b0ggl3 Out of all due respect. im a rapper. but people say "they just talk about cars and money" and all this bullshit. but thats because there the only rappers u heard off. like 50 cent. thats not rap. thats talking with music playing. I only like rappers with "MEANING". that talk about stuff that people care about. BUT! if u ask me. thats no way to judge rappers as music writers. if guns and money isnt summit to write a song about... then why is cutting ure wrists and commiting suicide something to write about? its not the type of music that show ure skill as a song writer. its the meaning of the lyrics and how deep they go. thats the essence of a true song writer. so imo. i think ANYONE who writes music shud beable to join here. hm, i like you, you get what music is about,

Give me a break... Okay, I'm gonna compare "Rock music" to "Rap music". Based off of modern artists
Okay look at rock.
It's seen as more complex because the instruments are played live. Which is not true for the songs that have 3 power chords repeating but is true with more soloish styles.
And what about the lyrics?? The "meaningfull" music is almost always sad or angry. If there is a happy song it is usually labeled as "too pop" Alot of the wel known bands question christianity and speak of heartbreak, depression or drug addiction. There are a few bands that tend to tell stories to get their point across but it still keeps it's gloomy and/or angry feel. In the more recent years suicide has become a trendy topic to fit into a song. Emo is the biggest steriotype for rock today.
Lets look at rap now.
Okay, I'm gonna needs some help with this one. Growing up I listened to nothing but the "hip-hop/r&b" station, it was the cool thing to do for us. Alot of the songs talked about sex, drugs, violence etc. Those were the songs that cought the attention of our young minds, the very mention of sex was taboo for us so an entire song made me feel like a badass. More adult... This did not brainwash me into treating girls like whores and it did not lead me to become thug and smoke weed. Nope. Like many people, I grew up and ended up listening to more rock bands. After a while I did become brainwashed into thinking that all the rap music was s**t. I blamed any rejection i got from girls on the "influence of rap" and hated that so many bands made so much money off of songs that were not "serious"
This year i began listening to rap again and have found that rap is more serious than rock is most of the time. Alot of rock bands wallow in self pity with their songs and talk about giving up. Often just descibing pain. But rappers tell it like it is. They explain that they grew up in ******** up places and reach out to others like them. Rap (excluding the "booty videos") talks about survival and pulling through. Alot of rap warns people of the mistakes they made, they pass knowledge down to anyone willing to listen. Alot of these songs are even making it to the mainstream, but nobody notices because they have that shock vision of asses shaking on a fish-eye lense and silly refeances to asses.
Rap doesn't brainwash you, if your friend listens to rap and is an a*****e, it's probably because he's stupid or... and a*****e.
The way i see it is "rockers" are brainwashed to completely shut out rap and anything that does not use electric guitars. It's a damn shame that people have to view rock and hip hop as polar opposites. They're both amazing genres of music.

I make Hip-Hop. I don't Rap, I've tried though. My voice doesn't suit it, I have a tendency to trip over words and I never got over my love for silly puns. I personally play 16 different instruments in genres as diverse as Post-Rock, Electronica, Jazz, Industrial, Twee Pop, Classical, Folk, Punk, Metal, Noise, Indie, No-Wave and Trip-Hop. All with no knowledge of musical theory. I taught myself every single one of those instruments and styles. So no one here can tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
Sampling is an art-form in itself. Yes, it can be a lazy way to get a song to Rap over, but then the blues scale is a lazy way to perform a solo. However if it's done correctly, it adds a whole new level to the song. I'm willing to put money on the fact that anyone who dismisses sampling as lazy and theft doesn't know that Radiohead use samplers. Or that some of the earliest sampling is from a form of music that began in France in the 40's known as Musique Concrete. Or that Steve Reich, one of the most well respected classical composers of modern times used Sampling extensively. They've probably never even heard of Jens Lekman. They more than likely have no clue that Hip Hop culture began in Jamaica, let alone tell me what the 4 elements are.
It annoys me when people dismiss something I find very challenging as lazy and illegal.
