"Who says you have to pay for an-"
Heather was abruptly caught off guard by the blinding luster around her. It reminded her of the the end of the movie her stepfather used to watch. She couldn't remember the whole title at that moment, but she was sure it started with 2001. Her eyes, capable of perceiving spectrums of light beyond that of humans, glistened at the unique beauty she was able to see
"Anywhere, as long as it's with you." she said breathlessly. "I'm not gonna make it a habit, but I'm spoiling the ever loving s**t out of us today."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I will not, nor will I ever, allow you to probe my mind for so little as the name of a color." Rydia scoffed in a voice that was very similar to her grandmother's more regal tone. "Do not mistake my assistance for anything more than the most base acknowledgment of how little my grandmother and Fenris trust you. Had it not been for their validation of you, I would have slammed the door on you the moment I caught your scent."
"Even now, do you wish to make right by Fenris because of the way you hurt her, or merely to alleviate the guilt you feel? Granted, any act of goodwill brings with it feelings of pride and accomplishment, but that should not be the primary motivation for such actions. Good should be done for the sake of what is just. The sake of bringing decency to a world that is often seen as uncaring. That is what I was taught growing up, and those principals allowed my people to rise above the men that ruled before my grandmother."
Only to be brought down by an evil that slaughtered 99% my people in a matter of hours.
Rydia felt a wash of sadness overcome her. She took a deep breath in defiance of the tears that threatened to shed from her eyes. She refused to cry in front of Legio. She brought her right hand up to her eyes and covered them with her thumb and forefinger.
"Freya and Okami weren't complex. You have everything you need to know. It wont take much to please their palate. Please, leave me be." she asked with a sigh.
Rydia raised her free hand to acknowledge that she heard what Legio had said. She then dropped it and said nothing more. She just waited for him to leave.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heather smirked and replied, "At the risk of sounding like I think of you as property, which I don't, I consider you the crown jewel. Without you, the rest of it means nothing. Besides, when was the last time either of us had a day out to treat ourselves. A month? I was in prison and you were hiding from the shadows. Let's go nuts!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Silhouette waved her hands once again. Then again. And again. Her brow knit as she looked through the memories.
"They didn't. No courtship. No dating. Just a one sided, ah! Here's something."
The scene shifted again. They were it what looked like an empty corner office of a tall building that overlooked a city. There were three people. One was an older Freya, who looked to be in her late teens. At that time, she had none of the animal traits that Trinity had always seen her with. The other person was a pregnant, black woman in her early twenties that lay on the ground unconscious, but breathing at the feet of the third person. The third was Alines. His hair was loose and wild. He looked down at the pregnant woman with hard eyes. Eyes that had once been green, but were then yellow with red sclera.
Freya approached cautiously and whispered, "Wh-what happened?"
Alines' eyes became frantic. He looked to Freya and insisted, "Jackie, she...it just happened."
Freya threw caution to the wind, ran up to Jacqueline, and dropped to the woman's side. She checked Jackie's pulse. Good. Breathing, slow but even. It was like Jackie was asleep.
She stood up and looked to Alines. "What did you do?"
Alines reached behind his back at an awkward angle and pulled at something. He removed and displayed an old kabar knife that dripped with blood.
"She tried to stop me. To kill me. After she told me how much she loved me. Is she..."
"In a coma. I'm no doctor, but I think your kid's okay."
Alines sighed and inhaled sharply with a mix of relief and panic. He turned his back to Freya and walked toward the window. He dropped the knife along the way and placed his hands against the glass. She watched wordlessly.
"First my parents, then your family, and now even she has defied me, now. I do this for her, for our child....for Sara." he bemoaned.
Freya took a few steps toward him and opened her mouth to speak.
"I...I need you."
Freya halted in mid step, her mouth still ajar. She had longed to hear those words for so long, but she had resigned herself to being his right hand. "Alines? What is this?"
"You've been with me in this from the start. No questions. No doubts. Just devotion to our ideal. An ideal I knew Jackie was hesitant to get behind, but I never thought she'd..."
He turned on to face Freya, his yellow eyes looked into her very soul. "You said once that you loved me, but I dismissed it as mere puppy love. Then again you said it, but I was with Jackie. Now I understand the depths of your love for me. You would never betray me as everyone else has."
"Never." Freya affirmed.
Alines seemed to float as he approached her. He graced her cheeks with the back of his fingers and looked into her eyes without blinking. Her gaze never wavered.
"Even so, the mother of my child betrayed me. I not only need your love, I need your rage, Freya. Prove your devotion to me, and you will have the love you desire so desperately."
