Goku and Chichi have a son named Gohan who was lost in the woods where Goku came to the rescue. Goku and Gohan are due for a reunion at Master Roshi's. Meanwhile an evil alien has landed on the planet and has found Piccolo when he was looking for a dude named Kakkorot. When the alien's scouter blipped a stronger reading than Piccolo's, the alien was off to find its source hoping that it would lead him to Kakkorot.

After Goku is reunited with his friends and introduces his son Gohan to everybody, the evil alien landed on Roshi's island too. The evil alien is in fact Goku's older brother Raditz and Raditz tells everybody that Goku is a saiyan warrior, however unlike most saiyan warriors, Goku is a disgrace because he did not wipe out the human race. So, because Raditz needs Goku for a hostile takeover, he kidnaps Gohan and gives Goku one day to think over the offer.

Raditz took Gohan to his spaceship and put the kid in there to shut him up, but when his scouter read a 710 power level, Raditz grew a little bit nervous. Then, Piccolo decides to team up with Goku to take down Raditz because Raditz is interfering with Piccolo's take over plans and Goku needs Gohan back. So when Raditz's scouter indicated the power levels of Piccolo at 320 and Goku's at 330, that made Raditz even more afraid that the kid's power level might not be exaggerated after all. The battle to rescue Gohan begins next episode.

Goku manages to grab Raditz's tail, but because of the lies Raditz makes, Goku lets him go and now, writhing in agony, Goku is helpless. His son Gohan is tired of hearing his father in pain and thus has used that as his "super saiyan" weapon and is about to attack Raditz.

Damaging his Uncle, Gohan was rendered unconscious by Raditz shortly afterward. Then, grabbing onto Raditz, Goku holds his older brother long enough so that they both get hit by Piccolo's special beam cannon. The talk of the dragon balls interests Raditz's two comrades in outer space and the heroes have 1 year to train to be ready for their arrival. In the meantime, Goku is sent to "Other world" for a special surprise thanks to Kami.

Piccolo decides that he is going to train Gohan to combat the saiyans coming up. Krillin and the others must tell Chichi what happened to her boys, but Krillin is too scared to do it. Goku is on his way down Snake Way in order to meet King Kai who is supposed to train Goku for the saiyans. Goku tells the demon who is in charge of messages that to tell Fortune Teller Baba not to wish Goku back for a year and that he will owe Baba one later.

Krillin tried to tell Chichi the news about Goku and Gohan, but he just didn't have the guts to. Goku travels along snake way to meet King Kai still. Gohan starts his training with Piccolo and must survive 6 months on his own. He gets stuck on a high cliff after being chased by a dinosaur.

After spending the night at Chichi's, Krillin not only could not tell her the news about Goku and Gohan, but he also forgot the dragon balls when he returned to Master Roshi's. Bulma was able to convert the scouter to read power levels in the human tongue and now Krillin is stronger than Master Roshi. Chichi does learn the news about Goku and Gohan when she pays a visit to Roshi's Island just after Krillin is informed to get Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu for special training by Yajirobe at Korin's tower. That night, there is a full moon and Piccolo learns how the saiyans transform, so he destroys the moon and removes Gohan's tail and gives Gohan some new clothes too.

Gohan gets stuck in a cave where he meets a capsule corp robot who had been excavating some ruins and got stuck. The robot was rude at first, but then after helping Gohan, he had no choice but to shut down. Now Gohan is once again alone and must take care of himself, but he feels stronger at least thanks to the robot's advice.

While staying dry, Gohan finds a cave not knowing there was a brontosaurus hiding in there as well. By morning, Gohan helps the dinosaur only to run into the t rex who whaps him unconscious. When Gohan comes to, he notices his new friend is gone and realizes that he really must get stronger if he is to survive.

Vegeta and Nappa visit Arlia first and destroy everything and everyone on the planet claiming it has a serious bug problem and it did. There were nothing but bugs in that place. Now the two saiyans resumed their journey toward earth. Meanwhile Goku still travels along snake way and Gohan has finally learned to live on his own.

Tien and Chiaotzu were found in the mountains training where Launch tries to keep them company when Bulma informs them of the training at Kami's lookout. Meanwhile, Goku falls off of snake way and into the HFIL thanks to a bump on the road.

2 ogres Goz and Mez have a little fun with Goku. Goz does sumo wrestling while Mez plays a game of tag. Goku wins at both and then ends up back at the start of snake way. However, thanks to a piece of King Yemma's fruit, Goku will be able to keep going for a while.

Goku finds Princess Snake and mistakes her for King Kai. After eating and drinking and bathing, Goku has to escape Princess Snake and get back on the road to King Kai's place. He ties her up and then proceeds. Meanwhile, everyone else is training for the Saiyans's arrival.

Gohan missed his home so much that he decided to build a boat to travel across the sea so that he could make it home. However, he was stuck in a terrible storm and got shipwrecked.
