I used to live with my Great-Grandma, and I LOVED the Harry Potter books. But whenever she'd catch me reading them she said I was SINNING eek

Her religion is Christian, and I have no hard feelings against anyone who IS in any particular religion. But why is it that to quite a few beleivers beleive that Wizards and such are SATANIC? It is truely a Great peice of Literature and I do reffer everyone to it. (( Go read... NOW! xd )) But I just don't like the fact people are literally "Judgeing a book by its cover" . What are your guys' opinion?

Because some christians (such as your great-grandma) associate anything that isn't praising god's feet as a sin and "the devil" When in reality, not even satanism is about the devil. Like I say, religion only leads to ignorance, prejudice, and stupidity, because it encourages them to not question anything and to "follow the leader" Next time your great-grandma says anything about it, throw the book at her and tell her to actually read it before she says anything again. If she doesn't read it, she's only proving a point that many people have already relized. Anyone who actually reads or watchs the books/movies would relize that the books promote honorable behavior, unlike how your great-grandma is only teaching prejudice and ignorance.

True...I see it as a book...Not as a manual to do "magic"

Is it stoopid in here...

Yeah, well next time you see your grandmother while reading Harry Potter, tell her to go get a life instead of worrying about other people's beliefs and problems. It's a free country! We can sin however we want to!

...or is it just me?

I'm a Christian, and so is my family. They don't mind if I read Harry Potter. My parents know that I know it's fantasy, but cool fantasy.

I too, am a Christian, but just as I told everyone else who's questioned me, if you don't beleive it, it cannot have any effect on you.

I remember one of my insomnia television flip-through nights and started watching a show that had these zealots saying Harry Potter was bad because witchcraft is bad... and I laughed, half-asleep though.

Harry Potter is fiction! It's not bad, it entertains children and if they are reading - who cares? They're opening their minds and using their imaginations, something that usually dies in us when we get older.
I used to read Harry Potter but stopped - but I still thought they were great books!
I'm Christian and in my school they wanted us to read! But there are just those crazed believers who want to boycott a book about children/teenagers sticking up for what they believe in and demolishing evil... @_@;;

Christians and such don't like it because they think it puts "un-Godly" thoughts in to people's heads. But I don't think that's fair. J. K. Rowling said herself she's never heard a kid go "I love your books, I want to be a witch.wizard now!" And what's wrong with being a witch? If there really is magic then the ones who practice it shouldn't be talked down upon by people of other beliefs for it.

harry fotter is just like the chronicles of narnia or lord of the rigns but people don't say you're sinning when you're reading those, but the thing that really annoys some christians are RPG's like D&D, they are supposedly occultic rolleyes

Christians don't mind Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings because they were both written by Christians. Which I think is odd, what does the religion of the author matter?
I remember when I was younger my mom never let me play D&D crying I hated her for it [[in fact that was the first time I didn't want to be Christian]]

Most of the American Protestants get their undies in a bundle over all kinds of stupid s**t, I've noticed.

Most of the European Christians like Catholics/Orthodox Christians don't really care. I've seen them actually go and read the books and put up reviews about them. They're not bad reviews though where they're telling you it's from the devil or something. Just like a real review someone will give a book. xP

I'm a non-denominational Christian and I could really care less what people choose to read.

Harry Potter is a work of fiction. None of it is real, nor is it meant to make children go out and study how to become witches or whatever.

It'd be nice if the American Protestants would realize this and quit making such a hub-bub over such stupid stuff. They should be worrying about more important things, imo, like people that are out doing REAL crimes, like raping/killing/stealing etc.

Reading a book is not a sin last I checked. I don't think God really cares, He's not an idiot like many make Him seem.
------------
Sometimes I wonder if the Protestants just can't let go of the Puritan ideals... (you know, "let's burn the witches!" "kill the sinners!" "We must purify this world of sin!")

@ marsh

You say religion leads to ignorance, prejudice and stupidity. I say that you are ignorant, prejudice and stupid. Just because some people are like that, doesn't mean most are. So shut your anti-religion yap until you have something factual to say about religion. (I don't have a problem against people who don't beleive in a religion, I have a problem with people who disrespect religion, say unfactual things about religion and religious people, and who say rude things about people who are religious. Unless the religious person is being rude first....then be rude back as long as it doesn't have to do with the religion)

Harry Potter is my favorite book, and I'm big time christian. The next time she says something like that, just tell her that it's only a fictional book and that it has nothing to do with sinning. If she keeps with it, just ask her to stop it because you don't appreciate it. And if she still keeps with it, tell your parents to talk with her or something.