The tears flowed freely from Freya's eyes. "What do I need to do?"
He leaned in, put his lips next to her ear and whispered. "Subjugation will no longer suffice. They have to die. To suffer. Do this for me. Kill. Kill them all. So that we can stand atop the ashes of humanity together."
Her decision took less than a second, but in that small amount of time she thought about how afraid she had been to spend the rest of her life alone. Her father had hammered home that love was a weakness. Hypocrite. She would not be standing there had he adhered to what he forced on his children. Then there was her animal like appearance and behavioral ticks. That attracted freaks.
But Alines understood. He was like her. She could tell. Since that day he carried her home after being pelted with rocks. The more she heard him speak and watched him as a kid, the more she grew to admire him. That admiration turned to love. Unrequited. He loved Jacqueline. But at that moment...
"Yes. I'll do it." she breathed.
Alines tilted his head downward and put his lips to her neck. She gasped and wrapped her arms around his back. His left hand moved to-
Silhouette put her hand up harshly and brought the memory to a halt. "I can't watch anymore of that. b*****d. I never knew the depths to which he sank to keep Freya as his attack dog."
Heather stumbled at first but quickly recovered her footing. "Oh man. That's a lot better than going through shadows. I remember the first time Trinity did that I threw up."
She looked up at the Galleria and grinned. She quickly sent a message to her driver to meet them at the parking garage of the shopping center. She also advised that he keep an eye out for anyone that might be tailing him.
"Okay. He should be here by the time we're done shopping. Ooh, I haven't had a fresh pretzel in forever. I wonder if that place is still open?"
Just as they crossed through the breezeway, Heather hopped forward with her hand behind her back and turned to face Liv. "I hate to be needy, but I should probably get some proper footwear. I'd rather not cause a scene 'cuz I got dragon feet. I think it's time to show you what sort of kid I was before I got scaly."
A few minutes later, Heather led them to a store called "Rebel Wastes." It specialized in goth, grunge, and punk apparel. She couldn't help but grin from ear to ear. It had been so long since she'd gotten to dress according to her favorite aesthetic. When she became more lizard like, everything looked terrible on her. It didn't help that her favorite brands favored cat-girls as opposed to any tail havers who didn't have a rear appendage that was one size all the way down.
Something dawned on her at that moment. She put her hands up to her earlobes and felt around them. s**t. Her piercings were gone. She guessed it was to be expected. She spent the last half decade or so without ears.
"Crap. My piercings closed up. I'm gonna have to go through all that mess again. I guess it's a good thing they have licensed piercing specialists in the back."
Deora Alvarez trotted down the hallway as Carak followed beside her. They rounded the corner and spotted Legio. The wolf-hound was quick to growl at the perceived threat. He wasn't able to voice his dislike for long, though. After a few seconds, the jewel on his collar glowed the same color as Rydia's spirit claws. With a wink of light, he was gone. Deora looked down at where the good boy once was and sighed, "Guess she really wanted him back."
Deora looked up at Legio and looked at him curiously. She'd heard about him, but had yet to meet the man/thing. At that moment, he seemed like less of a potential threat and more like a lost child. She really wanted to go to the pool again and spend time around her literal element, but she couldn't just leave the guy there.
She walked up to him and waved, "Hey. Legio right? You look lost."
Heather clicked her tongue against her teeth when Liv mentioned healing. Would the same thing happen to her? As a dragon, her ears just sort of became leathery flaps on the sides of her head. She wondered if she'd just have to keep studs or rings in at all times to keep them from closing. Well, there was really only one way to find out, but she didn't want to take up a lot of time just doing things that she liked. In and out. 30 minutes at most to try on clothes and pick out a weeks worth of new wardrobe for now.
"What if you kept the piercings in? Would your healing just push the jewelry out?" she asked Liv as they entered the store. "You could get a few to try out while I pick my new wardrobe. Just tell them to put it on my tab."
A little over thirty minutes later. Heather had two handfuls of shopping bags and a new outfit. A simple black on red ensemble. Black T-shirt with a grey dragon design on the lower right torso, a red half skirt secured by a belt with a chain that hung from the front and back loops over black shorts. Asymmetrical stockings that came up to her right thigh and left knee with large boots that had way too many buckles. She also opted for a studded wristband and a few small black gold bracelets. She felt like a new woman after so many years of taking what she could get to fit her reptilian frame.
