i make my own using a dress form, as well as use store bought, it really depends on what i'm sewing :/ i have to alter store bought to fit me peoperly so sometiems it's easier to simply drape my own patterns but if it's a simple a-line dress i wont do through the trouble of doing that *shrug*

Pattern making is not for everyone, but I highly recommend it to anyone whom wishes to sew beyond the realm of home sewing pillows and pajamas.

One of the books I suggest is Pattern Making for Fashion Design Fourth Edition, Joseph-Armstrong. It is a good book, not in metric. Metric books i use are mainly for menswear/ Tailoring.

Store patterns are not more simple or better fitted. I could guarantee that if someone really wanted to learn patternmaking, they could in time draft or drape a better pattern than the store bought one, and in less time since you wouldn't need to go to a store, look up a design, search for it in a bin, etc.

I draft/ drape my own patterns and I recommend others who are serious about sewing to take a class/ get a book. You won't be limited by the base design of a pre-fabricated pattern.

I make my own patterns surprisingly. It's like I have a 3D similator in my brain that can visualize the item's form for me so I can transfer it onto paper. I very grateful for it.

Another book to look into is PATTERN MAKING BY FLAT-PATTERN METHOD. If you can get an older edition, then it will be cheaper since it's an actual textbook. Hollen is the last name of the author.

I heart that book.
Anyone know of any goo draping books/lessons. I'm awful at draping and there are just somethings one easier by it.

I mostly make my own patterns but when I get lazy I'll buy a pattern. What's so difficult is altering your base pieces with weight gain/loss. It's so annoying. I draft my patterns from them instead of from straight-up measurements luness it's something different like a neck piece or hat. What I like to do sometimes is take an old pattern I bought and change it. I just trace the thing and do whatever like add pin-tucks or pleats.

When I design my own stuff I usually make my own patterns, but I also have a duck tape dress form of myself so I'm usually draping my newspaper on that in order to do it, but I also like working from store bought patterns, and I think it's good to do some stuff from patterns because then you learn how to do new stuff the proper way and then you can take those different things and put them into your own patters, for example, I would NEVER have been able to make the pattern for a lycra sleeve for a figure skating dress I made, I tried, and I failed, so I had to look it up, but now I remember so I won't have to look it up again, you see what I mean? hope that all made sense haha heart

One word:

Muslin.

You don't need a pattern if you have that and a mind to create.
