of humanity becoming some mega-hive doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling, but that probably would be a given."
She pinched the bridge of her nose, her headache was forming again, "Out of curiosity, where has Annie been all this time? If she was the first test subject shouldn't she be kind of important for Daedalus? Unless they did have her and she just recently got away and that is one of the reasons she attacked them with Shane, for revenge?"
She shook her head, her blonde hair following the movement, "If you could somehow visualize memories- change what someone sees into video, that would change this story from hear-say to something I could work with more. Of course, that could be me getting my hopes up, just hoping that that was what you meant by committing the memories into something visible." |
