Is rap music? Should rappers be allowed in this guild?

Well, I personally am totally against rap,
But hey.
They're song writers, vocalists, ect.

SOME Rap has some music in the background, so SOMEONE has to be doing the music..
I say let them in.
But some Rap is just pointless.
For instance, Shoulder Lean, Snap yo' fingers, Chain Hang low, ect.

how narrow minded can you get? Most of that is dance music and/or is just supposed to be fun, if you bothered to look into rap a little more you would find the songs that "have a point to it" which have more complicated and meaningful lyrics than most rock songs. if you wanna sit up there on your pedestal and shoot down anything doesnt fit into your idea of Music go ahead. But why the hell should someone be discriminated against for their musical taste?

I'm not against rap, because it is a great genre of music and every genre of music has its shitty artists so dont even start steriotyping songs

I am in total agreement I guess that different tastes has nothing to do with important feelings. Music is MUSIC no matter what the heck it is. Genres of all types are interesting!! By the way, i am new...To Gaia, not just this guild. 4laugh mrgreen

Just because you dislike rap doesn't really mean it's not music.
Everyone in the world has their taste in music and i personally like hip hop and rap.I hate rock,yeah i do but i still think it's music

I really don't like rap. It's just like poetry with some weird sound effects. It just doesn't sound like music. I hate it. Or maybe thats because my bus driver always plays unkown rap music really loud... Anyway, just say your thoughts on it.

I think people just listen to it because they think it's "cool" or whatever.

Exacly. It could be the same thing for religion. I mean think about it. The people that come to your door that are always trying to convert you is because they prolly think there religion is the best, but there is no best religion. Its what you believe and how much you believe in it. Its not a matter of religion you are, its the matter of how much you believe in it. Just like its not a matter of what kinda music you listin to its the matter of how devoted you are into it. well thats just my opinion

Don't get me started on religion, though... The difference between God and Rap music is that you can't turn on the radio and hear God, so rap has the strength of proven existance.

On the subject of rap and hip hop, though, the reason many people don't like it is because of their preconceived notions about what the subject matter and talent actually involves. Most of these are simply individuals who have listened to mainstream stations and heard celebrities such as 50-Cent and Eminem, not even thinking that there might be something more. For instance, I hate to say it, but there IS good country music out there, you just don't hear it from the likes of the idiots on the radio.

If you're wanting good hip-hop, listen to Atmosphere, listen to Outkast, Listen to Aesop Rock... Hell, listen to Bone Thugs n' Harmony, even listen to the Grey Album, Dangamouse's remix of JayZ's black album and The White Album (if you're not too busy adhering to the 'no classic songs' rule.)

I am personally not a big rap or hip-hop fan, but as a musician I have to appreciate it for what it is, a form of musical art. There are rappers out there that can spit lines on beat so fast your head would spin, and to do that with rhythm does take a talent... For instance, try singing or talking while tapping out an 8 part beat at 180BPM on a djembe or drumset. Now try to make it sound good.

Think about all the hip hop artist you just mentioned, they all came from the street they were nothing and made somthing out of themselves. They were living in hell were you could be shot just for wereing a certain color in a certain part of the city. rap is more then music its what the artist is, what he came from, how he feels.

i hate rap too, but all sound is music, so i can't really do anything. anyway, yu need a variety of music, and i appreciate rap for the fact that it's REAL emotion.

if you've ever heard the roots or common that's hip hop, otherwise known as real rap, people like unk and mIMs that's just rap, kilin' and cussin' , plus the first two artists i mentioned are great perforers live and in studio, the roots play instruments, like drums, guitar, and all that stuff give them a chance and yes i think rappers should be able to join this guild to they can learn to be a true mc of hip hop

Well, I don't like rap, and I do think the majority of it it's just meaningless "look at me, I'm a badass" stuff from guys wanting to make money. But then again, that could be said about nearly any other type of music.
There are rappers who do make a difference. Right now, I'm thinking of one of the first portuguese rap/hip-hop band that showed up, before the big "rap wave", who have a lot of sucess, and they deserve it. They are the "Da Weasel". Their lyrics have a lot of meaning, talk about many social issues...Even though they've turned more and more commercial with time. But they've been around for 14 years, and they're still good.
So, even though you may not like rap, many people don't, and most of it sucks, you can't just say it isn't music...because it is. Even though there are many "stars" destroying it mercilessly. rolleyes

Rap is music, just like rock or pop or what ever...
The only difference is that rappers produce a melody and/or harmony with their voice (and a little bit of synth so fill out the beet).
Were as a indie band for example will use a guitar or keyboard.
Also people disapprove of rap because of the studio beets, created synthetically, rather than by a real drummer. Believe me, it's just as hard to create a beet on a drum machine than it is on a drum kit.

If anyone wants to try and get into rap then just listen to 'Plan B'.
He's a British rapper from London, he plays guitar as well.
