Just what I need encouragement. :'D
I'm starting off the Lolita lifestyle, and I've been worrying about such things like this. After reading a few posts, I say, "Heck, let them stare. They're just jealous." ;3

We are in the same boat!
I agree - this thread and the one about little kids loving loli
are very uplifting~

I'm looking forward to after the holidays,
when I will finally have time to work on sewing my dresses~

I love making skirts....speaking of skirts.
Sometimes I'll wear a blouse and skirt and a headbow and go out to the mall....I think this is the most causal way to go ^_^

where i live dressing differently isnt good. you will get mostly bad comments and evil stares. I get evil stares either way, i don't know why.For me to get a nice comment is the rarest thing ever. Even my parents are like that crying So normally im in jeans and a shirt :/

Well this happened to a old friend of mine: she was at the mall in full lolita (and red dress with white lace I think) and her mother went to the restroom, so she had to hold her baby sister.
And a mom walked up to my friend and told her "I hope you're happy about what you did with your life." Thinking that she was a young girl who had a baby.

The most I get though are raised eyebrows, glares, and a snide comment (usually from the kids in my classes).

That when I would have said "Ahhhh, excuse you? You don't even know me..."

Or I would have looked at me baby sister and said, " Look honey, this lady thinks I'm your mommy! Silly ( cough*stupid *cough) lady!"

I always get the stares when I go out in it, and I have to admit that I still can't wear full lolita out when I'm by myself. I only wear it out if I'm with my friends. I'm slowly trying to gain confidence by wearing it with friends first.
There was one time when I went out to eat with my friends, and this butch looking girl behind us at the register was openly laughing at how I was dressed. I didn't see her, but my friend did. She said she wanted to ask her what she was laughing at when she looks like a boy and her girlfriend is dressed like a skank.

I would always say that if someone is trying to build their confidence in wearing the fashion, they should start with wearing it out with their friends. That way you've got positive support right there with you.

So here's a good one. Punk Lolita + being inside Hot Topic = "Excuse me, miss, could we try this on?" I guess she thought I worked there... XD

Typically the comments I get are positive, but occasionally I'll get a few mean comments when I'm out and about.
The best advice I can give is just the fact that if it makes you happy, who really cares what people are saying?
They're probably just jealous that we're adorable and they're not. <3 ;D

Ive never gotten too bad of a reaction. I think the worse reactions I get is from my own father at home >.< he is paranoid. I usually get very nice comments, a lot of questions as to what I'm wearing. Usually very positive. I think the worse I've gotten is someone said "Is it Halloween?" when I was in NYC and someone at my high school asked if I was going to make some Gothic cookies because I was wearing casual kuro lolita and carrying a cookie tray to my culinary class. I wasn't sure weather to be offended or just laugh because it was such a stupid comment it was funny.

Worst time was when I was going up some stairs and the guys behind me were trying to look up my dress -__-'
I mean I was wearing bloomers but still, that's pretty rude...

I've had a lot of good reactions too, people going up to me asking when I get my clothes from...and others saying "omg she looks like a doll!" that's positive in my opinion... ♥

Okay so originally my answer to this question would have been nice all the time! But I change my mind. It depends on the person and how they're approaching me.

My answer has changed because of a recent event, for international lolita day my area of lolitas met in DC for a picnic. It was way hotter then planned so we ate in the shade and then headed to one of DC's museums for a little fun and some air conditioning. While in the museums of course we got the normal "are you performing?" "are you in a play?" comments and some staring. Some people took pictures of us which is normal. But one little girl, probably about 12 just started snickering, and not just laughing or giggling, this was rude, snide, snickering. I just ignored it but it really pissed me off! AND her mother standing right next to her didn't do anything to stop her!! One of the lolitas in our group just started mimicking her, much louder then she had been, started laughing/snickering back at the little girl, staring at her! It was great because everyone stared at the little girl and the mother was super embarrassed.

So while on a normal basis I will say you should be nice and cordial, there are PERFECTLY good times to be rude. ^_^

IAWTC And kudos for snickering back, perfect comeback without shattering the lady-like appeal of lolita.

I usually get a lot of stares from people when I wear Guro (as well as Punk) Lolita. (haha) Maybe it's because of all the fake blood? I don't really get too much stares when I wear Gothic or Kuro Lolita because of all the "goths" and "emos" around so the people in my community are really used to dark clothing.

oh my~ I have gotten used to stares. Even when I am not wearing any of my makeup or Lolita clothing my face a lone tends to attract stares. Having holes (piercings) on your face attracts attention. It is depending on what kind of outfit. In college we have a Lolita club~ One of my friends has a nice body - cough - jealous-aha- she is beautiful and tall. Sometimes her outfits can be to sexy in a very cute way.= u = heh <3 it all depends The best attention is when little girls ask if you are a princess emotion_bigheart
