This particular thread revolves around Jounouchi Katsuya/Joey Wheeler, the best friend of our two main characters.

I will post my opinions first in a form format, so you can either choose to copy and use the format, or make up your own.
Basic Opinion/What You Answered in the Poll: I absolutely love and adore Jounouchi. Why You Hold That Opinion: [SPOILER WARNING] Jounouchi Katsuya is a very special character to me. He has been my all-time favorite character, from any franchise, ever, since I was in junior high, which I've always found somewhat strange, since I have a tendency to prefer more mature/serious characters, plus I've never been fond of blond hair or brown eyes. He was also the character that I first started reading/writing fanfiction of and pairing up in yaoi pairings. There's always just been something about Jounouchi that attracts me to him as a character (though I do not have an anime crush on him; that's just... no), and I've always had to do a lot of thinking on why that was so. Jounouchi is the underdog of the series. There's no denying that. He's the character who always has to work to be up to par with the main characters and their opponents. Because of this, I feel like Jounouchi is a more believable character. He has far more flaws than most of the good characters, but he's constantly struggling to improve them. What makes him even more believable is that, like so many real people, he acknowledges and tries to improve on some flaws, but others he's completely oblivious to (or chooses to ignore). I suppose that even though Jounouchi was just as involved in the plot as the other main characters, he seemed to grow far more on his own. While Yuugi and Yami no Yuugi grew through and for the main plot, Jounouchi was constantly deciding to improve on his own. He stopped getting into fights once he became friends with Yuugi, he worked hard to prove his worth in Duelist Kingdom, he did all he could to show his love for his sister, even though he hardly got to see her at all, he vowed to win his Red Eyes back from Yami no Yuugi by becoming a true duelist... the list just goes on. It always felt like to me, Jounouchi would constantly be having his own little side plot going on (except in the Memory Arc), but he would never have his own problems distract from the main plot. On the contrary, his own development as a character enhanced the main plot, giving the two Yuugis support and advice through what he had learned about himself already. I feel this made Jounouchi a very interesting character, because while the two Yuugis and the main villains were mostly affected and changed by the main plot, Jounouchi was always changing through his own will, while the other side characters really didn't have much development at all, sadly. Every once in a while they would have a plot that revolved around them and allowed them to grow, but it was never an on-going thing like it was for Jounouchi. Aside from the development the guy had in the series that made him more interesting and human to me, I also just love Jounouchi's personality. He never acts just one way (like how Kaiba is always arrogant, or how Shizuka is always sweet), but changes his actions based on his feelings, and is not afraid to wear his emotions on his sleeve. Jounouchi can be happy-go-lucky one second, but once he's insulted, he's completely pissed off, and will let everyone know. Once the insults are over, he could suddenly be happy again, or perhaps low on self esteem, or maybe arrogant. His moods are constantly changing and flowing, and yet each reaction and emotion he shows suits his character. That's something that also makes Jounouchi a very fun character to roleplay or write fanfictions of; you're never stuck in one phase. You get to play the happiest guy in the world, the most depressed guy, the most angry guy, the funniest and goofiest guy, the most arrogant guy, the guy with the lowest self esteem, and the guy who knows how to get people to try harder, including himself. He has so many personalities to him, and I just love them all. Jounouchi is no where near perfect, and that is exactly why I love him so much. Favorite Characters to Pair With: Kaiba Seto, Malik Ishtar, Rishid Ishtar, Mutou Yuugi, Yami no Yuugi, Honda Hiroto, Otogi Ryuuji, Bakura Ryou, Yami no Bakura, Kajiki Ryouta, Mazaki Anzu, Kujaku Mai, Pegasus J. Crawford, Kaiba Mokuba... I guess all the different emotions he shows so easily make him easy to pair with so many people. Gosh I make the poor guy such a slut... XD;; Rating of Favoriteness: Definite most favorite character from anything anywhere.

My heart is closed up and I feel it crumbling down...
I voted that I like Jounouchi. (I actually like him very much, but I don't exactly love him. xD)
He's just a great character. He had a lot of character development through out the series which made him a very believeable character. Especially because his development wasn't forced on him by the plot. He's one of the only few characters who saw many of his flaws and purposely did something about them. Also, he's a hard worker. Jounouchi wasn't able to just snap his fingers and become a great duelist (Like, for example, Yuugi seemed to be able to do.) nor was he able to just buy the strongest cards for himself (Like Seto.). He had to work his a** off for every victory which makes him a character worth respecting. On top of that, he's a loyal and supportive friend. Though he had his own problems to worry about, he continued to stand by Yuugi's side. He also has the most interesting personality. He's not afraid to show his emotions and he can change them quite quickly. One minute, he'll be on an angry tangent, the next moment, he might be laughing or acting totally ridiculous. I could write quite a bit more about Jounouchi, but I think this'll do. xD
I like pairing him with Mutou Yuugi, Yami no Yuugi, and Honda Hiroto. XD
He's probably in my top five favorite characters, but it's really difficult to place him. xD;;

Wow, we seem to almost completely agree on the reasons we like Jounouchi. XD I just take it a bit further to the love category. I think it would be a dream come true if I had Jounouchi for an older brother and Shizuka for a little sister, but that would also be quite weird.

