It was not one clutch but two who now would take wing for the first time. Dhremorath's hearts swelled with pride as he took in the sight of the young ones before him, all of whom had prepared themselves for this day. How well prepared they were he would soon find out. As Z'von surveyed the weyrling riders standing by, Dhremorath rumbled his approval. It would not be long indeed before rider and dragon would be able to fly together... if not, perhaps, this day.

Are you ready? he asked the young ones, checking them over for any signs of fear. If they were nervous, he would certainly assure them, but if too fearful it would be best if they remained behind for the time being. There was no sense in risking the young ones when they were but four months old.

"It's time," Z'von said, giving the signal to his students. They would know best how to buoy their dragons and prepare them for this momentous occasion. From the first flap mere days after leaving their shells, these little ones had been readying themselves for this moment. He felt they were ready. Did they? Glancing among the gathered weyrlings he too searched for any sign that additional help was needed.

Roll a d20 to see how well your dragonet does! You may roll up to three times total. Each roll will be a separate flight attempt. Before rolling again, you must fill out a RP post, as this is supposed to be roleplayed. After your third roll, you can continue to roleplay as you wish, but note that no further flying attempts can be made.

1 - 5: You start off strong, but then a gust of wind throws you off your game. Roll a d4 to see whether you're able to correct your trajectory:

  1. You veer off of your intended path, angling for a small copse of trees. Try though you might, you can't maintain control and crash into the underbrush.
  2. You've been doing a lot of flaps to prepare for this, and you manage to overcome this temporary hurdle, but ouch, your muscles hurt.
  3. The wind blows you well off course, but you use your tail to turn around, heading back toward the group.
  4. Nothing seems to stop the wind, and you are now well on your way toward the lake. Splash!

6-10: It's difficult to get off of the ground to begin with. This requires a lot more muscle strength than you were prepared for, and by the time you're airborne, you are already pretty tired. Roll a d4 to see what happens next:

  1. You aren't able to stay aloft long before you find your tired wings don't want to budge. You crash and break a claw. Ouch!
  2. You may be tired, but your are mighty! Take that, sky! You muster up a hidden reserve to remain in the air, but now the trouble is how you land.
  3. Nope, this was a bad idea, and you skid gracelessly along the ground into a heap. Shards.
  4. You are a sky warrior, and though tired you are not defeated. At the last second you find a thermal and rise above it all. ... Way, way above it, and... halp!

11-15: Psh, this flying thing is smooth sailing! You don't know what all the fuss is about. Except, now that you're here it occurs to you that you don't know how to land. Roll a d4 to see how you do!

  1. Flying is easy peasy, but landing is not for the feint of heart. Thankfully, you're a pro already, and... shaffit, where did that sapling come from? That stung a bit, and totally messed up the cool vibe you had going.
  2. Remembering something the Weyrlingmaster said to your rider a few days before, you use your tail to help you turn, but it's not quite enough. You end up, yep, right in the lake. Drat.
  3. Who's laughing now? You've got this thing. Yeah, take that! And that! And... whoops, didn't stick the landing.
  4. Nobody said this was going to be easy, but somehow you didn't realize it would be this hard either. Try though you might, you can't quite pull of the smooth landing you've seen all the adults do. But at least you managed to land.

16-20: How many ways could this possibly go wrong? You've managed to throw yourself completely off course, and honestly, any solution right now seems like a good one. Roll a d4 to see what happens next:

  1. No matter how hard you try, you're flying further and further away from the class, and at this point you're actually closer to the Weyr than to where you started. You manage to land, but nowhere near anyone else.
  2. You know what? Maybe this isn't so bad. Due to the copious flaps you've done in the past you're able to stay in the air, and with a little maneuvering, you even make it look like you're here on purpose. Right up until the point where you land, because oof, that wasn't something you want everyone to remember.
  3. Is it your hatchday, because you are killing it. Possibly literally, when it comes to the plant life you just demolished on landing, but you know what? You stuck the landing.
  4. Don't look now, but there's an unaffiliated dragon right in your flight path. You weren't expecting them, and they are way too close for you to move aside. At the last second, they go between and you're left scrambling as you fly right toward a tree - shaff!

Sjell and Green Soralieth - NPC Clutch

Soralieth was giddy. Well, as giddy as her clutchmates. Subtle glances were cast around, gauging the right amount of excitement and fear to exhibit. Everything was calculated down to the tiniest detail of her demeanour. This had become a natural part of who she was. Mimicking others was a true art, in her mind.

Sjell stood near her classmates, trying to decipher Sora's mood beneath her mask. She didn't seem especially nervous- more curious to see how things would unfold. The flappies of her newborn days could not have gotten her airborne- but now the actual sky was the limit. She gazed upwards, eyes whirling an excited blue-green, and Sjell couldn't help the small, secretive smile.

