So, I'm sure you've all heard the news by now. If not, you must be really trying hard to not spoil the episodes you have yet to watch. If that is you, turn away now before you even try to read further!!

So, Smith is leaving. BBC has confirmed this, Smith has confirmed this. They've said Christmas is his exit. That leaves us with several questions.

1. Who will replace him?
2. What does this mean for the 12 Regen rules?
3. WHY did they give Paris Jackson, Michael Jackson's underage daughter a 18:1 chance of getting the rule?

My speculations:
1. I choose no participation in choosing a doctor, only in denying them. For instance, Hugh Laurie? Too well known. Though, I will say, if I did have a vote, it'd be on Paterson Joseph. He seems to be well suited, and a fresh face may do us good.
2. Back in the original series, the theory was born that the Time Lords may only regenerate a total of 12 times. With the current developments (I'm referencing the ending to this last episode, The Name of The Doctor) how is this even possible? And how do you think they'll spin it?
3. She may make a good doctor, but I still think she's a might too young for the role, though, honestly, there is no age limit to it. Still... What might River think?

I thought John Hurt was confirmed as the new Doctor.

Negative. John Hurt is
the 9th incarnation of the Doctor. He is not the Doctor, for he shunned that name during his time due to what he has done, but he is, in all purposes, the 9th regeneration. That makes Smith the 12th regeneration, but still the 11th Doctor. It's a little confusing, but it does seem to work. John Hurt is not the new Doctor, which is why people are still speculating.

How could he be the 9th regeneration? Wasn't that Christopher Eccleston?

Think of it this way, it has already been said that the John Hurt regeneration does not go by the name "The Doctor" (judging by the clues in The Name Of The Doctor). We can still have 11 Doctors and 12 regenerations. Also we're sure that he comes because 11/Matt Smith because:
1. the 11th Doctor is too sure he doesn't like this regeneration and knows that this regeneration rejects the name. There is no way he'd know that if this regeneration came after him.
2. There is a regeneration that we've never seen, between 8 and 9. There could be another regeneration between them.
3. If he is between 8 and 9, he would be the Time War regeneration. The Time War is undoubtedly the darkest time in the Doctor's life and it's likely that such a dark time would make him reject the name he held most dear for so long.

Now onto the regeneration rules. I'll just spit out theories and then order them from most to least likely after I tell you them:
1. River's kiss in Let's Kill Hitler. She used all of her remaining regenerations, didn't she? It's confirmed that she used two already (Melody -> Mels -> River. There may be more to bridge the time gap) but maybe the poison only took 2 regenerations to heal (which the Doctor didn't have). Doing the math, if River had 13 regenerations, used 2 and it took about 2 to heal the poison, the Doctor would have 9 new regenerations.
2. I'm not sure how much merit to it, but my brother keeps mentioning that Rassilon offered new regenerations to those who fought in the Time War. I've only heard this said by the brother and I don't know where he discovered it, whether it be on the internet or from a clip or something. This would be highly probable if, you know, River hadn't been able to regenerate and therefore regeneration hadn't been confirmed a biological thing.
3. Moffat throws the regeneration rule out all together to keep the series running.
3 seems the most likely, then 1 then 2.

Ok that seems to make more sense. Option 3 is likely but annoying.

I'm just freaking out waiting for the next episode. This is going to be an awesome season no matter what happens. Don't like to expect things...just enjoy what comes. Besides, I learned a long time ago that you can't assume anything when it comes to the Doctor.
