jedi_master_tenku [Philosophy In A Teacup] DJ Trouble Why don't you want to live in Japan? >_> The racism against foreigners is really bad. Even in the Pokémon Centers; I've heard so many horror stories of star-struck foreigners going to buy hundreds of dollars worth of merch, only to be told at the register that they're not allowed to buy so much/so many things. Because they're not Japanese. I'd be fine visiting or maybe even having a vacation home for short stays (three months or less, so I could stick with a tourist visa instead of having to go through the red tape to get anything else), but permanently living there? No thanks.Hehe, yeah, being a foreinger in Japan isn't easy. Even if you were born there, if your blood isn't Japanese enough, you don't have the same rights as other Japanese. Pretty crazy stuff. >: You guys are making me less and less heartful of going to japan.

Don't get sucked into the glossed-over version of Japan anime/manga/the like give you. I know several foreigners who live/lived in Japan, from the token year abroad to teach English, to going to a four-year university, to actually living there indefinitely. The people from the former two categories could not wait to get back to their home countries, the racism was so horrible. And the people who live there indefinitely are constantly griping about, but that's all they can do, because the racism is pretty much legal.
Japan's totally fine to visit. You generally don't encounter a lot of the racism then and the Japanese people love you and all is well and whatnot. I'm still visiting in the spring, after all. But once you try living there for any extended period (i.e. anything that would require a Visa greater than the automatic tourist Visa), things suddenly change and the people don't love you anymore and just want you to get the hell out of their country.
Of course, you can survive indefinite/permanent residence, but you have to have a really thick skin and the ability to let things go.