You'll see! I'm going to be the best flier here! Nobody will be able to look away from my shining performance. The young green oozed excitement and pleasure, as she pumped her wings a little.

Just try not to get too carried away, dear... Sjell countered, her tones mild but amused.

At last, Soralieth was given permission to test her wings, and with a fluting bugle she began to flap and push off the ground with her legs.

12
Psh, this flying thing is smooth sailing! You don't know what all the fuss is about. Except, now that you're here it occurs to you that you don't know how to land.

Up and up she went, trilling with uncontained joy. SjellMine, I can fly! She hooted and whistled and did her best approximation of a barrel roll- which mostly consisted of swerving left and right as she tried to steady herself.

Excellent work, Soralieth! How about landing?

Ah.

4
Nobody said this was going to be easy, but somehow you didn't realize it would be this hard either. Try though you might, you can't quite pull of the smooth landing you've seen all the adults do. But at least you managed to land.

This... might be a problem. Alarm turned her eyes yellow, and she glanced around to see if there was anybody she could copy. Unfortunately there was not. Did she put her wings up to go down? What about keeping them straight and gently gliding to the ground? Yes... That sounded good. And not painful.

She wobbled in the air as she circled back around, trying not to move her wings at all as she pointed her nose downwards. Sjell sucked in a breath, her heart stuck in her throat. She sent gentle encouragements to her darling green, whose vestiges of confidence had now utterly abandoned her as the ground approached.

Oh no, oh no, oh no... Soralieth shook as she skidded along the ground, half-running to keep herself from tripping. Finally she snapped her wings back, and the initial momentum faded away. She found her old mask- the happy, giddy one- and her eyes returned to the excited blue-green.

Did you see that? She asked her neighbours, utterly unconcerned with whether they were actually watching or not, I'm a natural. She stood a little taller, a little prouder, and Sjell found herself running those beloved headknobs and eyeridges with a warm smile once more.

D'hka and Green Lufianth

Lufianth grew in spurts these days and now easily dwarfed her rider where she had once snuggled comfortably with him in his cot. She minced a little in place, fueled by her excitement and D'hka's. The young man beamed, a hand resting comfortably on her shoulder. It was finally time for the dragons to take flight! No matter what happens, I'm proud of you. He reassured, knowing the young green was eager to please him of all things. I know. I love you. She nuzzled his hair affectionately before looking to Dhremorath with purple eyes. She wanted to make him proud, too! She would do her very best for them, and D'hka's constant stream of affection and pride was enough to chase away any nerves she might have had.

"Are you ready?" He asked, knowing she was. His not-so-little green had diligently practiced her wing flaps with nary a complaint. "Give it a try!"

Quote:
It's difficult to get off of the ground to begin with. This requires a lot more muscle strength than you were prepared for, and by the time you're airborne, you are already pretty tired.

Focusing hard, Lufianth flapped... and flapped... and flapped! She jumped as she did so but didn't quite have enough lift! This resulted in several more determined hops, and D'hka had to bite his lip. She looked so cute--but that wasn't the appropriate thought right now! "You can do it!" He cheered, and the young green seemed to take heart from his words.

With another hard push off the ground, Lufianth beat her wings strongly and felt the wind billow underneath them. Oh, but she was already so tired! Maybe she hadn't practiced her flaps enough. She knew her other siblings must be having a much easier time, and the last thing she wanted to do was be a disappointment!

Quote:
Nope, this was a bad idea, and you skid gracelessly along the ground into a heap. Shards.

She tried to pour her hearts into her efforts, but her trembling wings didn't want to support her. Lufianth hit the ground with a thump, tumbling nose over tail to land in a heap. Yellow bled into the blues and purples of her eyes. Oh, how embarrassing! She certainly hadn't meant to crash like that! D'hka must be ashamed, and Dhremorath and His would be disappointed, and--

Having already felt his dragon's spiral into anxiousness and disappointment, D'hka was sprinting to her side in an instant. "Are you okay? You aren't hurt?" He asked, immediately looking her over. No, but I-- "It's okay!" He interrupted, knowing too well what she was feeling. "That was your first try ever. Flying isn't as easy as it looks and takes a lot of practice. Do you remember what I said?"

Lufianth pressed her muzzle against her rider's chest, practically huddling around him. That you'll be proud of me no matter what. She said softly. "That's right." He pressed a kiss to her nose, stroking the sides of her snout as the yellow slowly faded from her eyes. "And I meant it. I love you. Do you think you can give it another go?"

