Ok. I'm back. Had to take a little time out there, even thou I did post here and there. Here is some movie news I found.
Transporter 3 poster as been release.
filmonic Wolverine In Trouble Say Gossips And Liars According to Hollywood Elsewhere X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been having some behind the scenes drama involving director Gavin Hood and Fox CEO Tom Rothman. Lots of movie news sites have been posting it, however, it is full of crap and I will tell you why. They start off with: This is a second-hand but reliably sourced story about the currently-shooting Wolverine movie, Wolverine actually finished filming over 2 months ago. To prove it here is an article by The Daily Telegraph talking about the wrap party. It even has images of Hugh Jackman and his wife dressed in 70’s costumes and has quotes from them thanking the cast and crew for all their hard work. That puts the ‘reliably sourced story’ well and truly in the crapper. Anyway, here’s what they say the big drama is all about. There was/is a huge Wolverine set being recently used. I’m not even sure which lot it was built on, but the look or mood of the set is, according to a source who was told Hood’s view of things, supposed to be on the dark, dinghy and somber side. I only know what I was told, but the basics are that Hood was away from the set for whatever reason (shooting something else, taking a day or two off), and when he returned to the big somber set he was shocked to find that it had been repainted top to bottom on Rothman’s orders. The murky-scuzzy vibe was gone, and a brighter and less downish look had taken its place. Rothman redecorated? That’s the best they could come up with? If Rothman wanted to make the movie lighter he would have raised those concerns during the scripting process, he wouldn’t wait until director Gavin Hood conveniently goes off set for a few days to make a move. I am also sure Tom Rothman (however much of an a** he can be) is far to busy to care about what colour a set is.
And for all the Comic Geeks out there (because I am one)
filmonic Superman Not Flying Anytime Soon Variety’s Anne Thompson reports that Superman: Man of Steel, sequel to Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, is still not moving forward at Warner Bros. Fans have been clamoring all over the web–and on this blog–for a complete reboot. And within the halls of Warner Bros. the same debate rages on. They too believe that the last movie didn’t break the mold and wound up in some kind of middle limbo. Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project. There are no writers working on a Superman script now. The studio wants to figure it out. “It might be better to start from scratch,” one exec admitted. Do Warner Bros. ditch Bryan Singer and go with a director who will take Superman in a different direction? Or do they do a ‘Hulk‘ and pretend Superman Returns didn’t happen, eventually setting up a reboot?
This was the first I had heard of the next one.
filmonic Development In Fox vs Warner Bros ‘Watchmen’ Case Back in February news appeared that 20th Century Fox had filled a lawsuit against Warner Bros over Zack Synder’s upcoming Watchman movie. The whole case is a bit complicated and here is what it’s all about: Fox claims that between 1986 and 1990, it acquired all movie rights to the 12-issue DC Comics series and screenplays by Charles McKeown and Sam Hamm. In 1991, Fox assigned some rights via a quitclaim to Largo International with the understanding that the studio held exclusive rights to distribute the first motion picture based on “Watchmen,” according to the lawsuit. When Largo dismantled, the rights were transferred to producer Lawrence Gordon. Under a “turnaround agreement” between Fox and Gordon, the producer agreed to pay a buy-out price to Fox if he entered into any agreement with another studio or third party to develop or produce “Watchmen,” among other things. The project apparently bounced around to Universal and Paramount before returning to Warners. Now, Fox claims that neither Gordon nor Warners has paid the buy-out price or advised the studio of any other conditions required under the agreement, including procedures necessary to acquire the rights to “Watchmen” from Fox. Basically, according to Fox they own rights to Alan Moore’s Watchman and Warner Bros just went ahead and made the film. Now there has been a development. A judge has denied a Warner Bros. motion to dismiss 20th Century Fox’s lawsuit over the right to make a film based on the graphic novel. From Variety: Judge appears to conclude that Fox retained distribution rights to the graphic novel penned by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons through a 1991 claim, and he concludes that under the 1994 turnaround with producer Larry Gordon, Gordon acquired an option to acquire Fox’s remaining interest in “Watchmen,” which was never exercised, thereby leaving Fox with its rights under the 1994 agreement. This is bad for Warner Bros. Very bad. Apparently the court is still contemplating Fox’s motion for an injunction, which means that if they get it, Warner Bros will essentially be forced to give up all rights to Fox and they’ll in turn distribute the movie. The Fox rep also adds that “while the Judge’s opinion is preliminary and his views could change in the course of the litigation, his current take on the facts is consistent with our position.”
And another one for the comic fans
filmonic Justice League Official Dead. For Now Anyway. Despite having a wealth of characters from the DC world, Warner Bros have only managed to make Batman profitable with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Catwoman had the wrong creative team and Superman Returns didn’t meet expectations. More recently they have been trying to follow Marvel’s road by having a team movie, the Justice League. However the main problems were that fans didn’t particularly want it, and neither did Australia. From Variety: “We’re not off the notion of a Justice League,” Robinov says. “There’s a massive interest and knowledge in the comicbook industry and it takes time to sort of catch up and understand the characters and the history, where they’ve intersected with each other and what their worlds are. That’s part of the education that we’re going through.” “These are big, iconic characters,” [Greg] Noveck says. “So when you make them into a movie, you’d better be shooting for a pretty high standard. You’re not always going to reach it, but you have to be shooting for it. We’re going to make a Justice League movie, whether it’s now or 10 years from now. But we’re not going to do it and Warners is not going to do it until we know it’s right.“ This is the best thing that could happen. Batman and Superman already have their franchises (well Batman has anyway), so to cross them over and mix them up would be stupid and it wouldn’t work. So where do DC and Warner Bros go from here? “We’re having a lot of internal discussions on it,” Horn says. “We haven’t committed to any change at DC at this point,” adding that both Warners and DC are committed to turning “the properties into viable movie product in an intelligent way so that we introduce them like planes on a runway. They have to be set up the right way and lined up the right way and all take off one at a time and fly safe and fly straight.” So they have decided to do what Marvel are doing. Marvel have launched Iron Man, rebooted The Incredible Hulk, and will soon be giving us Thor and Captain America. All of these will then join together for a big old bash in The Avengers movie in 2011. DC’s first solo movie off the blocks will most likely be Green Lantern, which already has a script and is apparently ready to go.
