It was kind of an open question anyway. XD
Yeah, it sure is a shame to have the 'basic' fantasy sink in there, unless it's done particularly well. These days its usually best to gently parody these things. I myself only have magic and dragons, though they are bird-like dragons that can't actually fly. XD I like dragons too much to leave them out!
Boring invincible hero is usually something that can be overcome after a while of thinking through a character, unless it's well done. Really, well done is about the only thing that works, since nothing is original. XD I was just reading the Belgariad for the first time (I just finished it) and it's about the most cliche thing EVER. It was pretty obvious the lengths the author went to to stop things being too powerful. I don't think it worked. I really like cliches though, because it's a challenge to work with them, make them do good things, and be fresh. I really enjoy that.
I honestly don't read much sci-fi as of right now. 8u I prefer steampunk and fantasy. I'm just now getting into it, but I think it will be a little later until I get passed my fantasy writing.

Cliches are okay I suppose, it just depends how you use them. I don't really get along with certain scenes though. For example you get to this really emotional climactic moment where secrets are being spilled and theres a lull in the story line as if everyone in that scene is in shock, then something pops out of no where and attacks the characters or someone comes running in and theres an emergency that can't wait. Kinda makes everything feel like the author hit a stump and didn't know what to do so they interrupted the moment. Though it can be done well, it doesn't have to be done.
I've also written my fair share of dragons (my wall is full of pictures and small statues of the things so I do like them too), but I try to make them a little different from the normal. One I put into a story was about as big as a medium sized dog and it ate fruit, it also had wigs but instead of flying it could only glide so it had to do from a good height to be able to go far, it was also an over weight pet of someone's so when it does try to glide it falls like a rock rofl I made it prey instead of preditor, but it kept its fire breathing as a deffense mechenisim. Larger dragons that had bat like wings were the smaller one's preditors. The bigger ones I made about the size of a house.
EDIT: Must fix typos...