For her D'hka? Lufianth wouldn't stop trying until she couldn't move. Yes. Maybe it will be better this time. The thought made her eyes brighten with blues once more, and she reluctantly allowed her rider to step back.

D'hka and Green Lufianth

Quote:
11-15: Psh, this flying thing is smooth sailing! You don't know what all the fuss is about. Except, now that you're here it occurs to you that you don't know how to land

Perhaps the brief rest and pep talk was all she'd needed. Maybe her first attempt had instinctively taught her something. Whatever it was, Lufianth drew herself upright, crouched and sprang mightily into the air. Her wings sliced through the air as she rose higher and higher. Though she was focusing as hard as she could on flapping, a squeal of excitement slipped from her. She was flying!

On the ground, D'hka laughed aloud with delight, their shared jubilance feeding into one another until it was almost overwhelming. Look at her go! You're amazing, Lufianth! He cheered, watching her with joy.

I'm flying! She crowed, riding the winds with apparent ease. Things looked so different from above! But... that brought up a sudden concern. How was she supposed to get back down? Lufianth realized she didn't have a clue, and her sudden alarm was a sharp contrast to her earlier mirth.

Quote:

Don't panic! You're doing great! Just try to angle yourself back towards the ground, nice and easy... D'hka encouraged. The little green did as instructed, wobbling a little in the air as she slowly but surely began to descend... That's it! Keep going!

With a squeak of alarm, Lufianth found herself coming towards the ground a little too quickly. She flared her wings out hard, her tail lashing as she desperately tried to slow herself. With a grunt, she hit the ground harder than she should have and stumbled--but she'd done it! She immediately twisted her head around, searching for her rider. D'hka laughed as he ran to her, effusive in his praise. It might not have been pretty, but she was safely back on the ground, and that was all he cared about.

Kinyegele and Green Metisoth

Metisoth had been, naturally, very thorough with her practicing down to the letter - when the Weyrlingmaster had given instructions she had listened with rapt attention and while there had been some questioning, mostly to learn the ins and outs as to why such methods were what had been boiled down to and to know, she had settled contently into such measured, dedicated tasks. Kinyegele had gained some similar measure of patience in wading through her dragons sometimes meandering way of learning a task without complaint. Such dedication would hopefully see them to fine results that day.

If not, we will simply have more practice to do, Metisoth reminded her rider, privately grateful that these first fumbling steps would be taken on her own. While she trusted Kinye complicity, she did not trust herself to do well while worrying about carrying her rider in such new things. Kinye, at least, would be on the ground to be her grandest cheerleader. "Right! But you'll do great - we just have to wear all the fumbling off first!" she offered optimistically in support.

Metisoth hadn't needed the extra optimism but basked in it anyways as she stretched out her wings and gave them a testing flap. Then, it was time to try and get off the ground.

Quote:
You start off strong, but then a gust of wind throws you off your game.

Metisoth found the takeoff to be as successful as she'd envisioned it, really. It wasn't graceful, no floundering and awkward child would be, but she was off the ground without too much flailing and fussing and was soon enough far enough away from Kinye below to almost feel a touch of longing for her other half as though they weren't simply a twisted mass of a being in two bodies now. She crooned fondly down at the girl before pushing herself up higher - and then came the wind.

Quote:
You've been doing a lot of flaps to prepare for this, and you manage to overcome this temporary hurdle, but ouch, your muscles hurt.

Wind was a natural obstacle for flying and one that Metisoth had, psychologically, been prepared for. Physically, however, it required a lot of fussing and fighting - more than her still developing flight muscles were ready for. But, she was still airborne and would land with only some fumbling from her first attempt - to much fanfare and praise from Kinye who was practically jumping with joy as she threw her arms around her dragon's neck.

"Look at you! That was great!"

Metisoth hummed with delight. Yes, hopefully a fine enough example. Once we have all gone, I can go again.

Quote:

After another well-deserved rest, Lufianth was eager to try her wings out once more. The little green was much more tired than she realized. She made a mighty effort, but once she'd finally made it up and into the air... well, she was almost too tired to keep going!

Scratch that. She was too tired to keep going.

Quote:
Nope, this was a bad idea, and you skid gracelessly along the ground into a heap. Shards.

Though she hit the ground again, her disappointment wasn't nearly as severe as it had been the first time. i]I'm sorry, D'hkamine. She apologized, wearily stretching her neck out to him.

"Don't be sorry." He scolded gently, full of sympathy for his poor, tired darling. This was a pretty normal attempt, he thought... He'd be sure to talk to Z'von, but he couldn't be more proud of Lufianth. "You did really well. If you push yourself too hard, you could hurt yourself." As it was, he'd be checking her over extremely carefully to make sure she hadn't pulled any muscles, cracked any talons, bruised herself too hard... the works.
