I need to buy myself a new camera, but I am a complete novice when it comes to getting technical with the camera itself.
What would be a good starter camera for a more serious beginner?

I guess once we get more members anyone can add any other questions about their cams to this thread.

Personally I love and use the Canon EOS Rebel XS. Great beginners camera, and professional alike. Another great camera is the Canon EOS Rebel T2i. The T2i does both video and photography. It's a bit pricey, but the video and photo quality is amazing. Youtube has a lot of test footage using the T2i, I recommend looking into that. With either camera, a telephoto lens is a must to get those up-close shots of wildlife. You almost always have to get that separate, unless you buy a bundle from Amazon or some other shopping website/store. I don't have a telephoto lens myself, but I will be getting one in the near future. The XS is relatively cheap for a DSLR camera, but it does GREAT photography. I recommend looking up some photo's created with it. I'll be posting my gallery sometime tonight, or tomorrow so you can get a good look on it's performance. ^^

I love my pentax K200. It's very nice for closeups (which is really what I do) and it's nice for a lot of more casual and pro photography so you don't need to carry around 10 different lenses because the one it comes with does a good job of taking care of most of what you want to do. I would suggest getting a zoom lens and a telephoto lens to go with it 'cause the zoom kind of sucks (it's not as zoomy as I'd like). It also does some nice lens flare. It also comes with a built in manual <3 that thing has saved me SO MANY TIMES. >.<

For people starting out I always recommend the Nikon d90 and the Canon 550d. Great entry level cameras, with the 550d possessing the edge when it comes to video while the d90 has cleaner images (less noise).
