I like his stuff, its so imaginative. Like in the begining "The introduction of the Royal Lion" You can actually hear where he put the lion roaring with the piano. Saint-Seans has an awesome imagination.

The Carnival of the Animals was originally only for his students to practice. It wasnt meant for the public. But it became probably his most popular work. He wrote a lot of study books for children too. He was an AMAZING pianist.

It's ironic he absolutely HATED the fact that this piece got to be so popular, he didn't want to be known by this piece at all, but it's probably instantly identified with him if you say his name.

It's a very fun piece to listen to, comical and great imagery. I think each section captures its picture perfectly in my opinion. I will agree with the composer that it's not his best work, but that doesn't stop it from making it a great piece of music and always enjoyable to listen to biggrin

I'd have to say my favorite piece by him though is his Danse Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah. The oboe solos are awesome. We played it last season in the Orchestra. My oboe teacher got the solos though. But I would sit there and marvel at them because I loved them so much. whee It was an extremely fun piece to play on the oboe.

Gustav Holst dispised that The Planets were insanly popular. they took too much attention away from his other works as well. thats the reason he didnt write a score for pluto D:

I've never actually hear the Carnival of the Animals but intend to soon. I really enjoy listening to Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rhondo Capriccioso.

I love that piece! The orchestra I'm in played it this last year, and it was so much fun!

The oboe cadenza at the begining is awesome isnt it. When you hear different recordings you can always tell how well the oboist can hold thier breath by how fast its played. xd Its supposed to be done in one breath.

The Carnival of the Animals is lovely, but it's not my favourite of his. My personal favourite is the third Symphony. It's actually one of the few Symphonies I like...

Well, I believe that it was published posthumously. The only piece of the suite published in Saint-Saens' life time was The Swan. The reason for this was apparently he thought it too frivolous.