She wondered if Liv had taken her suggestion to try new piercings. Either way, Heather couldn't see her girlfriend right away, so she called out, "Liv, I'm good to go!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Deora chuckled, "Yeah, you're kinda screwed without any of that. I knew a guy from my old neighborhood who could help with the ID thing, but it'd probably be best if you got your papers legally. Y'know, Gidget got in good with the president this morning. Maybe she could help you get your credentials and get set up with other things. This place has got all kinds of programs and stuff to help people who want to go back to living out of here."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Gladly." Sil said as she made a few more motions to get to the last memory of Alines.
It was the roof top of the tallest building in the city. Most likely the same one from the previous memory. Alines stood over a chained down Adam Crescent, a battered and bleeding Kae'lonni, and help up a Latin woman with black and white angel wings by her neck
Alines, whose eyes were covered by a white strip of cloth wrapped around his head, looked into the woman's eyes as though his own eyes weren't occluded. "Sweet little Lorelei. I gave you a chance to leave with your family. Why did you stay?"
The woman, Lorelei, choked out, "The same reason you let us live, cousin. Because we're family."
Kae'lonni reached for her blade, Izayoi. Alines, without so much as a glance, swept his foot sideways and kicked it away. It slid until it was stopped under the boot of Freya, who had just arrived in time to see Alines admonish his older cousin.
Alines glanced over to her and smiled, "Ah, Freya. Perfect timing, and it looks like you wrapped things up with Teshoumaru."
Freya clenched a wound up and bloodied kusarigama in her right hand. It still dripped with the blood of her brother. Her eyes were steeled, and her face hardened. She replied with a curt and simple, "Yeah. It's done."
Adam clawed at the ground as he tried to break free of the chains that held him to the roof. "Goddamnit, Freya!" he growled.
Kae'lonni stared at her little sister with disbelief. "No...you didn't. It's a lie." But after a moment's silence, she knew it was so. She inhaled through her teeth and screamed, "Are you proud of yourself now, Freya?! Is this what you want?! What about what Dad said before he died?! What about Mom?! She's waiting for her children to come back! And you...you!"
The whole time, Freya couldn't bring herself to look at her sister. She knew Kae'lonni was right, but she couldn't say it. Not just yet.
Alines scoffed, "Please. She's devoted to our cause. To me." He then pulled Lorelei a bit closer, reached forward with his left hand, and broke her right wing with a twist of his wrist. She screamed and writhed in right hand as she tried to summon up a flickering light from her palms. Alines then requested coolly, "Freya, be a dear and finish things with your family. I have just a little more to do before I toss my cousin off the side of this building."
Fenris squirmed and moaned as Freya dropped her kusarigama with a clatter and picked up Izayoi. Adam and looked to her with a mix of sadness, disgust, and anger. Kae'lonni looked at her little sister with pity and sorrow. Freya took one last look at Adam, and a longer one at her sister as she walked up to them, and then past them. With a desperate bound, Freya made the last leap toward Alines with her blade drawn.
Alines dropped Lorelei, spun on his heels, and caught the blade with his hands just before it pierced his chest. His fingers bled as his skin reacted to the metal. "I knew it! Even you wouGCHK!!!"
A second, hidden black pierced his throat and went out through the back of his head. It was Teshoumaru's telescoping blade. Blood ran down and onto Freya's left hand as she cried and hung her head. "No...this isn't betrayal, Alines. All of my love for you is being put into this last act. I'm setting you free...and sparing the world our hate."
The blade had sliced the wrapping that Alines had used to cover his eyes. Freya looked up at him and into what had become of those once brilliant eyes that she would lose herself in. His eyes had lost any semblance of humanity. They were completely red, and furious. But as they looked to each other, she swore she could see something of the old him in there. Just a hint of that green she fell in love with.
He gurgled and coughed up blood in her face. His teeth grit hard enough that she could hear them begin to crack. She couldn't see what the others were doing. She didn't care. She was lost in the despair of that moment. "I'm sorry." she hiccupped with a crack to her voice.
With one fluid motion, she drew both of the blades from his grip and neck, spun horizontally in the air, and slashed the Izayoi through his eyes. The cut released an explosion of dark power that seeped into Freya's pours and threw her off of the roof.
She looked up at the starry sky as she fell. She could feel whatever came out of Alines working it's way through her blood stream. She wasn't worried about that. The fall would certainly kill her first. Good, she thought. It's better this way.
But instead of the impact she expected, she felt a sudden shift in gravity as the world around her became a film negative. Shapeless beasts slinked and wrapped around her. The world around her became so much more dark. "Is this Hell?" she mused aloud.
Silhouette raised a hand and stopped the memory. "That's enough. You don't need to see what comes next, and she doesn't need to experience it again." she insisted.
Fenris whined, "Please stop. I don't want to remember anymore."
