Honestly. I've always hated hackers, always. But since I've never been hacked, I could never really say I'd had the first hand experience.
Recently, I've seen some posts in the CB where users state that they think hackers are SMART. Oh yes, so smart because they can hack into people's accounts. They've smart because they can steal? They're smart because they have enough brains to use a simple password rip site?! ARGH! Anyone could do that! It is so angering to see users saying that. Hackers are idiots who can't work to get the items on their own.
So, now, I have sadly had a first time experience with a hacker and I think it really shows just how STUPID they are. No, my account was not hacked... The MULE of my joint art shop was. It may be annoying to us, but that hacker got absolutely nothing! No gold is traded through that account, all the gold goes straight to the individual artists. They took all the items- all of the cheap beginner items and lame quest items we used to make it not naked. So, what, they got like, 600 gold worth of items and 200 gold?
They didn't even mess up the posts in our thread-! They were even stupid enough to give one of our artist's a password so she could rush back in and copy our post set-ups, get lists of all of the PMs we had received from potential customers, etc before the password was changed again.
So now, we're in the process of getting the mule banned so it can't cause us problems. We're setting up a new store, which isn't too bad, since it was still fairly new. Our customers are still with us, so there was no damage. How stupid can a hacker get? To risk getting caught all for the sake of maybe 800 gold?
My point is that some new users are beginning to see hackers and scammers as smart users. They see it as the only way to get what they want on Gaia. Which, frankly, scares me. What do you all think?

Well, sad to say, it is the most prominent way to get several items. I've noticed the number of hackers have dramatically increased since the 2% deduction started in the marketplace. Prices have spiked exponentially, things that used to cost 500k a year ago now being well over 3 mil. Some people see it necessary to hack people in order to be able to afford these things.

hackers don't use rip sites. Those would be scammers.
A true hacker breaks through the mainframe or database or what have you, will sit there for several hours until they crack the algorithm. The only reason I know this is because I've worked on computers since I was 4 years old.
And it could happen to anyone. As long as you have a fairly secure password, you're safe.

I know a few hackers and they arent stupid. They are experienced. Newbie hackers are the ones who are dumb enough to get caught or go for crappy art stores. My friend jason hacked a school computer and changed a lunch menu. A newbie would be dumb enough to try and change a grade.
Experience is what determines if a hacker is smart or dumb.
Oh and indulge making this thread and being an a$$ was stupid and childish. Think before you discriminate.

Do not insult or harass other members, just because someone might be dumb in your opinion, ask a question you don't think should be asked doesn't give you the right to torment them. Be helpful and point them where they need to be instead.
Consider that your warning. Your last sentence was highly unnecessary. I actually agree with Indu on the basis of that they only use their experience to rob from others.
Also, a 'newbie' as you call them, aren't dumb enough and would just change their grades. I did that my entire 8th grade year and didn't get caught. Newbie hackers are the ones who leave traces of their wrongdoing.

^^" Wow, I am reminded why I don't like to make threads. I'm sorry if it sounded childish, but it was something that really did hurt me and my fellow artists who had high hopes in our new shop. Our so-called "crappy" art store may not matter to you, but it certainly mattered to us.
It really is sad about the inflation, I hate it as much as the next person, but its only made worse when people are hacked. Dx I'm sure hackers are "smart", but I can't say that they aren't stupid in the fact that what they are doing doesn't really benefit them or the site.
In general, I do know there are not "stupid as in just plain cruel" hackers outside of Gaia, even though this thread was supposed to mostly be about hackers on Gaia. My dad works for a state college, "hacking" their system to tell them how to improve security. But there is difference between doing it for the benefit of others and just robbing others of their hard work.

Love me, Dread me...
It's stupid what hackers do but to hack into a database is actually quite difficult. But not Smart.
...Eternal Dread me.
