IHateMyRouter
My network is connected to an ambiguously labeled Asante router (FC3004, a model that doesn't exist) that I have never been able to access. I have tried on numerous occasions to connect to it using various guides, but to no avail. Please help me access my router!!

Router IP: 10.0.1.1
computer IP: 10.0.1.3
Router Model: Asante FC3004 (????)

hayne
Routers are quite cheap now, so your best solution might be just to buy a new one.

IHateMyRouter
Not my router to replace. Questionable if I could get that to happen.

hayne
I think that you need to supply more details about the situation (the network and what you are trying to do) and what does and doesn't work.

If it isn't your router, then in what sense is it "your network"?

IHateMyRouter
It's my father's network?

I'm just trying to communicate with the darn router.

hayne
You are still not supplying enough details.
Start by explaining in full detail (preferably with a rough diagram) how your network devices and your computers are connected to the router in question.

Tell us how the Mac(s) are configured in Network Preferences.

Tell us what you are trying to do. Does your Mac not have Internet access - is that what you are trying to achieve? Or what?

IHateMyRouter
All of the computers in the network are directly connected to the router. All of the computers are configured to appletalk.

I am trying to interact directly with my router so that I can configure port forwarding on it.

hayne
Note that AppleTalk is rarely needed (or recommended) to be enabled in modern Macs. It is only needed for communicating with very old printers.

So I take it that the router is working fine as far as connecting these computers and connecting them to the Internet? (I asked you to supply details but you persist in behaving like you are being charged by the word!)

So you need to figure out how to access the router's configuration page - this is usually available via a web browser at an address like 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1 - the exact address will depend on the router. And you will need to know the name of the admin account on the router and the password for that account. If you don't know them, you could reset the router and then it would have the default admin name & password - what these are will be specified in the router's user manual.

IHateMyRouter
Wait, I'm not? surprised

Network and internet connection are fine, the only issue is communicating with the router itself. Inputting its IP on a browser does not connect me to it. Not being able to connect to the router in this way is the issue I'm trying to resolve.

hayne
Your latest response is an example of not-supplying-enough-details.
(Your response to questions should generally have more words than were used to ask the question - compare the number of words in my posts to you and in your responses.)

What exactly did you try? What happened (in precise detail) when you tried that?

In particular, what happened when you tried to connect to the default IP address of the router? (see the FAQ on the above Asante page).

If it came to that, what happened when you tried to reset the router?

IHateMyRouter
Problem: When I try to access the router from my web browser, I get an error or nothing happens.

-Make sure you typed in the address correctly. (Default: 192.168.123.254)
-Add http:// in front of the address.
-Try http://192.168.123.254:88.
-Make sure the link light on the front panel is on for the port you are plugged into. (If it is not, you have a bad cable, wrong type of cable, have not seated the cable well, or have a problem with your computer's ethernet adapter card.)
-Make sure the router is plugged in and on.
-Make sure your computer is set to DHCP (Mac) or Obtain IP address automatically (PC) in the Network control panel.
-If there are any manual settings in your Network control panel, make sure that any IP Addresses are set to 192.168.123.xxx (where xxx can be any number other under 254).
-Check LEDs to make sure you have a functioning unit.
-Reset the router by unplugging it, waiting 10 seconds, then re-plugging it.
-Restart your computer.

I tried all of the preceding. They produced no results. As much as I'd love to write you an essay in response to every post, a few sentences conveys everything I have to say. I'm the one asking the oblivious questions, not the one trying to respond with an informed solution. When I say 'I have already tried all of these,' generally it implies that they did nothing to solve my problem. As for what the statement would be in reference to, that would be the link placed directly above it, which I have reiterated above THIS statement. I'm not here to argue over who has a higher word count, I just want some help, please.

And, summarily, in regards to said networking issue, I tried all of the above remedies, none of which seemed to alter the situation in any way.

hayne
Sorry but you don't get it. You might think you are communicating adequately but you are not.

For example, you said above that you (sometimes) get an error message when you try to go to that IP address.
So what (exactly) did that error message say?
And when do you get an error message and when don't you?
How long do you wait while "nothing happens"?
And which lights on the router are on while this is happening?

You seem to be quoting some instructions from some document (presumably something from the Asante site) - don't do that. Instead tell us (in excruciating detail) exactly what you did and what you saw.
You need to supply enough detail so that it is almost as if we were there in the room with you. We don't need to know what colour your shirt is, but almost everything else. We need to know enough details of what you did in order to be able to judge whether or not you did it correctly and to interpret the results. So don't supply interpretations - just tell us the facts (in detail!).

Example of acceptable detail:

IHateMyRouter
The overwhelmingness of your incompetence continues to astound me. And here I was thinking that seeking organic assistance would be more successful than reading an FAQ. You belong on a Windows forum.

Goodbye.
@$$hole.

IHateMyRouter
Oh, you're French Canadian.

"I'm pretty quiet too..."

Echo made an IC response to something that Viktor was thinking, not saying. Metagame is a big no-no when RPing. I've noticed it at least a few times already; always make sure to pay close attention to what the character is and is not saying in a post. Your characters aren't omniscient - or freaky telepathic Nekos - so having your character act on knowledge they don't have is bad. A) It makes the RP seem less realistic. B) In some circumstances, a metagame post can potentially drastically alter a course of events. C) Newbs on Gaia twilight fanfic RPs metagame. And I don't think anyone wants to be compared to THAT.

Um, anyway, rant summary: Don't metagame post!

***Definition of metagaming: A player using knowledge that they possess but their character does not, and having the character act on their new magically obtained knowledge.
