I may dislike it but I can't do anything beyond that. It's sovereign nation with it's own laws and government. We're not supposed to step into their matters.

The US military will not deploy a soldier to a country if their presence is against the country's laws. Female soldiers in the middle east must wear headscarves where it is law. We as American citizens are subject to their laws when we're in their country. As such, they are subject to our laws when in this country. It's not our place to meddle in this affair.

I saw this a LONG time ago. About the time they passed the bill.

Actually, that is a respect thing, they are not required to wear anything but their uniform. But I know what you are getting at. While it is not our place to meddle in their affairs it is the UN's place, cause this bill (if passed) goes against UN protections. Thus the UN could send in forces (what little they have), impose harsh sanctions, or just withdraw their aid and let the country suffer.

I'm going to be totally honest here...

There's little to nothing we can do for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, this is Uganda, not the United States. Last time I checked, they are two different countries, which means we are not allowed to mettle with the affairs of each others' governments. Yes, we can influence change, but, seriously, what are the chances that Uganda is going to change their beliefs because a few Americans believe it's immoral? If we really want change, we need to come up with something FAR more creative than a simple petition.

Second, as She Promised You Cookies mentioned, Uganda is a primarily Christian country. Obviously, in the eyes of many hardcore Christians, homosexuality is a sin. Yes, United States has the luxury of having multiple religions and preferences, thereby allowing a greater range of flexibility in points-of-view. But this is the United States, not Uganda. And, again, the Uganda government still has supremacy in their own affairs.

Third, and most importantly, this is immoral in OUR eyes, not theirs. Yes, of course I am against this kind of behavior. But who am I to say that another country (which includes their culture, practices, believes, attitudes, values, norms, etc) is immoral just because I say it is? It's like telling a mathematics professor that he/she doesn't know the Pythagorean theorem.

_______

All I'm saying is: A PETITION WILL NOT SUFFICE.

Your right a petition will most probably not do it ;/

Sorry for necro-posting.

The bill is now law sad Sad times ahead. 7 years ago, countries all over the world are passing progressive laws involving queer people. Governments are seemingly starting to swing left. Now - even within Western societies, so-called bastions of freedom - queer rights are regressing. Can't even enjoy at least a decade of gay euphoria. Even thought the back-to-back economic crises will strengthen and favor labor again but nope, we all continue to suffer.

Oh, well. The fight continues.