Yeah, I didn't read your post until after I finished mine and I was like, "O-O Whoa! We said almost exactly the same thing!"
Yeah, I know, right. xD Jounouchi is a great older brother... I wish my older brothers were like him. XDD

I know, I was like, "...is she just summarizing my post...? Or did she not read it yet, because that's kind of weird if she didn't. XD" I'm actually quite fond of my brother, but I wish my sister was more like Shizuka.

xD Yeah. That's so weird...
Yeah... I have two older brothers. My oldest brother is the one that I wish would be more Jounouchi-like. ^-^;; (Though now that I read my post, I see that I accidentally put "brothers" instead of "brother". =P) He's really... Well, let's just say that he's not a very good brother. ._.;;

It seems like almost everyone has a not-so-good sibling. I flat-out despise my only full-blooded sibling, the one I wish was more like Shizuka. I love my half-brother and one of my half-sisters, then the other two half-sisters, I enjoy their company, but don't feel like I know them enough to really be close to them.

Basic Opinion/What You Answered in the Poll: I put that I had neutral feelings about him.
Oh, wow, you guys like him, don't you. That's good... it's nice yo know the underdog has some fans wink
Personally, I don't like him as much as you guys do, but I don't dislike him at all... that's why I put neutral down, even though I like him a little more then neutral. I think that we can all agree that he's the underdog, and that he's had to work for everything himself, instead of having the plot just handing it to him (so to speak). That's the reason why I like him basically - what you all just said. The reason why I don't like him as much, is, I guess, more an opinion than any specific thing he's done. I find his personality a bit annoying, even though I act like that sometimes, too... I just... I don't know. Like I said, more of a personal opinion then anything he's said or done. Maybe his personality's more of an aquirred taste? rofl Anyways, I'm not sure what else there is to say that you all haven't said... I pretty much said what you noth said, anyway...
Favorite Characters to Pair With: Mutou Yuugi, Kaiba Seto
Rating of Favoriteness: he's not in my top five... maybe my sixth or seventh fave?

Haha, Jounouchi's personality is definitely a bit... on the strong side. XD I can easily see how it's an acquired taste. He annoys me at times too, but not enough to detract from my love of him. I think the time he got on my nerves the absolute most was when he lied to Mai about her being in his dream. That was just... a horrible thing to say to someone who was just beginning to feel comfortable having real friends.

Well, that's part of what these threads are for, seeing if we can learn more about the characters, and why we feel what we feel for them. :3

That was just... a horrible thing to say to someone who was just beginning to feel comfortable having real friends. That scene made me fall in love with Mai. But I'll go into it deeper when there's a Mai thread, becuse it's not really relevant here.
Though, I can see his thinking in that bit. I've done the "Oh crap, they're gonna think I'm some sort of stalker, LIE MODE LIE MODE" thing too. It's a terrible thing to do to people, but sometimes you just panic and the stupid part of your brain takes over. Not saying it was the right thing to do, but I can understand it, I guess. At least he tries to put it right in any case, which I why I don't hate him for it. He's more someone who did something stupid there than someone who is just fundamentally nasty.
Here I don't hate him for it, I may do on the Mai thread.
On a wider scale, I pretty much just agree with what you guys already wrote, so I can't be asked to type it all up. It'd be the same thing for the nth time. =P

Mai is awesome. <3 Now I'm eager to get to her thread. XD;; Yes, I totally agree, that it wasn't something he did intending to be a jerk, but just a panicked reaction that was really stupid. Though he pissed me off more than he ever has then than in any other situation, I was still only mildly peeved. That might be another reason I love him so much, because the worse thing he ever did really wasn't too horrible at all. XD;; And as you said, I could never hold that mistake against him either, especially since he tried to make up for it in the end. If anything, I think he let that mistake teach him that it's okay to express feelings you might be embarrassed of, because after that he was waaay more loving towards Mai, in a friendshippy way at least.

Yes. And when you take his background into account, it makes sense for him to be reserved about who he lets into his "Yes, I need and want your friendship" circle. My guess is that because he couldn't really rely on either parent, relying on other people is something of an alien concept to begin with. When he first becomes friends with Yugi, he seems mystified that Yugi sticks up for him (understandable, given the nature of their interactions before this) but also rewards it with immense loyalty, which suggests that he's very grateful for it. For that to happen, it's probably a rarity. And, admitting to someone that you rely on their friendship does make you vulnerable, so it makes sense that he doesn't quite feel ready and freaks out.
It's probably interesting that he then immediately puts the onus on himself to fix what happens to Mai given that, but I'm not going to explore it properly because I have to go and hoover now.
I dunno if that makes any sense at all, but thinking about it made me like him more and I didn't dislike him to begin with, so good did come out of it. =P
